Hello nairalanders, it's question time again. My dad is looking to purchase a full size luxury sedan. He is set on buying one of the more common regulars. Either a 7 series or a Mercedes S Class.

Since he is an old bloke, he has naturally gravitated to the Mercedes (plus Mercedes are old people's cars aren't they? *snigger*)

I'm thinking more left field for him and I've sent him reviews of the Audi A8, Jaguar XJ8 and VW Phaeton.

What do you reckon will be the best fit for him? I am pretty much sold on the Phaeton. Partly because it's pretty much a Bentley, looks understated, and I'm pretty sure it's better value than the A8.

He doesn't care about 0 - 60 times and Repair / maintenance cost wouldn't really rattle him like it would me.

In your replies, please state what you would recommend for your parent if you were in my shoes and why.

I'm sure Siena will have a lot to say based on his love for VAG and my phaeton > A8 post earlier.

CityNG, Lomomike, Emperoh, Sultaan and all you petrol heads, let's get a discussion going.

For my Dad I would recommend whatever large luxury model Peugeot has these days, he;s a certified Peugeot guy.

For your Dad please let him buy what pleases him. Either 7 or S class is a good buy and will satisfy the most discerning driver. Your task is to help him triage "his" choices.

I'll better let him have the Mercedes S Class irrespective of the model year

- that car has a funny way of saying "dude, we ain't of the same class so nibble off" to other rides around

I have never seen the phaeton anywhere in Lagos. So that is to say that car is very rear or a collectors item.

I will advice between the S class or 7 series though I will respect the Benz more.

The Audi A8 still has an impression on me craftmanship, aggressiveness and pure luxury in superior all aluminum body shell. But buy what ever pleases your Dad that's of utmost importance.

Allow him choose between S class and 7 series since those are his preferred choices, I will take the BMW 7 series over the S class.
But if he decides to go with your choice then the Audi A8 will be my choice for your dad, though the Phaeton is way underrated but the A8 is overly impressive and would leave a lasting impression on you.

Seems you don't understand me, I have seen lamboughini, corvette, camaro, porsche, Rolls Royce etc but I have never seen the VW phateon on Lagos roads. Just saying its a very rear model I think the bugatti is even common than it.

The S class to me is the perfect car for retirement the luxury and comfort is top notch. The car has that aura that when you see it the car says "This lagos wey we dey so is our own"

The best or nothing..

I'd like to shake it up a bit and add an M139 Maserati Quattroporte to the suggestions I pass on to him.

A Ferrari sourced engine, Italian flair and beauty (to me) can't be sniffed at.

Reliability might be a sore spot but low mileage examples can be found for $20,000 - $30,000.

Thoughts?

Well then, that was fast, depreciation that is.

I have this car on my bucket list, thanks for bringing it back up the list. I wasn't aware that the price has fallen this drastically, no wonder I've been seeing them seemingly on every street corner over here.

The exhaust note gives me wood.

if not for the pics CityNG posted showing the prices I would have seriously doubted it. @lungwun the parts for the Vehicles on the list are readily accessible in Nigeria. The Maserati would fun to own but it would be annoyingly to have to order and wait for any bits and pieces you need. Chai so I would be seeing the car and the prices in my dreams.

The cheapest to buy will be the VW Phaeton, low profile because of the brand but still packs enough to be respected.

Merz will be a good option but it will attract unwanted attraction from the wrong individual so I will pass on it.

A8 is relatively unknown as a luxurious brand because of the popularity of the smaller models.

The 7-series will be my pick here if I was not the cheapskate I am, it will get the respect, attention it deserves but not from the wrong individuals.

My criteria for picking a car to use in Nigeria primarily focus on the probability of being attacked by armed robbers I consider it more dangerous than being in a head-on collision at 45mph in one of those cars.

There is more market for the Merz in the underworld than for all the other models and less for the 7-series.

Between the A8 and Phaeton I will take the VW both almost same with the 4.2l engine. Stay away from the W12 not made for Africa

I am not sure if he saw videos on these cars but I will post some for those who don't know what we are talking about I will pick a 2006 model year for comparison but I know you will get something newer

In my opinion considering price and value VW Phaeton wins.

Your dad wants a Mercedes, it is better he gets what he wants. The cost of shocks and electrical problems will be the same as getting the VW but that is what he wants. There are some VWs for sale in Nigeria have him check some of them out for testing and compare to the S500 which is more common

Slight update.

My contact in Cotonou sent me this.

Just sent it to the old man. Initial price is rather high but can be beat down.

It seems like we all got it wrong when you said you were looking at $80k luxury cars now you going to a car that is double the msrp on your initial list is mind boggling.

Maserati is exotic not just a luxury car those wheels won't last on Lagos roads so keep your driving to Abuja. I changed my mind go for the A8.

Your dad does not have money constraints so you have to determine if the car is for mobility where your initial list falls or class where you have Maybach, Rolls Royce etc. Maserati is a exotic sport car not a car to be chauffeur's type. The wheels show that it sport so you will feel all the road bumps compare to a S class or 7 series

If you have that kind of cash to spend and you are looking for awoof in Cotonou you might end up with awoof
