The New Testament Prophets Defined. by Nobody: 6:08am On Nov 02, 2014
Presently, the office and function of the prophet and the prophetic ministry, in general, has been misunderstood and misrepresented.

In some circles, there is confusion that it is non existent today or even if it is, the confusion is evident in the description of the ministry of the prophet.

I would like a mature christian honest view on this devoid of insults.

First of all, are you, Bidam willing to accept the truth or you just want to believe\hold to what you want to believe\hold unto concerning this subject?

2. We have to understand who a prophet is in the new testament and what prophecies are. Is it someone who speak or predict the future like that of the old testament? Or someone who teach revelation truth of God unlike the OT.

3. I believe there're NT prophets BUT THEY ARE NOT THOSE WHO TELL PEOPLE THE FUTURE OR PREDICT LIKE THE OLD TESTAMENT.

Okay sir...my boy grin I will do as you said sir. grin

Sir, first, the new testament doesn't establish the gift of prophet as the old testament. That is, a prophet in the new testament is not one who predict an event but one who interprets the divine will and purpose in inspired preaching and teaching. The reason, I believe is that, the old testament already predicted the new testament and such, the prophet of the new will have to interprets the divine will and purpose that were predicted in the old. Therefore, the new is the predicted of the old. If the new is to also predict, then the word is to be added to and there's no canon of scriptures.

2. I believe there is a gift of prophet in the NT but not what we see in the church today. That is, someone telling us or me, you will buy a car tomorrow. Or someone telling us, there's somebody here, the Lord said, all your enemies are going to die before you get home etc. These and the likes are not even prophecies in the first place.

3. There're few instances where "prophets" are mentioned in the new testament which the context refer to the prophets of old and this doesn't apply such to the new testament. One of the major confusion is, as a keep saying it, there's so much confusion of mixing the practices of old with the new testament. So, people mix and can't differentiate the operation of the gift of prophet in the old with that of the new.

4. We can begin to explore scriptures accordingly to see into the subject matter.

The basis of New Testment has been initiated but it hasnt come proper.

The so claim known prophets of god are not the True Prophets, they all are fake! Epecially when the base their belief and faith on christianity.

The re prophets, i mean the true prophets of the Creator. But they have not been confirmed. What confirms them is the Word and followers of the way. Acts 24:14; John 4:22-24.

What so many men are teachhing and claiming today are not "the Word"!!!!! Open yours eyes!!!

The truth is in principle, the two are similar in function, it is just that there is a difference in the way they operate.

I am of the opinion that the Office of the Prophet goes beyond edification, exhortation and encouragement. It also entails
direction (though not as prominent as the OT Prophet), confirmation of divine actions, revelations, correction and judgement.

However, when the Prophet releases directives to the Church, mechanisms should be in place to judge these and thereafter embrace the message. In this sense, the Prophetic word must be judged and validated by the written Word. All revelation transmitted by the Prophet must be congruent with the Word of God.

I will be happy if we could explore scriptures to back these assertions. Thanks.

Yes, as long as they don't run greedily after the error of balaam for profit and stay in line with scriptures they are genuine.

Mr Goshen, how now?

Where exactly is the place for 'thus says the Lord'? Prophets depended on God to get subjective information concerning the plans and requirements of God for His people. Prophets were the medium God used to speak to His people. The spirit of God rested on such people and God's word sprang forth from them.

The Bible have since replaced the prophets. All mysteries and revelations that pertains to life is well and fully documented in the bible. The past, the present and the future. No wonder Peter used it this way-

1 Peter 2
But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves.

Yes there was prolly a couple of people who said God said in the book of Acts. Remember Peter's statement in his book came years after those events in Acts.

Do you understand when a thing is fading out and a new one replacing it. 'Thus sayeth the Lord' was on its way out and the foundation of the Good book to the church was been laid by the Apostle of God to the body of Christ.

No i don't remember. All i remember is what Paul says in Ephesians 4:11. Prophets are one of the gifts Christ gave when He ascended and to my understanding they are not extinct if we are to follow scriptures.

First you need to clear your head from the erroneous theology that the office of the prophet is non existent in the NT.There are so many scripture that expose your error which you cannot brush aside with the wave of the hand. Though i am in agreement with Goshen that prophecy is for exhortation, encouragement and comfort,i am of the opinion that the Office of the Prophet went beyond edification, exhortation and encouragement. It also entails direction (though not as prominent as the OT Prophet), confirmation of divine actions, revelations, correction and judgement.

Soory was much in A HURRY.Here is the verse.
Ephesians 4:8-13 (ESV)

8 Therefore it says,

“When he ascended on high he led a host of captives,
and he gave gifts to men.

9 In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? 10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things. 11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood,to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
. So what's your point sir?

Ok, If you agree that the main purpose for these gifts isn't for self but for the body of Christ, perhaps we can look in to Paul's message to the Corinth church with that in hindsight.

Most of the time I ask you for the purpose for tongues today and its relevance to the church, there seem to be none. It all points back to self and what 'self' can get and not what the holistic mystical body can benefit.

Any spiritual practice that points us back to self negates what the gifts were given for i.e for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ

This are ministry gifts or doma gifts.

1 CORINTHIANS 12:28
28 And God hath set some in the church, first APOSTLES, secondarily PROPHETS,
thirdly TEACHERS, after that MIRACLES, then GIFTS OF HEALINGS, HELPS,
GOVERNMENTS, DIVERSITIES OF TONGUES.

There is a difference between ministry gifts and devotional gifts. The tongues is given to ALL believers as a devotional gift. The ministry gifts is not given to ALL believers.

1 Cor 12
29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?

30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

Every member of the body have what they are very good at because 'God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith' i.e the gift of God is given according to the will of Christ..
Roman 8
6 In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. 7 If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. 8 If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

Any gift we have is for the edification of Christ and not for self, do you agree?

No, how else do you explain these verses.

"He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself. . ." (1 Cor. 14:4).

1 CORINTHIANS 14:2 (Moffatt)
2 ... For he who speaks in a 'tongue' addresses God, not man; no one understands him;
he is talking of divine secrets in the Spirit.

Sincerity my brother.. Do all speak in tongues?

Don't hold this verse in isolation. What was the purpose for this chapter or the book as a whole?

There was contention, rivalry and show of flashy gifts within the church, Paul did not write to them to teach them tongues or teach them how to edify self. He was actually teaching unity in speech and charity/love for the edification of the body.

He also discouraged any tongue speaking if there is no gifted interpreter....do you have interpreters in your church?
