For Adekunle Adeyeri, August 17, 2014 shall remain memorable.

It was a day the young forex trader and trainer suddenly fell ill as he was taking his bath in preparation for Sunday service.

The 46-year-old, who narrated his ordeal on his sick bed at the Hamkad Specialist Hospital in Abule Egba, Lagos State, when our correspondent visited him, said since that fateful Sunday, life had never been the same for him.

Adeyeri said, “I was in the bathroom preparing for church service, when everything suddenly became blank. I felt some sensations like electric sparks running through my body. It was as if my system had shut down. I shouted when I felt the jolts. I could not move my left leg and I was unable to stand and I was about to fall when my wife quickly came to my assistance.

“I was rushed to a specialist private hospital where I was revived and later referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, for further treatment.”

According to doctors, Adeyeri, an Ondo State indigene, is suffering from a life-threatening disease, called multiple myeloma-cancer of the bone marrow.

The bone marrow is the tissue comprising the centre of large bones. It is the place where new red and white blood cells are produced. It is also the tissue inside the hip and thigh.

His medical report also reveals some damage has occurred to his spinal cord. Consequently, Adeyeri has been unable to walk or sit down since the ugly incident last August.

Doctors however said that Adeyeri’s situation was still redeemable. They said he would have to undergo a spinal surgery and a bone marrow transplant that will cost N2m and N8m respectively.

“I had to travel to India for the spine surgery because I was told if I didn’t do it before the transplant I would become paralysed. It cost us almost N3m. I can now move some parts of my body but my doctors insist that I must go back for the bone marrow transplant because the cancer cells are now spreading through my body and eating the spine again.”

The young forex trader, who said he had no money to continue with the surgery, lamented that he had spent all his personal savings.

According to him, even his family members have exhausted their savings while they are trying to manage his ailment.

Before his ordeal, Adeyeri was an award winning forex trader and trainer as well as a newspaper columnist. His business column has been a source of inspiration for up-and-coming forex traders and has boosted many Nigerians’ confidence in forex transactions.

While pleading for assistance, the young man noted that his alma mater, the Federal Government College, Ido-Ani, relatives, friends all contributed to his first surgery.

But for him to undergo the bone marrow transplant, ailing Adeyeri is calling on the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, corporate organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to come to his aid to raise the funds for the bone marrow transplant.

The father of three said, “I have spent all I have and other saved. My family, relatives and friends both home and abroad have given me all they can. In fact, it is their financial assistance that has kept me till today.

“I am pleading with Nigerians to assist me to raise N10m. I am weak and sick. I cannot work or walk. This explains why I am calling on Governor Segun Mimiko, well-meaning Nigerians and corporate bodies. I need your help; I don’t want to die now.”

How real is the whole forex hoopla then if an award winning trainer, dealer and columnist is financially laid low so easily? This is not kicking a man who is down but trying to save many others from falling for the whole forex dealing scam.

Did you read the part where he said he had exhausted his life savings on treatment? undecided....Forex is no scam... if you know what you're doing you'll be comfortable.. it is not a scam and it is also not a get rich quick scheme. Most people who fail have the "make money now now " mentality.

If after years of trading forex, training people and writing extensively about it he can't afford more than the N3m spent so far even with relatives contributing then forex trading isn't worth the hype. Even farming, check the thread on cucumber, should place one in a better financial position to face life's vicissitudes, if practiced at the level this bros took forex trading to.

Again pls note this doesn't mean I don't sympathize with him or poking fun at his condition. Am just pointing out to those seduced by the forex hype that it really isn't the key to financial freedom.

I understand what you're on about.......if not for his condition, would you label him as a poor man?.... as for financial freedom, it depends on your perspective. If I can afford the basic necessities of life without stress, or doing the usual 9-5 job, am I not financially free?.... apart from unfortunate situations like this that may never arise in most cases ,successful forex traders don't have problem financially.

In the naija context any job that doesn't allow you to spend the odd N10m on illness, even if it is an abortive effort, hasn't given you freedom yet. How many tithe collecting pastors grin for example do you see launching appeals to fund N10m treatment? Or oil workers?

BTW that is why we say we need change in naija. You and I shouldn't be left playing the lottery of life. The bone marrow transplant treatment he is seeking is available at UBTH but the team has appealed many times for govt support in expanding their facilities so they can offer it to the generality of people at modest cost but na lie. If GMB gets there and things don't change we shall again change the govt.

CHANGE UNTIL WE GET GOOD GOVERNANCE!

As long as It's a human that's ruling, things would only get worse, especially in Nigeria.. the sooner you all realize this, the saner you'll become.

Trading forex requires an individual to be alive and well to do it. You can't trade forex when you are sick. On the other hand, if you have been in farming for a long time and have a strong management team in place, you can weather the storms to an extent, provided the management does not run your farming enterprise into the ground.

I think your analysis is flawed. We cannot all be farmers, and we cannot all be forex traders. If an individual has found something legit to make money with, that is good for that person. However, it is good to focus on building a system rather than building a business.
