Newly admitted students of the University of Ilorin have been told that the key to the realisation of their goals is to adhere to the two cardinal principles of success by obeying the rules of the University and shunning vices.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), stated this last Monday (December 22, 2014) while addressing the 12,650 new students during their matriculation ceremony.
Prof. Ambali told the fresh students, “You will fly high in this University and afterwards, by extension, if you uphold two principles: do what is right and shun what is wrong. These two keys will open doors for you and you will realise that you will be up there competing with the stars, far above others.”
In his address, entitled “Arise and Fly”, Prof. Ambali further broke down the two rules into ten points, the first five of which implored the students to: have faith and self-confidence, adhere strictly to the University rules and regulations, attend lectures punctually, work hard on their studies and personal health and imbibe the spirit of humility and self-respect.
On the other hand, the Vice-Chancellor said that the other five points are deterrence against vices such as examination malpractice, associating with unregistered groups and associations, indecent dressing, engaging in physical assault and disobedience to constituted authority.
Prof. Ambali pointed out that “although everyone with native wisdom and good conscience knows what is right and wrong, many people still find themselves on the wrong lane”, and told the new students to appreciate that the choices they make now eventually determine their future in the University.
Congratulating the students on their admission to the University, the Vice-Chancellor informed them that their population is just about 11 percent of the 114,700 applicants to the University for the 2014/2015 academic session. He disclosed that only 41, 470 of the applicants scored 180 marks in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board's Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (JAMB/UTME) while 22,601 passed the University's post-UTME screening.
Prof. Ambali, who added that 80 of the new intakes are international students, explained that the University of Ilorin was witnessing an influx of applicants because of its rating as the best in the country and 20th in Africa.
He, therefore, charged the new students to make the best use of the opportunity their admission has provided them, obey the school's rules and shun cultism, warning that it could lead to expulsion.
The Vice-Chancellor, who backed his counsel with scriptural allusion, told the fresh students how the first created man and woman got themselves expelled from paradise by failing to abide by the conditions of their residence there.
The British-trained Professor of Veterinary Medicine also admonished the students on the need to read wide and study well, saying that their admission was provisional and that their performance in their first year would determine whether they would be considered academically fit to belong to the University of Ilorin community or not.
At the end of the event, the Registrar of the University of Ilorin, Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi, administered the Oath of Matriculation on the fresh students. He told them that they would become bonafide students of the University only after signing the Matriculation Register and their parents had signed the Indemnity Oath .
Speaking with Unilorin Bulletin, after the ceremony, one of the fresh students, Bakare Sofia of the Department of Mass Communication, said that Unilorin was her choice University because of its stable academic calendar, which also makes her parents, who live far away, have a great trust in the University.
On his part, another fresher, Famojuro Adeniyi of the Department of Computer Science, expressed happiness over his matriculation. He said that he chose the University of Ilorin because his friends, who study at the University, intimated
him about the University's uninterrupted academic calendar. He expressed hope to be one of the best professionals in the field of ICT in the next four years by reading and following the latest trends in his field.
For Muhammad Abdulkudus of Computer Science Department, his happiness stemmed from the fact that he now has a matriculation number which means that he is now a bonafide student after his second attempt to gain admission to the University.
Another fresh student, Akinyemi Muhammed of the Faculty of Law, expressed gratitude to God, saying he particularly felt good because his journey to the University had not been an easy one.
Another fresh Law student, Emmanuel Ojo, said that he chose Unilorin because of its reputation as a citadel of excellence, which he said the University earned on account of its level of discipline
