Crime / Alleged N4.9B Fraud: Court Remand, Fani-kayode, Usman In Prison Custody by 1trillionlikes: 2:50pm On Jun 28, 2016 |
Justice Sule Hassan of a Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday ordered the prison remand of former ministers, Femi Fani-Kayode and Nenandi Usman over money laundering. The two former ministers were charged by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) alongside one Danjuma Yusuf and a company, Joint Trust Nigeria Limited, on alleged money laundering to the tune of N4.9 billion. Justice Hassan ordered the prison remand of the accused persons soon after their arraignment pending when he will hear their bail applications on Friday. Fani-Kayode and Usman, former ministers of Aviation and Finance respectively, had pleaded not guilty to the 17 count charge preferred against them by the anti- graft agency. Politics / 'story On Okah's Escape Not True' by 1trillionlikes: 1:01pm On Jun 25, 2016 |
The Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) has refuted reports in a section of the media that a brother of Henry Okah, jailed leader of the Movement For The Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) Charles Okah has escaped from Kuje Prison in Abuja. The Public Relations Officer of the Service, Francis Enobore told Daily Trust on the phone that he was in touch with his men on ground after the rumour filtered in but there was no truth in the story. "It is not true, Charlse Okah is still in custody. I have been in touch with our men in the prison facility and there is nothing like that [Okah escaping]," Enobore said. Saharareporters had reported earlier in the day that a prison inmate informed the medium that Mr. Okah, who had been on trial in Abuja for the 2010 Independence Day bombing that killed 27 people, escaped last night by simply scaling the prison walls of the prison around 7:30 PM Nigerian time. The online medium claimed he escaped in the company of another prison inmate, adding that a massive manhunt had commenced to find and rearrest him. www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/-story-on-okah-s-escape-not-true/152614.html?platform=hootsuite 1 Like |

Politics / Lai Mohammed In Beijing, Says Nigerian Media, Most Vibrant In Africa by 1trillionlikes: 12:25pm On Jun 21, 2016 |
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has described the Nigerian media as one of the most vibrant in Africa and indeed across the world, while assuring that the government will not do anything to stifle press freedom. Speaking at the 3rd Forum on China-Africa Media Cooperation in Beijing, China, on Tuesday, the Minister said the Nigerian media did not achieve its vibrancy by accident, saying apart from the fact that it derives its powers to function directly from the nation’s Constitution, the Nigerian media has come a long way. ‘’Of course, the Nigerian media is a veteran of the country’s battle of independence, and of the battle to end long years of military rule in the country. Battle hardened over the years and empowered by the Constitution and the relatively new Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, you take on the Nigerian media at your own peril,’’ he said. Alhaji Mohammed said unlike in other countries where the media is at the mercy of the government, the reverse is the case in Nigeria where, he said, the government is at the mercy of the media. ‘’On our part as Government, we do not intend to do anything to stifle press freedom. Media practitioners have nothing to fear from us. Of course, as I hinted earlier, we are the ones who have much to fear from the media practitioners. ‘’As a government, we believe that democracy itself is imperiled when the media is in chains. We see the media as a partner in progress, not some enemy to be crushed. But we also expect a high level of responsible journalism, the type that puts the collective interest above individual consideration, the type that safeguards the truth rather than push out rumors as fact,’’ the Minister said. Noting that power without control is a recipe for disaster, he said it is important for media practitioners, especially those in the Social Media, to self regulate in order to remain credible and viable. ‘’Putting the awesome power of the media in the hands of not just professional journalists but citizen journalists, many of whom neither subscribe to any code of ethics nor respect the laws of the land, could be catastrophic. Little wonder then that rumours have donned the garb of the truth and reputations long built and nurtured are being rubbished under the guise of the Social Media. ‘’Make no mistake about it, the democratization of information gathering and dissemination has its advantages…But there must be some form of control. Let me be clear, the Nigerian government has no plans, either in the short or long run, to regulate the media, whether traditional or new. But we will continue to advocate self regulation on the part of all concerned for, ultimately, lack of self control can only lead to self destruction,’’ Alhaji Mohammed said. The Minister called for continuous capacity building for media practitioners, whether in form of training, exchange of personnel or even by exposing the practitioners to how things are done in other lands, so that they can play their important role more effectively. He told the Forum, which comprised Ministers and other top government officials, media practitioners and academics from Africa and China, that Nigeria is on course to meeting the June 2017 deadline of migrating from analogue to digital broadcasting. ‘’After missing previous deadlines, we are set to meet the new deadline of June 2017. This past April, we successfully set the ball rolling by launching the pilot phase of the migration from analogue to digital broadcasting in the city of Jos. ‘’We are now in the process of expanding this to other parts of our vast country. We will succeed, because there is no shortage of political will on the part of the government, or of unalloyed support and dedication on the part of other stakeholders, to make it happen. ‘’The benefits of digital broadcasting are immense, especially for the young population in our continent. Beyond anything else, it will provide the platform for their creative talents to blossom, as the demand for high quality content skyrockets. This will in turn put many to work and help in addressing perhaps the biggest challenge that we face as a continent: How to provide gainful employment for our teeming youths,’’ Alhaji Mohammed said. He challenged African journalists to change the negative narrative about their continent by ‘’daring to tell the African story of challenges that are being taken on with determination, the story of great strides even with so much still to be done, and the story of hope that will give our citizens reasons to dream big, instead of risking it all to escape to other lands in search of better life’’. www.vanguardngr.com/2016/06/lai-mohammed-in-beijing-says-nigerian-media-most-vibrant-in-africa/ |
