Nigerian players of all sports, both at home and abroad.  Nigerian boxers, coaches, players, basketballers, polo players, table tennis professionals.  Nigerian leagues in all sports.  Let's re-make the sports forum so that 90% of the posts will be about Nigerian topics.  How about that?  Moderators, whsat do you think?  Noble sports brethren?  Is there life beyond the premier league?
Re: Let's Nigerianize The Nairaland Sports Section by FBS: 3:52pm On Jan 16, 2009
certainly there is life beyond and outside the EPL but the Nigerian league does not generate much interest besides, even to get info about the clubs na wahala. same goes for all other forms of sport. Coverage and adverts is almost non existent.
Re: Let's Nigerianize The Nairaland Sports Section by vicade(m): 3:53pm On Jan 16, 2009
So we should be discussing shooting stars and Eyimba over United and Arsenal or what? Or better still Bash Ali? Your idea is good on paper but we do not live in a world of paper and i personally think there is nothing to discuss about Nigerian sport so i dont see how this Nigerianizng stuff will work. Even if super eagles is playing and Arsenal  is playing at the same time , i will rather catch the Arsenal Match live and get the super eagles result from the back page of a news paper.

But i may wrong, Just giving my honest opinion

@Seun

Fact still remains that there is absolutely nothing attractive about Nigerian sports. With the exception of the Super Eagles (which consists majorly of players doing their thing in foreign leagues), I have no interest in any other sports club/team because all you see is corruption, lack of interest by the government in the athletes, and a depressing lack of quality.
If I'm to spend hours of my important time watching a sports game, it has definitely gotta be worth it, and sad but true, Naija doesn't offer that.

Why else do you think ALL of our soccer stars are playing abroad?? Even our talented athletes are changing nationalities to play their sports abroad. Is that my fault or the government's?
Unwillingness to spend money on world class equipments to effectively train our athletes and poor treatment of these athletes when they surprisingly do well is killing Nigerian sports.
Why else do Nigerian stations go to extreme lengths to bring these foreign games to us?

Let the government and sports people give us something tangible to watch, to cheer about and to talk about and we will.  .  .till then I see no reason why I should be made to suffer on Nairaland for their lapses by not being able to discuss what I prefer and love to watch (the foreign leagues)here.
If there is something to discuss, we will. For now with respect to Nigerian sports, THERE IS NOTHING.

Of course the place will buzz for the first week, but after that when you hear the same old sorry story over and over again with zero excitement and zero quality, Nairaland Sports will simply kill itself off.

I believe in quality over quantity.  .  .I would rather be in a place with 40% traffic where I'm discussing top quality games than be in a place with 98% traffic where rubbish is being analyzed. And, quality takes the prize any day.
Re: Let's Nigerianize The Nairaland Sports Section by debosky(m): 6:00pm On Jan 16, 2009
Without a major tournament like the Nations Cup or Olympics, the average Nigerian is not even aware of what is going on in 'Nigerian Sports'.

Even local newspapers have little to report on 'Nigerian Sports' so what is this 'Nigerianization' about?

As far as Nigerianizing is concerned, the sports forum is Nigerian enough - we have uniquely Nigerian names such as 'scumtwats' (by my humble self  grin) for Man Utd and Gaynners (by Sharon  angry) for Arsenal.  tongue grin grin

People discuss a lot more than the premier league here - American Football, Tennis and other sports get discussed, and these discussions are not in a vacuum, but are based on the real-world interests of the posters.

If you can import people in love with local boxing, gidigbo (local wrestling) and the like to come and discuss it then such an idea will flourish. In the absence of that, you might as well say

'Nigerians leave your VWs, Hondas, Mercedes, Toyotas and Fords and come and drive Nigerian cars, omolankes (push carts) and keke napeps  grin grin. Is there life beyond A/C and alloy wheels?  grin'

So how is Osawemwem doing at Abiola Babes? I learnt he is moving to Muwonleru FC for a $250million record signing. And Oluaye has just won the FIFA world player of the year. What a great news for Ihiala United.

That' why we should do the little we can to promote it, so that it will be like the EPL. If we keep talking like this then we'll remain stagnant.

See me see wahala o. Again, is it our fault that Nigerian sports are as shitty as they are? And in the name of all that is green, how will our analyzing the shit make the smell any better?
How many members of the NFA are on NL? How many ministers in Yaradua's cabinet are on NL? Or you think edoyad is John Odey in disguise? Please get real.
Our opinions here, as well thought out as they are, are just a few among many. Do you think we are the first to complain about Nigerian sports being terrible? Those that have complained before us, those that were even better placed in the government hierarchy, what results have they achieved? So because we type our views here it means Dora Akunyili will speedily come read then go inform Yar'adua on what Nairalanders are saying, who in turn will instantly go produce world class soccer stars from Jigawa state and spend 4 billion naira on proper sport equipment.  .  .perhaps even build state of d' art individual training complexes for each Nigerian soccer club while he is at it.
This country has got a lot more on her plate to worry about than proper sports development at the moment, so for the next few years our sports level will remain right where it currently is.

