Hi Guys, I just need to know about fitness centres/gyms in Nigeria. How popular are they with people over there? How often do people in Nigeria go to a gym if they are registered in one ? What is the distribution and population of gyms in a certain area. How popular is the fitness culture in Nigeria ?
I know it's not popular among African women which is why I have a business proposal to target fitness centers to Unfit african women who tend to be more overweight/obese.

This is for an assignment if anyone knows pls help

Re: Gyms In Nigeria ? by mmsen: 9:55pm On Mar 11, 2015
There are some but they tend to be frequented by what I call 'meat-heads' i.e. guys who go to get 'big' and not necessarily healthy.

I didn't observe any women in the gyms that I went to outside of the hotels.

I imagine that a gym that catered exclusively to women could work very well in cosmopolitan cities like Abuja or Lagos.

There is a huge need for more gyms and fitness centers and the most of the ones I've seen are expensive and poorly equipped. They also don't tend to target women much, too many benches and not enough treadmills.

I'm not sure how profitable it'll be as a business though. Gym equipment is expensive plus you'll need a pretty large premises so you might end up having to charge more than most can afford.

You have different approaches which you can take. There is the option of setting up a gym which I wouldn't recommend and then there is the option of running something based outdoor in a park of some sort (depending on what location you have in mind there a few options)

There are gyms in Nigeria, in fact there are many. The highest concentration tend to be located in hotels in Lagos and Abuja, but you also have gyms like Lotus in VI (standard monthly fee 29500 naira).

I am not sure what your overall objective would be, but I guess the immediate one would be to make profit (it stands to reason). I am only giving my two kobos worth but the main challenges you would face is that for the existing gyms I am aware of, they charge in the region of 20,000 naira a month in order to stay afloat. This is to overcompensate for the lack of gymgoers as the gym fees are out of reach for the vast majority of Nigerians.

Targeting unfit women is possibly precarious business, as many of these women are like to be mothers and/or without disposable income and it is not advisable to pursue a niche segment of an untapped gyming market.

I wish you well however, and the only type of business model I could suggest would be a female boot camp out in the open and charging affordable fees- say if you aim for 30 women and 1-2k each. If this is something you can sustain twice a week and perhaps make a small investment in a few exercise mats or exercise props to recreate the feel of a gym, you could possibly generate between 240-480k per month.

It's not bad money and at least if you experienced fluctuating demand or your customers stopped attending for one reason or another, you would have a quick and pain free exit strategy, especially if you compare this to the cost of having to potentially forfeit rent on premises and sell of gym equipment if things didn't work out.

One way of targeting your market with eye-catching leaflets (depending on location) would be to patronise the Shopright in Lekki, some of the small shopping centres and generally areas where you will find a high footfall of women. You could even cut a deal to have leaflets handed out at takeaways and other eateries.

I hope this has helped. smiley

Thanks..I want to develop this project because obesity in African women is increasing and getting out of hand. They live an unhealthy lifestyle and I want to create a safe place for these women to work out as a poster above said the gyms are frequentled by men who want to body build and this can be discouraging for women. A gym for them is to encourage them to live a more healthier lifestyle with physical activity. Oh by the way, this trend is seen in the middle class Nigerian women residing in urban areas so a gym will be for those who can afford it.

Im not trying to be rude or anything but i think people might not be willing to trust you with their money for results if you wear torn tops and you do not have a proportional shape. Thats why you find that most male trainers are usually muscular not anorexic and disproportional. Same applies to female trainers. You need to have a body shape your clients will envy but long to have.

Its also important to look the part, you need to present yourself like someone who can actually afford opening up a gym.

People are motivated by what they say, unless you are willing to get a more curvy woman as a trainer it could be of great benefit to prospective clients. Preferably someone who looks like this.

Obesity in African women! Really Last I checked, the average African women is always so concerned about her weights and look more than anything else.

It's a bit obvious you don't reside in Nigeria. Anyway...

people work out a lot in Nigeria more than anywhere else in the world I think, there are a lot of gyms in major Nigerian cities...I have two on my street alone.

And of course, we don't joke with our early morning jogging!!

Keeping fit is a new way of life.

You could channel your assignment towards how to enlighten people in rural communities on the benefits of exercise and healthy living.

Hi,
From my research gyms are popular in hotels in the cities like Abuja and lagos. There is a small fitness culture going on. Ppl in rural areas tend to be more fit than those in the cities because processed food is less popular and affordable for them.

Lol to conclude running a gym is expensive, most gyms tend to rent their equipment. E no easy tongue

this is actually a good initiative, however, African women orientation of gym is totally different (where guys visit to enhance their muscle and look more appealing to ladies). But, i believe this would bring chances and reorientation of such perception.
Re: Gyms In Nigeria ? by Glassydude: 8:07pm On Apr 09, 2017
I don't think this applies to your average Nigerian woman. Having too concentrated gyms (two gyms on a street) gives rise to sub-standard gyms. Gym owners trying to cut costs to keep up with competition which is just down the road. I think the problem with Nigerian gyms is their
standard (Quality not quantity)
