And let all say 'Amen'. Too many of them happening. In a school, an english teacher extorted N200 from each of the students in a class of about 60 students, promising them the school will give them a new english textbook. After days of waiting for the surprise textbook, a parent decided to ask the school authorities why the delay. Then, the man was summoned. You know what happened. He was fired.
Lately, I saw a poster with his photo on it, inviting yet another set of unsuspecting children to a motivational talk or something like that.

N200x60 students=N120,00

He just realised its a lucrative business

There are times those pleas are genuine. I was coming back to Lagos years ago as a student and all my money was stolen while i was scrambling to join a bus. On the way i was sooo thirsty. So when we stopped at the usual point for refreshment i told a certain guy to spare me some change for pure water. I was not even talking about food. It was with a heavy betrayed heart that i monitored the guy eating and then buying suya and then his drinks but to spare me N10 never happened. It dawned on me that he probably did not believe me. Today i hand out help to people because sometimes they may be genuine. But as for the brazen liars , shishi i no dey give.

I just made up my mind to assist anybody scam or no scam so far I can afford it.

In a Society where everyone in suit holding a bible is referred to as man of God, such occurrence is inevitable. These beggars goes to church on Sundays too and see how their pastors and G.O's feed fat and live the hip-hop life all because they beg indirectly quoting biblical verses to drain you out of your tithes and offering. Why blame them for entering buses to apply the same formats for the gullible preys they can find When they beg enough to build a church, they will also live the hip-hop life like our Bling Bling pastors undecided undecided undecided

I was at the Lagos barbeach many months back,
as i moved from the road into the sandy beach area,
a guy approached me and with a kind of tone that would make you pity him
he said: "Please help me with money to eat, i am a refugee from Liberia"
I simply looked at him and i replied: "me too, i am a refugee from kwara"
he just hissed and walked away from me.

Lets not also forget that out there, we still have some good guys too who perhaps just frankly are stranded as things didn't go as expected for them... Though the insincere ones are actually making it difficult to note and assist the sincere ones, but i suggest if there is the means, even if in our little way we could assist anyone who is polite enough to humbly ask of us. God applauds that too.

Did u give him?......just curious
AlfaSeltzer:
Some Nigerian beggars resort to fear mongering and threats. Once, one entered our bus, told us a story of how he used to be an armed robber but Jesus saved him and he repented. Then he asked for money. When people were reluctant to give him money, he said that if he were still an armed robber and carrying a gun, all of us would be giving him thousands but now that he is asking gently no one wants to give. He said it in a very menacing tone and people started giving him money.
Another time, I was at a motor park and one came and told me that he is a local dibia and that he has just seen the evil that my enemies have planned for me in the village. He said I should give him 5000 naira there and then so he can buy things to undo the village juju. He said if I didn't undo the juju, very bad things will happen to me that month.

The way and schematic LADIES employ to BEG nko... What's the difference between you girls and them

You meet a lady today and three days after, she starts PLAYING all nice and caring... only to ask you for a favour!!!

Op, go rest! Not- a - few girls today are modernized beggars... No difference!

Besides, the POOR will not cease from the land...Even if they disguise themselves under the canopy of God's work...

IT IS NOT TO COMPLAIN... they didn't hold you at gunpoint to give them... except those BOROROs (fake oyibo girls) whom I give when I have...If you have, give! If you don't, don't!

They need your help and mine too!

Those guys sweeping the bridges at Ikorodu Road, Obanikoro to be precise, I would rather give them money than someone that is hale and hearty. There are works-as-you-go in Lagos(conductors, women by hire purchase autorickshaw - tricycle and give to men to deliver at the end of the day)and those ashawo girls that just want money, recharge cards, latest phones, and many other things caring less how you got the money-they are many on our streets, at d higher institutions . They are just lazy. How about those that preach in the bus especially from Oshodi to Sango - Oga? Seeing visions. A friend once said, the problem with many Nigerians is religion, because we tie almost everything to religion.
A white friend once told me, if they had all we have in this country, WE WOULD REMAIN THEIR SLAVES FOREVER.

There's a particular woman in UNILAG, always along DLI road. Her line is 'brother ejo e help mi, mo wa stranded ni' meaning 'brother please help me, i'm stranded'. She always backs a baby & i've known her with that begging strategy since 2009.

I last saw her early this year & she tried again. I told her pointblank, 'you again'.

He murmured, bad market.

