A 29-year-old terminally ill
woman whose right-to-die
campaigning rekindled a debate
across America has ended her
own life.
Last Saturday, Brittany Maynard,
who had been diagnosed with
brain cancer, swallowed lethal
drugs made available under
Oregon’s doctor-assisted suicide
law.
She “passed peacefully in her bed
surrounded by close family and
loved ones”, said the advocacy
group, Compassion & Choices.
Ms Maynard was diagnosed with
brain cancer on New Year Day
and was later told she had six
months to live.
She said she planned to take
prescribed medication to die
when her pain became
unbearable. She and her husband
moved from the San Francisco
Bay area to Oregon this year to
take advantage of the state’s law
that allows terminally ill residents
to end their lives with the
assistance of a physician.
She told journalists she planned
to die on November 1, shortly
after her husband’s birthday, but
reserved the right to move the
date forward or push it back.
Sean Crowley, a spokesman for
Compassion & Choices, said Ms
Maynard “suffered increasingly
frequent and longer seizures,
severe head and neck pain, and
stroke-like symptoms”.
“As symptoms grew more severe,
she chose to abbreviate the dying
process by taking the aid-in-dying
medication she had received
months ago,” he said.

She took the medication on Saturday and died peacefully in her bedroom, surrounded by her loved ones.
May her soul rest in peace. Amen,.

I can't begin to imagine the pains she must have been in. Cancer is a very painful disease, especially towards the later part. A neighbour of mine died of cancer of the cervix. Her cries of pains used to wake me up most nights. She became emaciated and dull after a while. I really felt for her.
