Captain Steven Gerrard is set to return to the Liverpool team after being rested for the victory at Aston Villa.

Adam Lallana could feature after returning as an unused substitute from a thigh injury in that game.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has an almost fully-fit squad to choose from but could choose to make a few changes.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois may return after three games out with a minor finger injury but Cesar Azpilicueta is set to miss out with a groin problem.

With Premier League leaders Chelsea side still going strong in the FA Cup and Champions League, the Capital One Cup is just one of four trophies that Jose Mourinho has his eye on this season.

And while its glamour and prestige may not match the other three, it would be fitting were the League Cup to be the first piece of silverware won on his return to the club.

For it was also his maiden trophy in his first stint with the Blues, when Chelsea beat Liverpool 3-2 in the final.

This time they must overcome the Reds in the semi-final - and for Mourinho, a visit to Anfield for the first leg has bitter-sweet memories.

Chelsea lost a Champions League semi-final there in 2005 after a controversial Luis Garcia goal but have had more success recently, including a win that derailed Liverpool's title bid last season, and a 2-1 victory in November.

"I have difficult memories at Liverpool as to lose a Champions League semi-final to a goal which was not a goal stays forever. You don't forget it," said the Portuguese manager.

"But we played there a couple of months ago and it's a historical stadium - who doesn't like to go there and play? Everybody likes it, I like it, my players like it and it's only good feelings to play at Anfield."

Liverpool have failed to beat Chelsea in any of their five meetings under Brendan Rodgers but the Reds have been building up momentum after a slow start to the season.

They are unbeaten in eight games in all competitions, and haven't lost at Anfield since that defeat to Chelsea in November, and Rodgers believes Tuesday's game will be a different encounter.

"When we last played them, we weren't in a good moment but we're developing, improving and confidence is very high," said Rodgers.

The 41-year-old was part of Mourinho's staff in the 2005 League Cup win, and now has his eyes on establishing his own dynasty with his first trophy as Liverpool manager.

"We see this as an opportunity this season to win a trophy. It's a group that's forming - and winning a trophy, a competition, could really bring the future of the team on," he said.

"Over the last 10 years, [Chelsea] have shown once you win the first one, you can go on and sustain it. They will tell you that first trophy was the most important.

"We know if you want to win the competition you have to beat the best teams."

history. Liverpool have won three of the
previous matches but they lost the 2005
final.
Chelsea have lost just one of their last
seven league and cup games against
Liverpool (W4, D2).

with Diego Costa scoring the winner.
