You can leave the suckers so you get a nice group of plantain plants. But sometimes you want a new plant to be planted somewhere else in the garden or as a precaution to overwinter in a frost free place, even if it is a hardy species.

Increase food production – Crop protection technologies allow Nigerians producers to increase crop yields and efficiency of food production processes. Up to 40 percent of the world's potential crop production is already lost annually because of the effects of weeds, pests and diseases. These crop losses would be doubled if existing pesticide uses were abandoned.
Decrease the cost of food – Because the use of pesticides improves crop yields, crop protection technologies also impact the cost of food. Without crop protection chemicals, food production would decline, many fruits and vegetables would be in short supply and prices would rise. Helping to keep food prices in check for the consumer is another large benefit of pesticides.

Plantains are vegetatively propagated, most often from suckers (shoots that grow from a bud at the base of the plant) or from corms (underground bulbs known as rhizomes). The use of whole corms is very laborious so it is more common to grow from small pieces of corm. There are three different types of banana suckers which are produced by the mother plant; maidenheads, sword suckers and water suckers. Maidenheads have a large pseudostem which does not produce fruit. Sword suckers have a narrow base, short pseudostem and narrow, blade-like leaves. They produce healthy, fruitful pseudostems when they mature Water suckers have short pseudostems and broad leaves. Water suckers are not strongly attached to the rhizome and generally produce weaker plants and less fruit. Maidenheads and large sword suckers are preferred over water suckers.

Disease Control
Control of the two main plantain diseases, yellow sigatoka and black sigatoka, is indispensable. Good control has been obtained by monthly trimming of dead or broken green leaves hanging from the pseudostem and all leaves with necrotic spots covering more than one- third of the lamina. High population plantations have a lower incidence of these two diseases. This could be related to the increase in the length of the pathogen growth cycle induced by the modifications in light and temperature inside high-density plantations.

Crop protection technology -- which includes all pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, as well as biotechnology products --helps control the thousands of weed species, harmful insects and numerous plant diseases that afflict crops.

Without these important crop protection and pest control technologies, U.S. food production would decline, many fruits and vegetables would be in short supply, and the price of food would rise. What’s more, America’s production of important fibers for clothing, such as cotton, would decrease as farmers would lose their harvests and livelihoods to crop pests and diseases.

Practical aspect of planting Musa Plantain suckers cost and requires a lot of attention…..but advisable you dig the ground like 9inches to 10inch deep apply manure before placing the sucker Undernet and cover it with the sand dog from it before and make sure you didn’t cover it with sand up to the default level to enable water absorption rest at the top uncovered level part. Make sure you did not weed with chemical (weedicide) when the plantains are still young (3-4 Months) it’s strongly advisable you use man power labor to weed. Fertilizer can be apply from 4 to 5 month after planting

Planting
The desired pieces of the plant are usually planted 30–60 cm (11.8–23.6 in) deep in the soil and should generally be planted at the end of the dry season or the beginning of the wet season. Plant spacing is dependent on the cultivar being planted. Frequent weeding is required until plants are tall enough to shade out competing plants and should be started about 6 weeks after planting. Plantains are fast growing and require the frequent addition of nutrients as well as additional irrigation in the dry season. Plantain is often grown alongside other crop plants with similar requirements, indeed, the young banana plants make excellent 'nurses' for other crops such as papaya or cocoa which can be grown very close to the young plantains.

Break down Benedict of One Hectre of plantain Farming
Plantain planted is 2175 pieces ,you divides 2175÷12=
We all understand that 12 is a dozen and its quite so sure that 12 is a dozen.
Market woman or buyers always buy in dozen which a dozen is 12 bunches of plantain.
Now !! Let us do that arithmetic together to our best know ledge and understanding.
Farmer sell's one dozens for for the lowest rate @ N12000..Please note all the figures where its belong....
Plantain sold @=N12000
A Dozen is =12
We planted 2175 plantain....
Let's now calculate all....
,..................................CALCULATION.....................
2175÷12=183 dozen of plantain realises now multiply by 12000 equal to N2,196,000 is you first income and note that its get multiplied after first harvest ....You planting this in first year get tripled the following year due to sucker germination by the side...for detail kindly visit us on our above address or www.Facebook.com/sedulusplantainfarming.

In the overwhelming majority of cases tilling is done by hand. A hoe with a large blade is the universal tool for tilling. So far, only in some areas are ox-drawn ploughs used. But there are plans to extend this method of tilling to other parts of the country where the slopes are gentle. Deep ploughing as done in Europe would be disastrous in tropical conditions since it would aggravate soil erosion.

There are several traditional methods of tilling. The simplest one, practiced on fertile, well drained soil, is the simple scratching of the surface with a cutlass, planting maize seeds and covering them at once with soil. Tilling and planting are done at the same time. According to the slope of the land, the farmers often make mounds or ridges when tilling. These ridges, mounds or beds often contain grass and the remains of the previous crops as manure. Initially, ridges were made down the slope of a hill. In this way, work was easier for the women who worked moving uphill. Contour ridging means a much more uncomfortable working position, the more so the steeper the slope. The downward sloping ridges make erosion worse.

