The governor suggested that we visit the place. Not being a man of protocol, we visited the Umuofor community in Oguta LGA, accompanied by Hon. Chuka Nwauwa, ex-HOR member, who used to represent the area. ...The visit was an eye opener. HRH Abdulfatah Emetumah, whose father, also the traditional ruler was converted to Islam, presides over a very peaceful and progressive community where the issue of religious differences is said to have never been an issue.
We were welcomed by the members of his cabinet that is made up of Christian and Muslim chiefs and by other members of the community that is preponderantly Christian. Many Muslim youth corpers posted to the community were also at hand to welcome our party. Wamakko spoke about how Sokoto State under him is an epitome of peace and harmony as they do not recognize any differences on basis of religion or ethnicity in Sokoto. He pointed out that Sokoto State is the most peaceful corner of the country where sectarian differences are unheard of, pointing out that he has two Igbo members in his cabinet – one from Imo and another from Anambra.
An Islamic university under construction in the community has been starved of funds and shows signs of dilapidation. The big mosque, built and commissioned in 1981 by the late Ado Bayero, the Emir of Kano, is also unkempt with leaking roof. Governor Wamakko and members of our entourage prayed with Eze Emetumah and his Muslim members in the mosque. Wamakko promised to attract funding to rehabilitate the mosque, build-up and equip the university. The community complained about the lack of a medical facility and Wamakko sent their appeal to Governor Rochas Okorocha once we returned to Owerri and he promised to take prompt action.
Incidentally, Muslim religion has gained recognition in Oguta area of Imo State where Muslims have interacted and lived harmoniously with their Christian neighbours for years. In fact, the Third Republic had a Muslim senator from Oguta LGA, representing Orlu senatorial zone. His name was Alhaji Maduagwu.[/b]
