The National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS) on Thursday declared that the Ghanaian Government would regret sacking its members from Ghana markets.

The President of the association, Mr Ken Ukoha, stated this in Abuja in an interview with newsmen.

Ukoha said Ghana would “cry had I known’’ in the long run for its hostilities towards Nigerian traders in Ghana.

He recalled that the Ghanaian Trade Ministry had last week directed non-natives to vacate all markets in the country or face the wrath of the law.

He said that the Ghana Union of Traders Associations (GUTA) had persistently mounted pressure on the authorities to eject non-Ghanaians from markets.

Ukoha said that the authority, in its directive, gave a 30-day ultimatum to all non-Ghanaians in retail trading to vacate all the markets in the country.

He added that the Ghanaian Trade Ministry had earlier raised the minimum capital for foreigners to do business in the country from 300,000 U.S. dollars to 1 million U.S. dollars in cash or goods.

He said all the measures were targeted at Nigerian traders in Ghana.

Ukoha, however, said that though the development would create economic turbulence for the Nigerian traders, the impact would only be felt for a short time.

He stated that “the business activities of Nigerian traders benefits Ghanaians too’’ in spite of whatever the Ghanaians claim.

The president said that the repatriation of Nigerian petty traders from Ghana would have more negative economic impact on Ghana itself than it would on Nigeria.

The Ghanaian economy will feel it because the exit of Nigerians from that economy will affect their revenue generation.

The reason being that most of the taxes collected are Nigerian bound revenue.

What mini business operators are doing in Ghana is to redistribute wealth in Ghana; with their expatriation, their funds will be redirected to Nigeria.

I know that Ghana will `cry had I known’ in the long run.

“There are more than two million Nigerian traders in Ghana and if they are repatriated we will welcome them home,’’ he said.

According to him, the affected Nigerian traders were small entrepreneurs that would not find it too difficult to relocate to either Nigeria or any other West African country to continue their business.

He said that the implication of the Ghanaian decision would be more on ECOWAS as a whole because it would threaten the regional integration process.

“Ghana needs to consider the implication of their decision on the future of ECOWAS as an entity and how the regional integration process will be affected,’’ he said.

You think your govt acted wisely.

So you guys like Nigerian students schooling in your country but hate Nigerian traders

Why not apply the law to schooling so as to evict Nigerian students too

At least Ghana schools should be meant for Ghanaians.

Time will tell if you guys acted foolishly.

Lagos Traders battle Chinese over market invasion
The Embroidery Dealers Association and the
association of Nigerian Marketers of the Balogun
market and Ereko Idumota area of Lagos Island
have staged a protest to the office of Iyaloja of
the market, Alhaja Habitat Mogaji, over the
alleged invasion of their markets by some
Chinese, who they claimed have almost taken
over their business.
The aggrieved traders also stormed Alausa, in no
fewer than 10 BRT Buses loaded with their
members to express their anger to Lagos State
government.
The protest, Inside Lagos discovered, took place
following an allegation that the Chinese importers
had allegedly brought disrepute to the smooth
running of their business by flooding the market
with inferior quality textile and hair products
being sold at ridiculously cheap prices.

Speaking with one of the lace fabric dealers,
Alhaja Muheebat Adeoye, she claimed that the
Chinese were not only allegedly robbing the
traders but also the consumers, explaining that
“these Chinese have Nigerians fronting for them
in our markets and they mix high ones products
with the inferior quality even as they sell at very
cheap rates. The buyers cannot differentiate
because the imitation is so perfect that one will
hardly know the fake and they are killing our
business because we don’t sell anymore”.
She declared that the market was closed in order
to express their objection to the Chinese dealers
in the market as they were not satisfied with the
way the Chinese were continually ruining their
business.
She went further to inform that it was usually
difficult to get the original imported lace sold
because the Chinese had allegedly produced an
imitation, the same pattern of materials and sold
at very low rate.
According to her, “we cannot get the imported
lace again in Lagos market, the so called
Chinese have destroyed the market for instance
they sold the material of fifteen thousand at
three thousand naira”.
Lamenting also, a leather box trader, Mr. Adeolu
Owolabi, noted that “as the situation is presently,
some traders who are the beneficiaries of the
Chinese products are not happy with the protest,
while others whose businesses are affected are
satisfied with the situation. Honestly, these
Chinese are killing our business and we want the
government to do something about this because
this cannot obtain in their own country. How can
they rob us of our rights” he queried.

First off, there was a law prohibiting foreigners (including Nigerians) from venturing into markets solely preserved for Ghanaians(just like how only Dangote gets to make cement in Nigeria). Everybody knows that you respect the laws of your host nation.

Secondly, there is no law restricting foreigners (including Nigerians) from attending Ghanaians educational institutions.

If it's the law of Ghana, Nigeria traders must respect it, or find a way to get it abolished. Either that or they pack their bags and luggage and leave. No need moaning or crying.

But that said, the business attitude of some Ghanaian retailers and artisans that I have personally encountered leaves much to be desired. Some of them will not sell to you if you come too early (before they finish arranging their stuff) to or quite late (when they are closing their shop). And some of their artisans will not do your work if they have funerals of their friend's grandfather to attend. Such attitude creates opportunity for more aggressive competitors usually foreigners!

Why the noise by Nigeria? Every country creates an environment where its citizens benefit more. Didn't Gowon introduce the indigenization decree in the 1970's? Have we forgotten "Ghana must go"? The action of Ghana should tell Ken Ukoha, and Ndigbo in general, just as we do tell them here, if Ndigbo get Biafra today, all of them outside the South East trading will be forced back to the Souh East.