He miscalculated. He thought it would remain secret and add to his monthly salary which was about 30-40k. So he lost. I just confirmed from my sister. He collected from two classes: JSS1 (more than 58 students) and JSS2 (about 58 students). However, not all the students paid, so his expected fortune was not realized. He lost a salary greater than his loot. And since some students did not pay, he did not realize much: just enough to manage his parched greed for a moment.
Re: This Begging Business! by Nobody: 9:55pm On Nov 15, 2014
They don't fool me taya, I no dey give shi shi again. If you are stranded and I am going your way, no problems, I will pay, if you say you are not going my way, go to the bus that is heading your way, you will see someone there to assist with the fare, I have been stranded in the past and that was what I did exactly, I stood close to a loading bus and explained to a passenger, he asked to board and paid. With some few naira for bike when we got to the last bus top . I have equally payed payed for fares of people I don't know. Infact I don't refuse that of a person in the same bus with me if I have the money. Cos I know what it meant for someone to master courage to ask for t fare. Those days, I was roaming Lagos in the name of job interviews, i once had a stranger dash me 2k just like that, the okada I boarded knowing took me to a wrong street and took my money, I was complaining and he drove off just like that, I'm yet to get to my destination not to talk of going home and I'm already short of money, clutching my file, staring into space , debating wether to go home or continue when this stranger who have observed everything walked up to me and gave me 2k. I looked at him and he was like , don't worry, this is the direction to the place you are looking for. I thanked him, it was mixed reaction , I was greatful to him and at same time felt like a destitute on the street .it is one thing to beg money from friends and family but a total stranger, even though I didn't ask for it, I felt close to crying.
As for those prayer merchants, no be today, I don't bother with them at all.

The only one that haunts me is that of a man that approached me at a pharmacy very close to crystal specialist hospital Akowonjo , I was about driving out when he knocked on my window, I wind down thinking I had maybe scratched him or something only for him to show me drug prescription he said was for his son and he need a balance of 1000 to complete the money, I moved to give him the money but stopped, I weighed him from head to toe and could not ascertain if this one is real abi scam. I arrived at a conclusion that it must be a scam and drove off but it never left my mind since, I was thinking that maybe I should have got down and at least checked at that pharmacy if the drug is avaialable there. Who knows, he might be saying the truth. But the thing is I dont like spending time with them make their jazz no catch me in case they carry jazz.

Oga that is not love. Encouraging laziness cannot be love. You want to show love ? Then you will advice them to look for how to render services for payment and not sit around a bus stop all day telling lies about how they are stranded. You only sending a wrong message to those who are actually working and making less to abandon their jobs and beg. I was once trekking home from lecture sometimes last year and a man in a car seeing how well dressed I am slowed down beside me and begged me for money to fuel in his car. I just looked at him and walked away, I could have abused him as I was really hungry and didn't eat before leaving for lectures but I didn't want to cause any trouble with someone who was clearly bigger and stronger than me.

When I was in secondary school, a woman usually come to my school and other schools around, begging for alms and we would part with some or all of our lunch money. One day I told my mum about the woman and about how I had been benevolent. She told me never to part with my money again. That this same beggar had often peddled her school when she was also in secondary school and had amassed fortune and built a three storey building in her home state with alms money.

My dear you,are so on point, but come to think of it you discouraging the hardworking artisans who toils day and night to fend for him/her self. E.g shoemakers, polish for 20 naira depending on the area, he makes max 500naira daily, while a beggar makes 1500 or even more. On a second thought he/she would be like why am I wasting time under the sun when I can make more BEGGING.
what I do is this I encourage those working by giving them outrageous amount for service rendered e.g knife sharper I give 200 naira for a service of 30 naira, also doorman at fastfood joints , shoemakers etc in order words u are encouraging hardwork and not promoting begging . WITH EXCLUSION OF THE REALLY CHALLENGED ONES

The Americans are known by some to tip well. That's how they encourage their citizens to work hard. The average American did odd jobs at some time. Check out the biographies of Zig Ziglar, Sylvester Stallone, Benjamin Carson, Richard Wright and many more. But they're usually encouraged by fellow citizens, not minding those that'll jeer. This year, a story of a woman who tipped a waiter in a restaurant so much that she could further her college education appeared on Yahoo News.

I can still remember this crippled guy on those mini wheelers selling candy in traffic. I gave him 500 bucks for embracing hard work and not letting his disability affect him in any way.
I never hand out cash to beggars, I have been stranded before, I jus walk up to the bus driver and ask for a free ride with a pity face and they usually allow you.
