These are desperate times for many Nigerian politicians! Some are willing to do whatever it takes to win an election or retain their position. We have seen politicians that have hired assasins against their opponents. We have equally seen the use of godfathers and thugs. Not to be forgotten are politicians that have been made to swear oaths. The case of TA Orji at Okija and Gbenga Daniel at an oracle is still fresh in our minds.

We thank God that the Adedibus and the Oloyes of Nigerian politics are making way for saner politicking. But then the desperation remains. otherwise, what do we call the attempt by some political parties to prevent the election from taking place, even when billions have been wasted on the preparations and campaigns? Why the sudden attack and villification of INEC and Prof Jega? Why the attempt by some powerful political interests to change the already agreed procedure at the 9th hour? Why are some political interests trying to use unknown entities such as the YDP (Young Dem. Party) to truncate the political process? Why are we hearing of interim government when an election is about to be conducted?

In most democracies, running for office is essentially for service and fame, not for the money. They do not run a do-or-die race out there, even in other African countries. When will our politicians learn this lesson?

Instead of going to graveyards, groves, shrines and churches to seek for power, can our politicians learn first the meaning of democracy - government of the people by the people for the people!
