Fashola Switches On 11.8 Klm Public Lighting On Ikorodu Rd, Road, MM Way. PICS. by arresa: 11:50am On Oct 28, 2014

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN, Monday evening switched on an 11.8 kilometre stretch of public lighting covering from Ikorodu Road to Iddo via Jibowu and Murtala Mohammed Way, Yaba even as he appealed to residents to take ownership of the asset.

The project, which consists of 11.8 kilometres of public lighting, is broken into two sections with one section consisting of 1.2 kilometres from Ikorodu Road to Jibowu while the second consists of 10.6 kilometres on Murtala Mohammed Way (from Jibowu to Iddo). It brings to a total of 410 kilometres of roads so far lit up in the City by the Government in the last three years.

In his remarks shortly after performing the ceremony, Governor
Fashola also appealed to motorists who ply the roads to obey the
State’s Traffic laws especially by not driving against traffic
saying by driving against traffic they not only endanger their
lives but those of other road users.

The Governor, who said the switching on ceremony marked the end of
the construction work in the area, added, however, that it also
marks the commencement of maintenance works to make sure that the
road stays in good state of repair.

He appealed particularly to communities around the project area
including churches, schools, Railway Compound as well as others
who pass through the roads to treat the infrastructure as a public
asset adding, “It belongs to you”.

“The lighting, I believe, will help this place on a daily basis.
At nights, it will make security better, it will also improve the
night economy in this community”, the Governor said.

Aside providing jobs for a total of 89 people made up of 56
technicians, 12 painters, 10 welders, eight engineers and three
supervisors, the project has increased the amount of functioning
public lighting within the State to 410 kilometres while it
signifies Government’s continued commitment to light up the City
‘Pole to Pole’.

Other major highways that have benefited from the Public Lighting
project in the last three years include Gbagada Expressway, Carter
Bridge, Iju Road, Ahmadu Bello Way, Marina Road (Badagry) and
Alhaji Masha ( Surulere), among others.

Earlier, in her welcome address, the General Manager of Lagos
State Electricity Board, Mrs. Damilola Ogunbiyi, thanked Governor
Fashola and the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure as well as
the State’s Electricity Board for their roles in bringing the
project to a successful conclusion adding that the lighting has
connected Ikorodu Road all the way to Iddo.

Excellent one from Fashola however i have a question.
The report said the first section is from ikorodu road to jibowu. Where in ikorodu road? Did it start from mile 12 or ketu or ojota or palmgrove etc. Where did it start from.

Why should a ceremony be organised just to switch on street lights? Even the poorest states and the so called worse performing governors do this all the time witthout making any noise or throwing a party.
This is propaganda at its worse.

The Lagos state government can not sell electricity to residential addresses so face your federal government with that problem...

The idea here is to light up all our streets, bridges, schools, colleges, public institutions, courts, hospitals, government offices 24/7.

Same thought here. I don't think they're referring to mile 12-Ikorodu express. Because construction is still on there, and I don't think it has reached the level of lightening.

Go and check the meaning of '''ceremony'''
You don't have to see canopies and people dressed in Ase-oke for it to be a ceremony. Cutting ribbons and switching on the lights in front of cameras is a ceremony and a very unnecessary one.
State governors install street lights all the time without making news out of it, how much more Lagos which is supposed to be a mega city (according to them)?
Fashola's government is a government of propaganda.

If APC does not deem it fit to present this guy as a presidential aspirant, then you guys have nothing to offer. If it is not FASHOLA for President, APC will be roundly defeated next year in the presidential poll.

The only interesting thing here is that the lights are not connected to the epileptic supply from the National grid. They are powered from the Lagos Island IPP which exclusively generates power to power hospitals, courthouses, the state house, some police stations, few school, street lighting etc.

From the write up, a measure of 1.2 km from Jibowu along Ikorodu section is covered.
Not the entire ikorodu road.
However, most section of ikorodu road is already covered. I will still pass the route today.

That should actually start from the Independence tunnel in Maryland to Jibowu ( just before the Darmalong bridge) because that is where the first phase terminates

The light have been on testing since the beginning of this month, you should see how beautiful that road looks at night. Residents can now comfortable sit outside their houses at night when there's no light and enjoy fresh breeze without fear of being robbed. People can now exercise in the evenings (on the BRT lane which is only used in the morning) through jogging, cycling or skating.

However, the governor should stand by his words of carrying out maintenance as some parts of the road are cracking already, the outlet for water has been blocked with sand and some parts of the drainage have been opened by those that were laying pipes and they left it open, a portion beside AP club, a colleague of mine fell into it some months ago and was bedridden for almost two months

Lagos state came up with a creative idea to get around the worthless and almost obsolete National grid by laying their own underground cable. When they started with the first IPP, they connected 22 streets, hospitals, courts, carter bridge and the state house in Marina via just 50 klm underground cable.

ANNUAL REDUCTION OF CO2 EMISSIONS: Refer to section 1.3 - Island power expansion project

OPERATIONAL DATE: MAY 2011

The Island Power Project remains the fastest executed (9 months) and one of the most successful Independent Power Projects in Nigeria. The project is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between LASG and Island Power Limited (IPL). The project currently supplies power to General Hospital, Lagos (Including the Mortuary & Doctors quarters), Island Maternity Hospital, Lagos State Health Service Commission, High Court of Lagos State, High Court of Lagos State Annex, Igbosere Magistrate Court, Lagos House Marina, E-learning Centre, Lagos City Hall, Freedom Park and public lighting installations on 22 Streets within Lagos Island. The project also includes an 18-km dedicated underground distribution network which guarantees power delivery to these public infrastructure targets all being powered using Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). The Island Power Project has drastically improved the reliability of power supply to the named facilities from 35% to 99.4%, provided constant street lighting and cost savings for the state.

That was back in 2011-

Now we have-

Akute Power Project
Island Power Project
Island Power Project Expansion (IPP2)
Alausa Power
Peninsular Power Integrated Project
Mainland Power Project

We'll light up the whole of Lagos, it's just a matter of time.

Fashola is basically saying lighting up Nigeria is not rocket science, you just need creative, dedicated, responsible and patriotic leaders with strong sense of duty and obligation to make it happen unlike the crooked and corrupt unpatriotic jackassesss we have in Abuja..

Competent and productive people are their enemies and incompetent, corrupt and non performing losers are their heroes and role models. Progress and development in their backward and ignorant world is Propaganda so you can see why they remain backward with useless and worthless non productive leaders with nothing to show for 16 years in office.

It's their mentality, culture and way of life and this you can not change.