Vegetative growth Neither soil amendments, fertilizer applications methods nor fertilizer compositions had a significant effect on pseudostem height or girth, or on leaf area at flowering (Table 4). Treatment effects were only significant for the number of leaves at flowering between Saline-Ring-NPK plants (8.2 leaves/plant) and Amended-Mixed-NPK and Amended-Ring-NPK+micro plants (14.0 and 13.8 leaves/plant, respectively). Replacing the saline field soil in the root zone with non-saline soil improved the growth of ‘Malindi’ plants compared to those planted in saline soil. However, replacement soil plants did not reach the average size of ‘Malindi’ plants grown under optimum conditions in Oman (psedoustem height, 180 cm; MAF, 1995). grin

Weed Control Strategy Weed control is nearly always designed to prevent or suppress a weed infestation. Eradication usually is attempted only in regulatory weed programs and in relatively small, confined areas, such as greenhouses or plant beds. To control weeds that are growing among or close to desirable plants, you must take advantage of the differences between the weeds and the desired species. Be sure that the plants you are trying to protect are not susceptible to the weed control method you choose. Generally, the more similar the desirable plant and the weed species are to one another, the more difficult weed control becomes. For example, broadleaf weeds are usually more difficult to control in broadleaf crops, and grass weeds are often difficult to control in grass crops. A plan to control weeds may include: biological control, cultural control, sanitation, and chemical control.

BENEFITS AND INCOME OF ONE ACRE OF PLANTAIN FARM
In one acre of land ,you will need 750 suckers planted with the spacing of 3by3 meter and in between the meter left can still contain other crops like peaniple, or other crop but make so sure that ,the crop do not hinders...
The income for one acre of plantain is calculated by 750 divided 12 which is 62.2 let say 64 multiply by N8,000 equal to N512,000.00 is your initial income
This is the brake down in one acre.
Sucker planted is 750
Market women buy in dozen which is 12 is one dozen
750÷12=62.2
That is 62.2 dozen is what one acre produced
And market women do buy one dozen for N8,000
Now multiply 62.2 dozen with N8000 =512,000.00 is ur initial income for one acre
Thank sir Clifford for Sedulus Plantain Farming

Applying insecticides Thorough knowledge of the target pest helps determine what chemicals to use and how often to apply them. One well-timed application of an effective pesticide may provide the desired control. Sometimes repeated applications will be necessary as the infestation continues and pesticide residues break down. The pesticide label, Extension Service recommendations, and other sources, such as pesticide dealers, usually indicate a range of treatment intervals and dosages. By carefully observing the pest problem and applying chemicals when the pests are most vulnerable, you often will be able to use lower doses of pesticides and apply them less often. Over a long growing period, this can mean considerable savings in time, money, and total pesticides applied.

The soil texture triangle gives names associated with various combinations of sand, silt and clay. A coarse-textured or sandy soil is one comprised primarily of sand-sized particles. A fine-textured or clayey soil is one dominated by tiny clay particles. Due to the strong physical properties of clay, a soil with only 20% clay particles behaves as sticky, gummy clayey soil . The term loam refers to a soil with a combination of sand, silt, and clay sized particles. For example, a soil with 30% clay, 50% sand, and 20% silt is called a sandy clay loam.

We will continue to help coordinate a cooperative for the community to grow and dry fruit in rural Nigeria. We have an exporter and our vision is to take a product that farmers are already growing – and simply increase its value by bringing it to consumers who care about what they eat, and from where it comes. This enables farmers, including Buppala school, direct to the community. The community then has the opportunity to invest in their own local infrastructure, education and other endeavours as they see fit.

Plantain production in Nigeria is still very much in the hands of small scale farmers who incorporate it into different farming systems. The effort of these farmers should be collaborated with a good and adequate social infrastructure, like better roads and transport and efficient extension services. Future research on plantains should address the issue of intensive cropping and nutrient and water requirements to increase productivity both on-station and on-farm with farmers’ participation. This will assist in meeting the ever increasing demand of this crop by both household consumers and the new small scale industries. With the recent interest in establishment of plantain farms, as evident by the increase in cultivation/harvested areas, the country’s productivity will be tripled in the next few years. It is believed that the country will for a long time be one of the highest producers of plantain around the world. grin
Re: #Treated Dwarf Cameroonian Hybrid Plantain & Banana Suckers 4 Sale @ Chip Prices by sedulus(m): 6:21pm On Aug 08, 2015
Plantain (Musa spp.) occupies a strategic position for rapid food production in Nigeria. It is ranked third among starchy staples. The country’s output doubled in the last 20 years. Production, which is concentrated in the Southern part of the country, still remains largely in the hands of small scale farmers who, over the years, have ingeniously integrated it into various cropping systems. Production is male dominated, while women essentially handle marketing. The inadequate knowledge of improved cultural practices of the crop by the farmers, an inefficient system of extension services and skewness of specialization in areas of research are part of the reasons why yield potential of plantain is still low in the country. Contributions of plantain to the income of rural households in major producing areas in Nigeria continue to increase tremendously in the last few years. Unlike some other starchy staples whose demand tend to fall with rising income, demand for plantain increases with increasing income. With the potential for industrial processing of plantain, which has recently been adopted, and the increased interest in production by small and large scale farms in the country, it is believed that Nigeria will continue to be one of the world’s largest producers of plantain.
