do some more research you might realise that their owning farm is not purely down to their love for agro-business Follow the money trail on yearly Government funds allocated for promoting agriculture and you might get nearer the truth 1 Like |

mikeansy:I have not read yet where OBJ talks about sponsoring the coup in which Muritala Mohammad was assassinated, and executing dozens of people to cover up or the massacre of Tiv civilians in Zaki Biam Benue State. I did hear he spoke about his program In the late 1970s Olusegun Obasanjo embarked upon "Operation Feed the Nation." His civilian successor, President Shehu Shagari, continued the program as the "Green Revolution." . The World Bank loans equaled over $1.5 billion. In terms of contribution to the national GDP, agriculture was a leading sector in the 1950s and 1960s, accounting for 63 percent of the GDP in the period 1960 to 1964 with the share of food imports in the country’s total import low during the period, to about 9.6 percent (Aigbokhan, 2001). However, there was a sharp decline in the share of the sectors contribution to national GDP from the 1970s reducing from 54percent in 1969 to 33percent in 1974 which was also the period that marked the watershed in Nigerian economic history through the 1973/74 crude oil price stocks (Aigbokhan, 2001). The military regimes of Murtala and Obasanjo benefited from oil revenues that increased 350 percent between 1973 and 1974, when oil prices skyrocketed, to 1979, when the military stepped down. Increased revenues permitted government spending for infrastructure and improvements on a large scale; critics thought it was poorly planned and concentrated too much in urban areas. Comparing the contribution of agriculture: Crude oil to National GDP between 1981-2003, Balogun (2001) and Aigbokhan, (2001) found that agricultural exportsThe contribution according to the scholars decreased further to 5.7percent in the period 1975 to 1979; 2.7percent in 1980-1984; 5.6percent in 1985 to 1989 and nose-diving to the lowest in 1990- 1994 accounting for only 1.8percent before increasing back to 8.6 percent in the period 1994 to 1998. 1 Like |

When Dr. Michael Okpara became the Eastern Region’s first Premier and declared his ‘agricultural revolution’ that state wealth creation through the establishment of large-scale state run plantations became an explicit objective (ENDC, 1962). (McHenry, 1985). During the height of the ENDC in 1966, its landholdings exceeded 60,000 ha; more than 80% of this area located in what is now CRS (Committee on the Management and Financing of Cross River State Estates, 1990). It was also during this early post-Independence period that foreign investors were again able to acquire land, which saw the establishment of large new private plantations by Dunlop (rubber), UAC (oil palm), the Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC) (oil palm), and the Danish Nigeria Agricultural Company (DANAC) (banana) (UAC, 1956; DANAC, 1957; ENDC, 1962).

The statement credited to the President of Nigeria Aremu Olusegun Obasanjo through one of the news media that the president’s farm makes an average of $250,000 a day calls for investigation. I hope all the workers are being paid well. With a lucrative investment that yields over 57 billion annual revenue, one will want to assume that this company is actively playing it’s social responsibilities in Ota community right? 1 Like
