Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, yesterday made good its threat to shut the nation’s ports operations over lingering disputes with government.

Some of the grievances of the union are unpaid wages and other issues affecting the Tally Clerks/On-board Security, minimum standard for Dockworkers and NPA staff welfare matters among others.

Reports shows that workers were withdrawn from their duty posts across the port formations in Lagos, Warri, Port Harcourt’s, Calabar and Onne, effectively crippling all operations nationwide. Both Presidents of Dockworkers and Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA branches of MWUN, Mr.

Adewale Adeyanju and Adeleke Sanni, respectively, addressed the workers at both Apapa and Tin Can Ports and assured them that the issues would be fought to a logical conclusion.

Lamenting the loss incurred as a result of the strike, President of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents, ANLCA, Alhaji Shittu Olayiwola said when members of the MWUN were on strike, the agents would not be able to work. According to Shittu, “agents cannot work because the Dockworkers are needed to do examination on containers just as stevedores are also needed for vessels to discharge.

Shittu called on the management of NPA to rise up to the occasion and resolve the matter for industrial peace of the industry, saying “for every day that the ports are shut, both the Federal Government and other port operators lose not less than N10billion.

It is not just members of the freight forwarding groups; everybody is affected whenever there is a strike of this magnitude.”

Goats! If dem wan start Xmas holiday early make dem talk so. Everybody is going on strike a few days to Christmas. Nonsense! Money don loss e don loss. Nothing wey dem go do for una again until next budget. Simple. People better buckle up in this country sha, cos as long as these idio.ts keep getting re-elected, it can only get worse. The bumper harvests of the oil boom is over. Ask state govt workers: 3-5 months salaries owed and they are even tired of striking. Politicians no dy fear Nigerians again cos we too mumu! End of story.

Something I have never understood is this: why can't the government just set aside the salaries & entitlements of all its workers immediately the payment period approaches monthly?
Plain wickedness or what?

Am looking @ all these from a different angle.First was medical workers on strike,Nepeng/Pengasan joined, now marite workers and power utilities companies planning to embark on strike immediately after christmans due to some of their colleagues not been paid their severance and part of their 2013 housing allowance,15 months non payment..........I believe the beginning of end to GEJ govt is near.GEJ till 29-05-2015.

Jonathan is a failure in all ramifications. Not a single sector is working in this country yet he took all the time in the world to explain to us the difference between stealing and corruption!!

It seems that the only people going on these strikes are headed by yoruba and hawusa people. Chai born to rule. But I will still vote GEJ. They are suddenly all going on strike to frustrate and disenfranchise GEJ's supporters, part of lets make the country ungovernable for him
this time its against Igbos, well it won't work. ApC mice can abuse me how they like I don't care.
