Uninterrupted Electricity Impossible In Nigeria Now— Power Minister: Prof. Nebo by Segunod(m): 12:34pm On Feb 10, 2015
Miinister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, says it is impossible to provide constant, uninterrupted electricity to everyone in Nigeria in the near future.

Speaking with newsmen in London over the weekend, the minister said: “Nobody in the world can provide 24/7 electricity everywhere in Nigeria”, adding that 160,000 megawatts would be needed to do that. The current capacity is 4,500 megawatts.
“The cost of providing electricity per megawatt on average is $2billion. To get to where South Africa is, you will need about $3.2trillion (about N672trillion). Where will you find that kind of money?” he asked.

In addition to the huge amount of money involved, Prof. Nebo said power projects also take time to come to fruition, stressing that it takes between four and six years to deliver the power projects.
“You don’t buy these things off the shelves. It takes time to design, study, procure, manufacture, install and commission”, he said, but explained that the government had done so much on generation capacity, transmission and distribution infrastructure, which are key necessities in power supply.

He said 20,000 megawatts was needed to ensure constant power supply to major cities in the country that have been connected to the national grid, but said it would require a lot of resources and time to achieve the feat.

The minister further said the current facilities and infrastructure on the ground had the capacity to provide more than 5,000 megawatts in the country, but lamented that some saboteurs were bent on ensuring that the target is not achieved by vandalising gas pipelines on a regular basis.

He emphasised that the demand for electricity in Nigeria is so huge that “no matter what you do, once electricity gets to a place, people acquire more facilities, buy refrigerators and air-conditioners, and before you know it, what you think is enough for everyone has to be shared by so many people”.

He also said solar power could go a long way in solving Nigeria’s power problems, especially in the rural areas, disclosing that three communities, including Durumi in the suburbs of Abuja, have enjoyed 13 months of uninterrupted electricity since the start of the pilot scheme in December 2013.

Nebo should resign if he cant deliver... Sadly, he is saying the truth.

*Critically analysing the frastructures on ground, there is need for total overhauling of both infrastructures and human resources.

Long life Professor Bartholomew Nnaji the man with integrity. The Minister of Power who left the out-going president cabinet to safe his name and image. PHCN cannot provide Uninterrupted Electricity to Nigerian but they can donate money meant to upgrade their facility to the corrupt leader for his re-election.

Sad but true
But then op, ur footnote has a biased tone. The current opposition in the past were mostly members of the ruling party, irrespective of the party, uninterrupted power supply has been the bane of large scale industrialization in Nigeria.
Any govt that achieves that feat will be fondly remembered by the Nigerian populace.

How about the trillions they have stolen/mismanaged?

I doubt Nigerians really mind that you have not delivered constant power but the fact that we are still generating less than 4,500 megawatts is an insult and a betrayal of the government's promises after all the money thrown at it.

Heck generation should be around 20,000 now. at least.

Nigerians like lies but Nebo is a venerable. He's not a politician and he's not someone who's known to lie to cover his arse.

The truth is that, Nigerians should begin expecting improved power supply next year.

So many power projects are on the pipeline, some of them will be on board from next year to 2017.

Also, economic saboteurs are dragging us back with their vandalism of gas pipelines. There are no personal financial gains to be made from vandalizing gas pipelines, it is only a deliberate attempt to frustrate the efforts of the government towards achieving their power and electricity objectives.

Nigerians don't understand this, all they want is their manna from heaven.

I've always known this fact.

Only a lunatic will promise Nigerians (in all local governments and creeks) stable & uninterrupted power.

It is impossible in Nigeria. Even when you supply all the megawatts and "terrawatts", some Nigerians are ma. d, they'll purposely cut off cables, steal transformer parts, destroy poles, refuse to pay bills, and several other atrocities.

If you vote in any government (FashoRAT, Boko_hari or JonaTAN) thinking he'll provide you constant electricity, then you are a lunatic.

This fact goes beyond monetary factors. Its more of psychology and up-bringing as a nation.

Before we talk about providing electricity and maintenance; first, we need to fix, and reconstruct the brains of all Nigerians, including you reading this.

Quote me wrongly, and get yourself a thunderous slap.

I know one thing for sure GEJ and OBJ are both failures, between 1999 - 2007 OBJ squandered $16 billion in his giagantic power projects that supposedly entered the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest power project any country could ever embark upon. To help you understand how daft all the folks who have ran this country are, I recently bumped into a news on CCTV about Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance Dam, and I then checked it online.

The dam costs the govt. of Ethiopia $4.8 billion and it has an Installed capacity of 6,000 MW, well it's being constructed at a record time of 6 years and it is the biggest hydroelectric project in Africa currently.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Ethiopian_Renaissance_Dam

If one extrapolates this to Nigeria, this project would be estimated to take 20 years and will never be completed. My point is all these past and present rulers are all failures. GEJ is the latest failure and has earned it real good. He had 6 years and should have corrected the power woes of Nigeria. I've critically looked at the power infrastructures we currently have and the privatization drive, we won't have stable power in the next 6 years, my earnest forecast, especially looking at the body language of politicians in Nigerians and how projects are being executed. Someone has to now accumulate the power expenditures under GEJ's 6 years to understand how much of a waste we have endured in this country, they run in billions of dollars.

For a country like Nigeria and all the wealth at its disposal, crude oil sales et al, we deserve a whole lot. It's like a rich friend sending $1 million to another friend in the US to get him an exotic car, his friend ships down a Honda Discussion Continues grin and tells his friend back in Nigeria to bear with him that it is the best he can do with that amount. Just think about it!!

These politicians are all shitheads!! Prof. Nebo is a shithead, dickhead and a crackhead for saying such!
