Owls Don't Cry In Vain by lyricalpontiff(m): 8:21am On Jan 09, 2015
I live close to the village square
But last night, I had a nightmare
I woke to the chirp of the cricket and fireflies
But the owls cried out their eyes
On top of a withered iroko tree
All night the eyes of the moon were sleep free
I’ve been bothered not by the owls tears
But my people all have rock for ears
The cry of the owls didn’t disturb their snore
But I kept vigil sitting by my door
This morning, I see gyrating vultures under the rain
They know owls don’t cry in vain
The rain got tired but the morning still slow
No wonder, vultures know what the owls know
Now I’m numbering littered corpses
Killers conducting autopsies
I see refugees with loads on trucks and wheelbarrows
I still see those with spears and poisoned arrows
Before these children became orphans and wives widows
Last night I knocked on all doors and windows
The stars and moon will bear witness
Of how you drank sleep and licked its sweetness
You should have heard the wailing owls
Their tears can fill up bowls
Now the black smoke in the air spells war
I wonder what those bulbous eyes of the owls saw
We chose canon over reason
Amnesty over prison
No light, we prefer darkness
No sanity just madness
Tyranny over freedom
For a plate of porridge, we sold our wisdom
Where are the voices that preached free and fair
Now “by any means my brother must remain there”
We trade conscience for stomach infrastructure
And now we question the dance of the vultures
Vultures smile when owls cry
But you and I call it a small fry
