CONTEXT CONTEXT CONTEXT ! --
If Muhammad could come to life, he would be really sad to see how his Muslim world today is so confused about his Qu'ranic verses. Some Muslim say Islam is religion of peace, while others are slaying infidels and blowing people in jihad.

Muhammad left very clear instructions in the Qu'ran, yet most Muslims today fail to understand Islams' agenda, worse some Muslims even entirely alter the meaning of Qu'ran & say "Islam loves infidels & humanity" just to make Islam & the concept of Jihad sound sweet to infidels.
The below mentioned verse is not just taken from a book, its taken from a book that claims to be a source of divine inspiration sent by Allah through his last messenger Muhammad, to be followed by all Muslims until the last day. Understand this, or please consult a learned Muslim. Qu'ran is not a book of historical episodes of Muhammads' life, therefore the argument that these violent passages of Islam were only valid during the certain time of certain episode of Muhammads' life is invalid. Qu'ran is supposedly the book of revelation sent by "Allah" that contains passages that Muslims are supposed to follow for all times (until the whole world comes under Islam).
Muhammad is clear & to the point by telling the believers to fight the un-believers ( who are living in jahaliya & therefore committing fitna ) UNTIL RELIGION SHOULD ONLY BE FOR ALLAH. This below mentioned verse supersedes any need of any historical context.
Quran (8:39) - "And fight with them until there is no more fitna (infidel-hood) and religion should be only for Allah"
- Muhammad is not only clear here, but he is also serious about it. He wants Muslims to attack until Islam is the only religion in this world and therefore the whole world bows down to accept Muhammad as the only prophet. This itself reeks of Muhammads' under-tone of self-inflated ego and divine mission to impose his narcissm on the rest of the world.
Here's another verse that BYPASSES any discussion of a supposed historical context :
Quran (8:12) - "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who DISBELIEVE IN ISLAM & PROPHET. Therefore strike off their [infidels'] heads and strike off every fingertip of them"
Quran (9:29) - "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth (Islam), until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued."
"believe in me or be killed". That's the clear message here just from the above two verses. There is no presumption of a context or a defensive war here. The fact that infidels are infidels is the Primary reason for killing them.
The verses are are to the point & very clearly define the goals of Islam, after all thats' supposedly a divine revelation of Allah to be followed by mankind for all times to come, it better be clear.
Allah & Muhammad made the mission of Islam so clearly known, yet Muslims today are trying to sugar-coat & justify the verses to suit the demands of their times. Interestingly, the narrative that "Islam is a religion of peace" by Islamic apologists is a very recent phenomenon, ever since the rise of Infidel-civilizations/countries around the world. In the Medieval ages when Islam had been at its peak, Muslim chroniclers were very honest & proud of their concept of Jihad & infidel slaughter and the Muslim theologists/scholars very gleefully & proudly record in their literary works how & when such & so Islamic ghazi / caliph put to the death varying thousands of Infidels in whichever country Islam lay its hands on.
The Muslims of Muhammads' time ---- > the latter caliphs ---- > the ghazis' of Islam ---- > the conquerors & successful Islamic generals ------ > and the modern day Jihadis such as Osama bin laden & suicide bombers, all understood the message of Islam & instructions of Muhammad very clear. They never had any doubts in Islams' infidel-slaughtering agenda. Islam is the best religion in the world, all the kuffars should be made to utter "la ila illalha....mohammdur rasool allah" either by jaziya or the sword by chopping of their heads & fingers... and that's what is happening since the last 1400 years.
any justification given to save the "religious-status" of Islam & promote a "peaceful sounding version" of Islam is not only factually wrong, but is very shameful because it dis-respects the souls of the millions of kuffars who died for the last 1400 years because they did not believe that a man who promises 72 virgins in heaven can be a prophet sent by God & supposedly the "perfect creation of God".