Crime / Ex-minister Jumoke Akinjide Absconds As EFCC Remands Oyo PDP Chairman by 1trillionlikes: 9:25am On Jun 21, 2016 |
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission last week obtained an interim order from the Lagos State Magistrate Court, Ikeja District, to remand the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Oyo State Chapter, Yinka Taiwo in its custody for the next 30 days. The detention order will enable operatives of the Commission progress with investigations and prevent any interference in the alleged illegal disbursement of monies running into billions of Naira belonging to the Federal Government of Nigeria through some banks to politicians in the eve of the last general elections. A source in the commission said, "acting on intelligence reports received in 2015, the PDP Chairman Yinka Taiwo together with one Senator Ayo Ademola Adeseun and Oloye Jumoke Akinjide, a former Minister of State Federal Capital Territory in Goodluck Jonathan's government, fraudulently received the sum of N650,000,000:00 (six hundred and fifty million Naira) which they converted to their personal use and the use of others". The money according to our source was routed through a new generation commercial bank and disbursed to some politicians for the purpose of 'facilitating' the Presidential elections. However, the third suspect Oloye Jumoke Akinjide is said to be at large, while EFCC is going on with its investigations. www.saharareporters.com/2016/06/21/ex-minister-jumoke-akinjide-absconds-efcc-remands-oyo-pdp-chairman-yinka-taiwo-over-n650m |

Politics / FIRS Job Scandal: Full List Of 349 New Staff Secretly Hired by 1trillionlikes: 3:54pm On Jun 15, 2016 |
A few months after a secret employment exercise by the Central Bank of Nigeria was unearthed by SaharaReporters, another government agency has been hit by a similar scandal. This time the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), headed by Mr. Babatunde Fowler, a protege of Bola Tinubu, the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) has been found to have overseen recruitment excercises in violation of Nigeria's rules of public advertisement. FIRS, under Fowler, recently employed 3489 new staff. The recruitment exercise, SaharaReporters authoritatively gathered, was not preceded by a public advertisement of vacancies to be filled and approval by the Federal Character Commission as the service rules stipulate. The newly employed persons were inducted in Abuja last Wednesday. Fowler, who was appointed last August by President Muhammadu Buhari, had previously been accused of indifference to service rules on employment by secretly hiring 250 new staff. However, his accusers, could not make the charge stick, as he claimed those hired are not full-time employees but consultants. The latest findings, however, are accompanied by substantial evidence including the list of new recruits, complete with their states of origin, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, academic qualifications, recommended ranks and proposed duty stations. The list, exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters, showed that six of the new recruits are of the position of deputy director, while 10 are assistant directors. Thirty-four others are of the rank of deputy manager, while the rest are made up of senior managers, managers, assistant managers and officers. All the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are represented on the list. Akwa Ibom State, for example, got six slots, while Gombe has 13. Ondo State is a beneficiary of 13 slots. Lagos State, where Fowler hails from, was awarded 14 slots. Katsina got 18, Kano 15 and Borno 23. Rivers State was given 14 slots. But in certain cases, the list does not show the states of origin and education qualifications of some of the new staff, making it difficult to know they states of origin and qualifications. Wahab Gbadamosi, FIRS acting Director of Information, told a news website last week that relevant agencies of government approved the recruitment. "Your enquiry on the targeted recruitment at the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS refers. We wish to respond as follows: Please note that requisite agencies of government approved the targeted recruitment by the FIRS. Due Process-in recruiting into a Federal Government agency- was followed; The FIRS is a conscientious, law-abiding institution which adheres to statutory rules and procedures; The FIRS is focused on its duty to collect revenue to fund the national budget and pleads that it should be allowed to concentrate on its 2016 target of N4. 9 trillion,” he was quoted to have responded via email. Noticeably absent from the mail, however, are whether the vacancies were advertised or not and the names of the relevant agencies that green-lighted the recruitment. As with the CBN recruitment scandal, the list of employed persons reeks of nepotism. www.saharareporters.com/2016/06/15/federal-inland-revenue-service-job-scandal-full-list-349-new-staff-secretly-hired-tunde 1 Like |

Politics / EFCC Raids Obanikoro’s House, Carts Away Cars, Other Valuables by 1trillionlikes: 3:56am On Jun 15, 2016 |
