In our looks-obsessed society, lots of people think that being overweight is an appearance issue only but it goes beyond that! Being overweight is actually a medical concern because it can seriously affect a person's health.

The health problems that stem from being overweight go way beyond the ones we usually hear about, like diabetes and heart disease. Being overweight can also affect a person's joints, breathing, sleep, mood, and energy levels to mention a few.

What Overweight Really Is.

When you eat more calories than you burn off, your body stores the extra calories as fat. Extra body fat are not a health risk for most people but when you keep up on eating more calories than you burn, more and more fat builds up in your body. Eventually, your body gets to a point where the excess fat can have a negative effect on you.
Doctors use the terms "overweight" or "obese" to describe when someone is at risk of developing weight-related health problems.

Why Do People Become Overweight?

Have you observed that obesity seems to run in some families? Some people have a genetic tendency to gain weight more easily than others because they burn calories more slowly. This was an advantage years back when food was scarce but it's not the case in our time. Our world now abounds with high calorie snacks, fast foods and others delicacies which are attractive. The situation isn't even helped because at times, people turn to food for emotional reasons, such as when they feel upset, anxious, sad, stressed out, or even bored. When this happens, they often eat more than they need.

The Health Problems of Being Overweight..

Obesity is bad news for both your body and mind. Not only can it make you feel tired and uncomfortable, carrying extra weight puts added stress on your body, especially your bones and joints. As time goes by, obese people are more likely to develop diabetes and heart disease.

Some of the physical and emotional problems that may affect overweight people include:

1. Bent legs.

2. Asthma.

3. High blood pressure.

4. High cholesterol.

5. Diabetes (more insulin is made in the body to absorb the excess sugar. This affects its quality over time)

6. Arthritis (excess body fat increases pressure on joints of the legs especially, creating pains)

7. Sleep apnea (inability to breathe properly while sleeping due to the fat, putting pressure on the respiratory organs).

8. Gallstones (Bile is vital in breaking down fat. An accumulation of bile becomes inevitable which hardens in the gallbladder to form gallstones. These may be painful, so requiring surgery).

9. Fatty liver (When fat accumulates in the liver, it can cause inflammation, scarring and permanent liver damage).

10. Infertility (Women who are overweight may miss periods or not get their periods at all. They may also have elevated testosterone "male hormone" levels in the blood).

11. Fibroids (In most obese women, the chances of fibroids developing are great when there are high insulin levels in their blood. Insulin is required to absorb excess sugar in the body)

12. Depression (People who are obese are more likely to be depressed and have a low self-esteem).

It's obvious to you that these above problems resulting from overweight shouldn't be taken lightly. Nevertheless, it's absolutely true that every problem has a solution. The problem of overweight isn't left out.
