Ever had some easterners go postal on you when you spell or pronounce Igbo as "Ibo"? Well, you are not alone. A lot of easterners get offended when they hear or see "Ibo" spoken or spelt instead of "Igbo". That is quite understandable. But the question is this: is there any need for that? The answer will be in asking and answering-: will there be any need for any form of outrage from a French man or woman if you spelt the romance language of the French people as "French" instead of "Français"? Your answer would be no. That means that those offensive comments you get for spelling Igbo as Ibo are unnecessary. The reason is because every language has a word for every other language that may differ form that language's origin name. For example in English, Francais is known as French. In French English is known as L'anglais. Whlie España is Spanish in English, it is Espagnol in French. In Épié, for example, Ibo is called "Igbun". So while it is "Igbo" in the eastern language, it is "Ibo" in English. So it doesn't in any way derogate the sacredness or value of the language, the people or their culture. It is just normal. How would you feel if someone asked you: do you speak Francais? Or tu parle French? You would definitely want it the other way round. So, also is there no need getting upset with someone who says or writes "Ibo" instead of Igbo. He is writing in English, and in English "Igbo" is "Ibo". Just as "geesi" is "English" in Yoruba. Don't forget that "gb" isn't existent in the English alphabet. 1 Like |

Does this issue deserve a thread? If a people say they do not like the European corruption of their name and would prefer if they were addressed by the original form of the name, I do not see why that should be a problem. Putting the 'gb' sound there can't be difficult; it's not as if other Nigerian groups (with the possible exception of the Hausa) don't have a 'gb' sound in their languages In any case, there are other examples of groups who do not like the names other groups use for them and even consider such names derogatory, even when such other groups do not use those names in a negative context. 2 Likes |

Op, what will you say of those(non igbos) that correct my igbo for ibo. I will fill igbo as my tribe and they will tell me "igbo is the language and ibo the tribe. Smh |

tonychristopher: Hausa is Hausa , not Awusa. That is the Igbo and Yoruba accent of pronunciation. And Yorubas also call Ibadan, Ibadan. That is not an error Ishekiris are actually more properly known as the "Iwerre", which was later corrupted into 'Warri" Omo Iwerre -> Om'Iwerre means an Itshekiri child or person. Benin is actually originally "Ibini" 1 Like |