The powers that be will always do what they want to.  .  .na today? Analyzing how badly the shit smells will not make them instantly hire a sanitary crew.  .  .instead they will only go get cheap air freshener in little quantity.
When you keep analyzing the same rubbish week after week I hope you'll feel very pleased and satisfied with yourself. If you want to help the situ, write to those that run things and make 'em do something positive, not stopping me and other class lovers like me from discussing quality that pleases us on the Sport section of Nairaland.

IMO, the foreign sports and the few quality Nigerian games that come up can peacefully co-exist on this board. Where's the fight? Haba.

"The Nairaland Forum is the biggest Nigerian website on the Internet. Welcome!"

This topic continues on radio, tv, newspaper et al.

The site can act as an agent of change as long as there is up-to-date information always avalaible for sport analysis.

I wouldn't know about other sports, but most NFL teams make efforts these days to have their database online.

Maybe with the Privatization (abi na IPO offer them call am) of Sports by the NSC, commercialisation and disemmination of information will be a "spur".

Moderators for this section would have to source for reliable news item.

Goodluck.

It wont work. When nigerian newspapers even have "sports from abroad" sections 100 times larger than the local sports sections.

Does anyone remember a nigerian boxer apart from Dick tiger and Bash Ali?

YESSSSSOOOOOO . . . .SEUN PLS IT'S A GOOD IDEA
ME, I'M AN ARDENT FOLLOWER OF NIGERIAN FOOTBALL. I FOLLOW THE PERFORMANCE OF NIGERIAN PLAYERS ABROAD, ARDENTLY SUPPORT/FOLLOW SUPER EAGLES AND OUR JUNIOR NATIONAL TEAMS, BUT UNFORTUNATELY THERE ARE NO THREADS HERE WHERE SUCH ARE DISCUSSED. IF YOU START ONE, IT WILL DIE B4 2 DAYS. I HAVE STARTED MANY THREADS ON NIGERIAN PLAYERS/SUPER EAGLES BUT ONLY ''HAS NIGERIA EVER PRODUCED A WORLD CLASS PLAYER?'' SURVIVES TILL 5 PAGES.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN A SET OF PEOPLE AS NIGERIANS. WE HARDLY DISCUSS OUR PLAYERS/TEAMS. ALL YOU SEE IS ARSENAL,CHELSEA,BARCA ETC. I SUPPORT ARSENAL, BUT I HAVE NEVER OPENED THAT LONG THREAD ON IT.

IRONICALLY, IF U GO O GHANAWEB, A GHANAIAN FORUM, YOU GET FRESH, LIVELY DISCUSSIONS ON NIGERIA, NIGERIAN PLAYERS, NIGERIAN TEAMS ETC. THERE ARE MORE THAN 20 LIVELY THREADS ON MIKEL OBI ALONE IN THAT SITE. THERE ARE THREADS ON NSOFOR, YAKUBU, OGBUKE, ETC IN GW. IN FACT THOSE GHANAIANS SEEM TO KNOW NIGERIAN FOOTBALL MORE THAN MANY OF US HERE. IMAGINE THEM FREELY QUOTING NIGERIA'S MATCHES OF 1950'S.

ANYWAY, GW IS WHERE I GO TO READ 'NIGERIANIZED FOOTBALL' EVERY MORNING. http://discussions.ghanaweb.com/viewforum.php?f=2&sid=984d9837c0ca7b35ad3800c8efd91412

SEUN, BUT I DONT SEE THIS THING WORKING, MANY FORUMERS HERE ARE JUST NOT INTERESTED IN DISCUSSING NIGERIAN FOOTBALL, EPL IS THE DEAL. SO IF YOU OPEN THREADS ON NIGERIAN FOOTBALL, DON'T BE SURPRISED THAT YOU WILL BE THE OTHER POSTER, OR MAYBE YOU CAN SEE 3 PEOPLE BEFORE YOU FIND THE THREAD IN PAGE 3 THE NEXT DAY.

I'm sorry for posting in block letter. Okamilara ni!
Re: Let's Nigerianize The Nairaland Sports Section by debosky(m): 9:08pm On Jan 16, 2009
Mr 'ghanaweb this' and 'ghanaweb that' do more to create that kind of atmosphere here.

No one forced those guys to create those threads, it happened out of interest not compulsion.

Find other like minded members as yourself and build it up.

I remember the people who started the Arsenal thread were not up to 10, and this was almost three years ago now and it is still growing. What you need is passion and consistency.

DayoKanu is the only Bayern Munich supporter in Sports, but EVERYONE knows he supports Bayern wholeheartedly. If you feel you are 'too good' to come into the threads where sports people discuss and let us in on your 'Naija mania', then how would it grow? Passion - show passion for naija on nairaland and stop running to ghanaweb and maybe there'll be some difference.

Mr Debo,
No be fight.
Re: Let's Nigerianize The Nairaland Sports Section by Cristalz(f): 9:51pm On Jan 16, 2009
@Jarus

Debo's speaking the plain unvarnished truth. I started a thread on Obafemi undergoing a hernia surgery some weeks ago.  .  .I never saw you post on it. Yet you're so eager to announce that threads on Nigerian footballers are quick to die.  Hate to spell it out this way, but that's just being hypocritical.

