The army was the most looked down upon thing a young man could do in the south then. Southerners like Obasanjo joined the Army because they were poor and lacked opportunities, northerners were actively encouraging their best and brightest to join the army instead of going on to university to learn the professions. Buhari, Yaradua, IBB, Murtala Muhammad, Abdusalamai et.c would have been good lawyers, doctors and engineers if they had wanted to. The north planned to dominate the army while we wanted to control civilian professions, which strategy was right or wrong history will prove but you always get what you deserve nothing more.

You've missed the point. Quota system in my previous statement refers to special waivers and favours for Northerners which is still in practice.

The north never had any plan to dominate the military; they just couldn't compete with their southern counterparts in other sectors so they mostly opted for military service.

Ojukwu had a degree from a reputable British university and still joined the Nigeria army.

Major General mohammadu or mohammed BUHARI born in1942 started primary school in1952 and finished secondary school in 1961 joined the army in 1962 and wrote Cambridge in 1961 and was classmate to shehu yaradua who joined the army in 1959.