By Evelyn Usman Lagos —Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC yesterday, stormed the Ikoyi home of former Minister of State for Defence, Mr Musiliu Obanikoro and allegedly went away with some vehicles and other valuables. Obanikoro was not at home when they visited, as he was said to be out of the country. Obanikoro’s media aide, Jonathan Eze, alleged that the officials harassed occupants of the building, among whom was Obanikoro’s wife. Eze, in a statement issued to Vanguard at about 7.40pm said “Today, (yesterday) officials of EFCC invaded Senator Obanikoro houses in Ikoyi with unnecessary force and harassment of occupants who are mainly kids, teenagers, his wife and daughters in-law, carting away cars, wristwatches and other valuables. “This is against the backdrop of the fact that the anti- graft agency has never invited him or his son for questioning beyond the allegations they have been propagating in the media. ''We are using this medium to draw the attention of all Nigerians to yet another infringement on the fundamental and inalienable rights of the Obanikoro family. ''Lovers of freedom should not wait until our democracy is put at irreversible damage. The list of human rights violations and political persecution has reached an alarming rate. “We see this as a further show of shame of this present administration which is hell bent on politically persecuting its perceived opponents in other to stoop them and rubbish their hard earned reputation of untainted public services. “To our chagrin, the vehicles driven away were cars and trucks bought since 2006 and thereabouts, when Senator Obanikoro served as an Ambassador in Ghana among others which obviously has no bearing with the purported investigation they are supposedly carrying out. ''Senator Obanikoro has consulted with his Lawyers and is prepared to meet them in court to stop this intrusions and persecution” Eze stated. Spokesperson for the Commission, Wilson Uwajaren who confirmed the raid, said; “Its true that our men went there today. Its part of the investigation involving Obanikoro and his two sons . But nobody was harassed. Anybody familiar with the EFCC knows that we don’t harass people. Our men went there to do their lawful duty”. www.vanguardngr.com/2016/06/efcc-raids-obanikoros-house-carts-away-cars-valuables/ |
Politics / FG To Court: DSS Can’t Release Shi’ite Leader, Zakzaky by 1trillionlikes: 3:45am On Jun 15, 2016 |
By Ikechukwu Nnochiri ABUJA— The Federal Government, yesterday, gave reasons why the detained leader of the Shi’ite Islamic sect, Sheikh Ibraheem el-Zakzaky, will not be released from detention, saying it was keeping him to stave off circumstances that made Boko Haram sect turn violent in 2009. It told the court that Zakzaky was on December 14, 2015, taken into protective custody by the Department of State Services, DSS, following an intelligence report that he was going to be killed. The Federal Government, which made the disclosure while responding to a N2 billion fundamental rights enforcement suit by the detained Islamic leader, filed through his lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), said: “It is common knowledge that it was after the extra-judicial killing of the former leader of Boko Haram , Mohammed Yusuf, in police custody that the group, which prior to that, had operated quietly metamorphosed into a full blown terrorist group, plaguing the country and has killed thousands of people in various attacks. “Up till this present time, despite the efforts of the Nigerian Army to quell the activities of this deadly group, the north-eastern part of Nigeria has been rendered unsafe as terrifying activities of Boko Haram in that area have turned the indigenes of these communities into displaced persons, who now live in camps around the country in the most deplorable conditions. “The 1st respondent believes that if the applicant, who is the leader of Islamic Movement of Nigeria, one of the largest Islamic groups in the country, is allowed to be killed as revealed in the security report, the country may be plunged into another Boko Haram crisis, which was what necessitated the remand of the applicant in protective custody until it can be ascertained that he is no longer in such danger.” Besides, government, through a 13-paragraph counter- affidavit dated June 9, deposed by one Ayodeji Ibitoye, an operative in the Legal Services Department of DSS, told the court that to save the applicant’s life, he was evacuated to the service’s medical facility. www.vanguardngr.com/2016/06/fg-court-dss-cant-release-shiite-leader-zakzaky/ |
Education / Aregbesola Threatens To Expel Students ‘wearing Choir Robes’ To Schools by 1trillionlikes: 3:31am On Jun 15, 2016 |
The Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun on Tuesday said students who wore unauthorised cloths to any public schools in the State would be expelled henceforth. Aregbesola stated this at the commissioning of St Micheal’s Government Middle School, Ibokun while reacting to different choir robes and garments wore to Baptist High School in Iwo by some Christian students. He said it was wrong and criminal for a section or group of people to have directed some innocent students to wear choir robes to schools against court’s judgment. He urged whoever was not satisfied with the judgment to ventilate the grievance through legitimate means rather than trying to cause crises by resorting to self help. According to him,``Government is not interested in any religion as being speculated. My goal is to improve education standard in the state.’’ Deputy Governor Titilaoye Tomori, who doubles as the Commissioner for Education, said the inauguration of the school had confirmed their mission statement in education. Tomori said no fewer than 20 elementary, 22 middle and 17 high schools had either been commissioned or were at final stages of commissioning. State Chairman, Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mr Felix Awofisayo urged people to pay tax so that government can do more. Some students of Iwo Baptist High School wore church garments and robes to school on Tuesday in reaction to the court ruling allowing Muslim female students to wear veils (hijab) to schools. www.vanguardngr.com/2016/06/aregbesola-threatens-expel-students-wearing-choir-robes-schools/ |
