He was brought to the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the 1994 African Nations Cup as a cover for Peter Rufai. Agu retired at the age of 30, after having spent most of his career in Africa. He has served as the goalkeeping coach for Enyimba and in April 2008 was named goalkeeper coach for the national team.

Christian Chukwu - Defender

Christian Chukwu led the Nigerian team to the 1980 African Cup of Nations which they won on home soil and he was the best player of the tournament. He played in three consecutive African Cup of Nations from 1976 to 1980. He is probably the best Nigerian defender ever. He was also the captain of the famous Nigerian club (Enugu Rangers) during his playing days.

Ohen-hen was synonymous with free-kicks. Our Saudi 89 hero. The initiator of the miracle of Damam.

He never broke into the national team because of the cluster of stars we had then. He was our best free-kick taker until Okocha improved on his in early 2000s.

A product of that highly talented 1989 Golden Eaglets team that also had Benedict Akuegbe, Godwin Okpara, and John Zaki. The other players never really made any impacts afterwards. A good number furthered their studies.

Take note: The 1989 FIFA U17 WC was held in Scotland (Scotland '89) and not Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia hosted the U21 WC.

FATAI ATERE

In 1985, Nigeria won the first ever FIFA U16 World Cup and there was a certain Fatai Atere on that team who was 14 years old. Two years later, at 16, Fatai Atere played in same World Cup and in three years he had faded out of the game. Atere was just 19 when he quit active football. The Old Matori road was renamed Fatai Atere way in Nov. 1985

FATAI ATERE AND DEMEJI LAWAL

Fatai Atere was not really outstanding.

The outstanding player in that pic was Dimeji Lawal. Formerly Oladimeji Mohammed(at U17).
Dimeji was such an awesome player to watch. He played football, pulled stunts and enjoyed it. And he played with so much confidence.

Dimeji, Osondu and Christopher Nwosu were totally unplayable at the 1987 U17.

Why Dimeji Lawal's career failed to progress is still a mystery to me today. That boy was pure class.

I think John Zaki won the CAF Champions League in the late 90s as a key player for Asec Mimosa. His style then was so similar to Daniel Amokachi.

Yeah. He won a continental title with ASEC. Think it was either the cup winners Cup or the CAF Cup. There was no CAF champions league then.

Isaac Success also plays like him.

O boy who doesn't like good old memories.

Our youth teams of the 80s were highly talented.

Due to the competition in the national team in the 90s a lot of them couldnt play for Nigeria at the senior level.

Imagine players like Tarila Okoronwanta, Dimeji Lawal, Chris Ohenhen, not being able to break into the team even with their exploits both at youths and club level.

Even the likes of Siasia, Adepoju, Ugbade that managed to break in mostly were not starters.
Alloy Agu and Agbonavbare were also goalkeepers products of that era.

A player like Ohenhen was with the Real Madrid youth team at a stage.

In 1997 the CAF Champions League replaced the previous pan-African competition, the African Cup of Champions Clubs; this had run from 1964–1996 From wiki

ASEC Mimosa won the title in 1998 with John Zaki a key player. It was the CAF Champions League.

So John Zaki was still at ASEC as at 1998?

I did not watch the young Nigerian players in the early eighties and Nineties. I knew John Zaki in 1998 playing for Asec Mimosa. It was the same period I knew Baldwin Bazuaye. It is from you I knew they played as young eaglets.
