YEsterday at CES 2009 (shame on any of you who don't know what that is) Palm announced their next gen OS, running on their new mobile flagship phone.
So far all i've seen is really impressive.

But don't take my word for it. Check it out in the link above

Initial impression from Engadget

1. Really sleek user Interface, as revolutionary or even more so than the iPhone's
2. web browser faster at rendering, displaying and scrolling through pages than any of its competitors, including Mobile Safari

"We're told that the OS is based on Linux, and is in some way an extension of what they've been crafting for a while now, but on top of that Linux core is a display layer that is basically WebKit"

hmmm. they've all seen the light.

"The device features copy and paste, which is implemented by holding a thumb on the gesture area and grabbing the text you want with your other thumb or a finger -- there's also a dropdown menu that lets your move through a number of editing options."

wow. exactly as i suggested that the iphone copy-n-paste feature should be implemented while chatting on the #iphone IRC.

logica:

"We're told that the OS is based on Linux, and is in some way an extension of what they've been crafting for a while now, but on top of that Linux core is a display layer that is basically WebKit"

and therein lies its undoing.

seriously, webkit?

on a UI?

so just a web browser for an interface, then.

goodluck THAT turning into a serious dev platform. WebOS is fine and good for a flash UI but crafting 3D games and killer apps using just Cascade Style Sheets, HTML,  javascript (ooh, messy!) and Flash has got to be the one way not to design an iphone clone. One would think the spectacular failure of WebApps was enough of a lesson (even though on the palm apps will be local, not server-side).

still    undecided

Yeah, they confirmed that 3D gaming will not be possible on this current version of the OS. And to think the device has a PowerVR SGX chip, fully openGL 2.0 compliant. this, coupled with a 600 - 1000 Mhz ARM CPU means this should blow the PSP out of the water in terms of 3D rendering.

All the same, i'm glad this came out. I think apple has gotten too complacent with the iPhone firmware upgrades. Was almost certain of a new firmware in Macworld.

Logica, those your guys working on the bluetooth file exchange service neva deliver o!

@pete that sucks opengl2.0 is a must have for handhelds.who knows they might rev up thier sdk and include 3d.i use to consider palm as a trashy os.but this is something else.any word on nokia opengl 2.0 phones.

when i first saw this in my feedreader, i was like WebOS WTF?! I thot the OS was supposed to be Nova or something. They've been working on that too for sometime now and its based on linux as well.

But an operating system where applications will be written in HTML/CSS/JS doesnt sound amusing to me. sure, the UI is cool and all that. . but trust me, "killer" apps will most likely be limited to those in the productivity category and those that rely on web services (e.g. Facebook / Box.net / Pandora clients). The OS is part of the reason why there's no memory card slot, not because it has 8GB onboard. The CEO stated that it woulnt go inline with the WebOS standards or somethn. undecided

Overall, good phone on the surface. They are probably trying to change what people should focus on in smartphones. Lets see how it goes.
