Botanical Name: Musa spp,
varieties: musa cavendishii, lacatan, gross michel.
Hybreed: paradisiaca spp,(Giant Elephant Plantain Specie
a.k.a AGBAGBA ERIN).
& valva spp.
Method of propagation:sucker plant
soil requirement: well drained rich loamy soil or clay loamy soil with a pH6.
land preparation: the bush must be cleared and burn the vegatative materials , then stumped, ploughed, harrowed & ridged. the land to be used must be choiced.
planting materials: are water shoot or bit, piper, sword sucker & maiden sucker.
Planting Period: April-September.
Rainfall: 150cm- 1300mm,pH 5-7.5
climatic reqirement: temperature of 21c-35c
spacing: 4.6x4.6m,or 5.5x5.5m depending on the varieties.
planting depth: the hole should be 60cmx60cm
Mulching: this prevent evaporation by covering the sucker with weeds after planting.
fertilizer application if need: 8:10:8 N.P.K, after planting 450-675gm is applied, two months later repeat apply 500gm.
Pruning: done regularly so as to remove overcrowded suckers.
Weeding: this should be done reguarly after 90days
Maturing Peroid: 6-18 month depending on the varieties.
Harvesting: cut the pseudostem down with a sharp cutlass, then cut the bunch stalk with sharp cutlass .
Diseases of Plantain
1.Eelworm(rhodopholus simillis): it attacks the roots of lacatan, cavendishii thereby creating galls in the roots
2.panama disease: fungal disease.
causal organism: fusarium oxysporum,
Transmission : through fungal hyphae in the soil tissue.
symptoms: it affects the whole vascular system, petioles collapse, leaves wither, the leaves turns yellow.
control: use only resistant varieties eg (Giant Elephant Plantain Specie
a.k.a AGBAGBA ERIN)
, paradisiaca spp & valva spp.
3.bunchy top: viral disease.
causal organism: cercospora mycosipharerelle.
transmission : through pierching and sucking insects.
symptoms: stunted growth,leaves develop curled edges.
controls of diseases
1.uproot and burn infected plants.
2.treat planting materials with chemicals eg nematicides, deldrin or aldrin 1-4hrs daily. before planting.
3. use only resistant hybreed varieties eg paradisiaca spp.(Giant Elephant Plantain Specie
a.k.a AGBAGBA ERIN).
