After an un-desired and lengthy break that the NPC weekly assignment thread suffered due to some prior unforeseen circumstances, the NPC announces it's comeback in a new thread, while the old derailed and abandoned thread has been converted into a comments thread. Thanks

The assignment for this week is to write a story, in poetry for children. The poem could start with 'once upon a time' or 'sometimes ago in a faraway land' or anything that suits best. Please enjoy a magic place where anything can happen.

Please notice that this thread will be open for submissions at 12am on Saturday and closed at 12am on Sunday.
Submissions before or after will not be considered.

Please remember that your submissions will be marked by the following criteria.

1-Organaisation/Structure
2- Featured Poetic Devices
3-Grammatical Accuracy
4-Theme
5-Mood/Imagery

Please keep to the rules. No comments are to be made on this thread apart from assignments submissions. All comments should go
HERE.

Please notice that everyone with a Nairaland account is eligible to submit the assignments.

REGRET'S PATH
Once upon a gloomy day
When dark clouds had their say,
In an empty shed, on a stack of hay
Sat a child who had lost her way.

"Oh dear, what shall I do?
I missed the path where mangoes grew."
Then she hungered anew
But not for a taste of mama's stew

"Oh that I knew where to go.
If I really did know,
I'd get there, fast or slow,
And help papa carry his hoe.

He would pat me on my head,
And pluck me mangoes nearly red,
And tell me stories before bed
Of men once alive, now dead."

But the lightning flashed,
And the thunder crashed,
Then the clouds, shamefully unabashed,
Released droplets it had stashed.

Like her tears, puddles formed freely flowed,
And on them dead leaves rowed.
In the distance, a familiar light glowed,
But her gaze had left the road.

'Don't go alone to papa's farm,
Stay obedient and out of harm'
Mama had said, peeling yam.
Now it sounded, her mind's alarm.

"Aliya!" It called again,
Up she looked, and forgot her pain.
She ran to papa's arms like one insane,
And over his shoulders she watched the rain.

So you see what disobedience could mean,
Comfort or safety tossed in the bin.
But sometimes when we are truly sorry within,
Love would find a way to win.

MOCKERY IN KITCHSYLVANIA

In Momma's kichten
There lived the Pot, the Stove and other utensils
There too was the new Knife and a Catfish

The Pot and the Stove mocked the new Knife
Who said 'I've never done a slice'
Unwisely the Catfish fused
Mocked endlessly at his jagged tooth

Dusk approaches, Momma got home
Voracious - her stomach can't hold
The need to visit -slavia
In a flash she remembered
She failed to fit the Fish in the freezer

Hmm the perfect meal; she thought
Lit the Stove - poured water in the Pot
A fish to cut - there's a knife
This could be his debut slice

The Knife grinned as he sliced through
With his stealth Momma was impressed too
The pain of shame as he felt the jagged tooth
Job done, she ate to full

Kitchsylvania, silent like a grave yard
Well the Fish was sauced in the Pot's palm
"I did my thing - I was bought for that part"
Happy ever after; the Knife had a sharp laugh.

[b]Here are the guidelines for the assignment this week.

Write a sonnet;the first eight lines consisting entirely of things you’d like to say, but never would, to a parent, lover, sibling, child, teacher, roommate, best friend, and the next six lines in which each line is a lie.

TYPES OF SONNETS

I. The Italian (or Petrarchan) Sonnet:

The basic meter of all sonnets in English is iambic pentameter.

The Italian sonnet is divided into two sections by two different groups of rhyming sounds. The first 8 lines is called the octave and rhymes:

a b b a a b b a

The remaining 6 lines is called the sestet and can have either two or three rhyming sounds, arranged in a variety ofways:

c d c d c d
c d d c d c
c d e c d e
c d e c e d
c d c e d c

II. The Spenserian Sonnet:

III. The English (or Shakespearian) Sonnet:

The English sonnet has the simplest and most flexible pattern of all sonnets, consisting of 3 quatrains of alternating rhyme and a couplet:

4 lines- a b a b
4 lines- c d c d

In your presence, on me silence befalls
Deep, deep down in the heart they all reside
In gloom, tranquility it recalls
Over me these feelings do preside
O! How much I long for all of you
Like nuts embedded in Indian almond
I approached, you hooked, just with a glance or two
Euphoria I seek! Eternal in this bond.
Alienated from you I wish to be
Content I am with what you now offer
Forever and always with you frightens me
A test of your love I won't administer
Between us I foresee decades of doom
And these roses of ours never will bloom.

LIFE UNDER

A horror-stricken sneak into my world
A world built on souls and placed down the earth
A world accessed through greed and sinful thirst
A world circumscribed in flames and foul works
A wall for apostates, cave - for souls lost;
Souls who forsook the Master -'death paid debt'
They sought my grants, fame, fortune and less breath
Welcome to hell; where torture is not odd!

But then, I bid you never tread these paths
Let the mirage be; don't chase what are mine
Let the tick-tock of life guide thy blue heart
Slowly but surely, the larva will fly
The dry wind brought upon these trees - cracks
No hope lost, good shine will come from the sky.

Marijuana (White's)

What do I do without you other than get depressed?
Other than loose my cool? Other than act a fool?
Other than smash the objects on which my face reflects?
Should I drown in the pool? Or unleash my tool?

In cold and hot, you make relaxed my soul
Your kisses burn through my five senses
They stay alert, wise I become, like the old
I see farther, clearer than lenses

But I will let you go, and forever be insane
Teach the kids how to abuse your gifts
Go to any length, to get you replaced
So whenever I ball, we won't see you in our midst

Oh there Mary, I promise to leave you heartbroken
Soon in my life, you would be out spoken

Nature gave me a hug, a gift of time,
longlasting peck,causing flames between loins,
Sharp teeths and fangs, crushing hearts like lime,
A game of fun, without a shard of toil.

It all started when the full moon came,
A pack of wolves, seen across the plain.
Distinct colour, but clearly smell the same
a bite on my neck, deep into my jugular vein.

20th of a certain month... i saw a girl,
right there in the bubbling sun, a small thing to bear,
approaching her,she shines like pearl,
smile on my face, carefully burying my fear.

I introduced my self, joked a bit...and asked of her number,
she smiled and said "Guy", wake up from your slumber.

THE VANTAGE POINT

If tired of trees I seek again mankind,
Well I know where to hie me in the dawn,
To a slope where the cattle keep the lawn.
There amid lolling juniper reclined,
Myself unseen, I see in white defined
Far off the homes of men, and farther still
The graves of men on an opposing hill,
Living or dead, whichever are to mind.

And if by noon I have too much of these,
I have but to turn on my arm, and lo,
The sunburned hillside sets my face aglow,
My breathing shakes the bluet like a breeze,
I smell the earth, I smell the bruised plant,
I look into the crater of the ant.