Also, I noted that your post mentioned only Nigerian players in FOREIGN LEAGUES, as well as the Super Eagles and the Junior national team. Honestly is there anybody that doesn't follow those here? We all keep ourselves updated with the Eagles whenever they play. Same goes for the junior team. As for the Nigerian players in foreign leagues, heck, go check. There are a number of threads on such players if you would only check.

I even thought you were gon' mention clubs like Kano Pillars and Owerri FC in that bold write-up of yours, yet all you did was mention the Super Eagles (consisting of players mostly based in foreign leagues like I mentioned earlier), the junior team and players in the EPL. Aren't those the ones we all follow here?

Also Seun isn't referring to just soccer. I didn't see you talk about any other Nigerian sport besides soccer. Which goes to show your ''interest'' in Nigerian sports ain't so deep after all.

If you prefer Ghanaweb then darn well stick to Ghanaweb. I doubt you run to them there about Nairaland with as much zeal as you promote them here. Ask yourself if that is being a proactive patriot in the first place. Jeez.

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission has accused the Secretary General of NFA for corrupt management practises
and has threatened to report them to EFCC and disband the board.

Reports say that the camping of the Flying Eagles for next year's WYC has been postponed
due to inadequate funds. Meanwhile the budget for the hosting of next year's WYC has been a subject of intebse speculation
after it was revealed that the LOC inflated figures.

Another Nigerian Athlete has Nationalise to compete with Somalia shocked shocked
He cited corruption, unhealthy competition and nepotism as his reasons for decamping
He recognised the Somalian Sports Federation as better orgaanised than Nigeria's shocked shocked tongue
"Players are well taken care of and no issues about funds and all that".

Meanwhile, Joseph Yobohas threatened to boycott the next Super Eagles Worldcup qualifying camp.
He said unrefunded air tickets and bitter rancour amongst officials as his reasons for standing out.

LIke Criz said, i saw the topic on Martins and NO ONE posted in it.https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-216067.0.html

Thats not the only one. lots of threads on Nigerian players by posters here get forgotten after few or no replies.
i can pick out lots of threads like that.

Ghanaweb is Ghanaweb, Nairaland is Nairaland.

When i do Threads for Nations cup/U17 i had to be posting in it daily to keep it going.

If you want to do a thread on Nigerian players and Nigerian league you can, only thing is you have to make it interesting, you have to update it or else it will die

Re: Let's Nigerianize The Nairaland Sports Section by justkunmi(m): 10:42am On Jan 17, 2009
"Nigerianize"? thats almost impossible.

My 5 year old cousin is already a United fan. .(yeah. .I had a hand in it). grin wink

He asked me today if Rooney would play and I said, no. Tevez would. .and he started sulking.!. cos the dude loves Rooney!!. .

Point is, the EPL, even above the La Liga and the Serie A has made its league very attractive and almost evreyone is watching.
Other leagues are even taking notes of how the English people did it. . not to talk of the Nigerian League.

For now, the best yarns we can have about Nigerian sports is when the Super Eagles are playing. Either qualifiers or tournaments. Cos even friendly matches are not even on the radar anymore.
The Nigerian league like everyone else has said, is not yarn worthy. .

Imagine guys coming in everyday to discuss Kwara United and Heartland FC when they dont even know the names of the players!. .
or the highest goal scorer in the league for that matter. .
Re: Let's Nigerianize The Nairaland Sports Section by Nobody: 12:23pm On Jan 17, 2009
Debosky, Cristalz, Mukina et al,
Thanks for calling me to order. No offence intended really, even though I knew that comment would stir a barrage of criticisms, especially from my dear Mukina, who had somewhere in the past e-scolded me for my quick reference to GW every where. Well, I'm not in any way promoting GW( a forum that has denied me registration for over 3 months now), but I can't restrian myself from making it as a reference anywhere the need arises, just as I quote NL too virtually everyday in my real life discussions with colleagues, friends and as well at home, such that I'm now called Mr. Nairalander. So no taking anything away from NL. Mio koyan NL kere rara(Mukina, hope u know the meaning grin)

And thanks too for calling my attention to the fact that even my acclaimed following of Nigerian football is only limited to our foreign players. Make I no lie,I tune on anytime I tune to Supersport and they are showing Nigerian league.

So we are all guilty of it really.

I'm aware that many of the frontline NL sports analysts know much about Nigerian football and league (especially of the 80s thru early 90s, when Nigerian league used to be interesting), but they don't just like to discuss it, except as a digression. I can't recall the thread where Dayokanu,Akolawole(or is Dr. Kit?) and co digressed to talking about Shooting stars, Abiola babes, Leventis, Nigeria FA cup of the 80s, 90s, as well as Eagles players/matches in 86, 88, 90,92,94 ANCs. I was surprised with the precision those guys were mentioning names of players I rarely heard.

So I'm not in anyway downplaying the knowledge of NL analysts about football going-ons in Naija, only that you guys hardly talk about it, and since that's my own 'area of interest' GW serves me better in this respect!!!
