Leadership Nespaper: December 22nd, 2008

Minister of State for education Hajiya Aishatu Jubril Dukku has owned up that she and her two former colleagues failed woefully in their duty to produce a clear road map for the sector as directed by President Umaru Musa Yar' Adua.

Dukku, who was speaking while welcoming the new minister, Dr. Sam Egwu weekend in Abuja said their inability to give a clear sense of direction on the way forward for the nation's ailing education sector was attributable to faulty schedule of responsibilities among them.

It could be recalled that education ministry got three ministers in 2007, which observers had thought was a determination of the Federal Government to overhaul the system within a short period of time, due to the enormous challenges plaguing the sector.

However, expectations were dashed as the edcuation sector witnessed what many Nigerians had described as the worst period owing to inactivity that spoke volume on the part of the three ministers, who christened themselves the 'three in one.'

Admitting failure, Dukku, who was until now in-charge of basic education said, "I don't know anything about the tertiary. We failed to carry out the President's directive to produce a roadmap for the education sector. We carried on without fulfilling the President's directives. He said we should come up with a policy directive, which we failed to do.”

She charged the senior staff of the ministry to join hands with the new administration to fulfill the mandate, through diligence and dedication to give education what it deserves.

I hope she refunds the salaries paid to her and ban herself from seeking future political position till the next ten years. She had the leeway to resign when it occurred to her that she´s an under-performer. Had she not been weeded out and swapped by yet, another corrupt and complacent Sam Egwu – she would have stayed put till her tenure expires. She should save her crocodile tears forever.

Fact is that, no body however expertise and efficient he/she is, could make progress with such go-slow, corrupt and deceitful regime like Yar´Aduas´. The buck stops at the table of the boss. The failure of Yar´Aduas´ regime is his, for the taking and not any of his underlies.
