OMA4U:
The most striking feature of this poem is how the rhymes infuse FLOW and RHYTHM.

Wow!The first time I'd read boss's poem and understand it at once.

Hehehehehe. Thats what makes it a poem. It is meant to evoke the thought of the reader.

laykorn:

Walahi talahi! Na first time wey I go read once too be this......

So, The P0rnst*r Portrait wasn't comprehensible at first reading too? grin

NINE LIVES

One life
I live for my family.
That the blood glues all -
Its a bond that has no enemy.

One life
I live for naivety.
I take responsibility for my unknown
Deeds alone.

One life
I live for joy.
That it takes a thimbleful of tears
To wash up a face clean for cheers.

One life
I live for love.
That life's true meaning is what really
Maddens one to the grave early.

One life
I live for you.
My loyalty could have been bruised
By my love for awed choices but i stayed true.

One life
I live for my mistakes.
That each time I fail and cry,
I always get better after another try.

One life
I live for hope.
For as long as breathe still travels
Through the nostrils why should I mope?

One life
I live for memories.
That a sing-song is made
Of my actions; a feat for jamborees.

And above all,

One life
I lived for life,
That after my deeds on earth
I was proud to have a date with death.

Heheheheheheh. What did I miss? grin

Well, that's just a rough poem... the main one is somewhere in a sheet of paper.
I couldn't remember all what I wrote so I just put up the lives without much explanation (I will edit it when I see the paper.

Someone accused me of bn non-religious just cuz I skipped the "God" part..... i.e. "one life... I live for God"... the critique was so funny eh.

So tell me, which did I miss that made me unpatriotic?

I think the part where I said "I live for you" covers and took care of that part. The word "you" is ambiguous. cheesy

I wonder when 'you' literally translates to a whole polity. Lol.

THE RETURN OF AMINA

With survival scars that tells great tales
Of a female who finite the finest males.

A brawny young lady chided her father,
Against all odds to enroll as a village soldier.

Day and night she fought with steeled-men,
While she's feared and dreaded by women.

Crowned with sweats and dressed in death's colour
The Sarkin fada forced air into the kakaki to sing to her valour.

Perching on a feeble stallion, waving to the crowd,
She outshines the bravest, and like the sun she's proud.

On lily-livered men she fed to earn a spot
With just a dagger she smear and cut.

The teeth of her dagger has tasted dishes of death(s),
From her adjured prey she tossed their breaths.

Merchants and warriors haunts and desire her prowess
Under privately blinded lights to mate the dagger goddess.

Upon a love in fieriest form demands that the unmanly
Will sheath its weakened ego and meet Allah quickly.

The men better earn their names on her bed
Or the teeth of her dagger will bite them till they're dead.

She's the queen of dagger
And a heart robber.

When you see her coming, run
Or your existence will be absent from the sun.

THE SHOT

Across enemy line
Came stinging rockets

Reducing our platoon to nine.
Bullets squirts off its sockets,

One slitting a soldier's bowel
Like a razor

"On your heels!" Says the Colonel,
Signalling his friend, the major.

Six cowards dropped their accouterments
And carried their legs

Away from the cantonments,
Ignoring our pleas and begs.

They ran out and into the militia zone
Like a brave coward...

Booom! The militia let off their own -
They matched forward (and)....

Further buzzed on
Like bees towards a honeycombed tree,

Shooting from every corner and turn
At any grassy-carmo they see.

The colonel's rifle became sick
A magazine, its antidote.

His pistol also went bleak...
Surrender or also bolt?

Far from us three
I saw them all,

The 6 cowards got down with an RPG
I watched their mutilation fall.

Fear pinched me
But professionalism won't let me be.

My fingers lost a grip to my tool
Due to my shivers,

I heard the Major say "poor little fools"
With pitiful quivers.

Kpaa! A pebble of death
Hit the colonel's throat and he fell to the ground,

The Major yelled as the Colonel's breath
Got lost in the cacophonous sound.

Like an animal the Major charged,
Squinting through his rifle

Into their midst he barged,
His life suddenly lost in a daredevil trifle.

Taking down about twenty four
Militia before my eyes,

Then retreated on the floor
Panting towards me while backing the sky.

He raised his arm, and shook his head
He's left with just one shot off his magazine.

His eyes went browny-red
That's far from the worst fear I have seen.

Because our situation was dire,
In confusion, I saw him bit his lip,

And his fingers all red like a wild fire,
With his arm loosing arm grip.

He stole a brave glint and laughed like a child,
But I knew it was his fears -

The roar from the other side...
He secretly wiped off his stubborn tears.

Aha! For once, I saw a brave man cry,
I believe he was worried about his family.

Who wouldn't when he's about to die?
Their pictures, usually the last in our memory.

He pulled off his last shot
And cleaned it with his sweat,

I cleaned my lense too off its dirty spot
And assumed my Russian roulette.

We shook hands like comrade-in-arms
And positioned for the last shot our life.

'Click!' 'Kpaa!!' ... Our tools fell from our palms
My last image was that of my young wife.

Baby, that last shot was for you,
My camera has really made me brave.

Hey! This is journalist Rotimi Tolu
Reporting live from my grave.(Over!)

LOST

Lonely paddle.. .
On a calm wave,
Stroke after stroke
The journey never ends.
Infinite sight hides
Behind the sunset as
The big yellow ball smiles
At my face - where is home?
East, West, North or South?
Where is land?
Under the ocean?
I'm gonna loose my mind
And...
(Silence)
Where am I?
Desert-sea?

Dryad, Dad and I Before Christmas

The young trees weren't agog with winter snow
As the leaves chose to wither than grow,
Wafting gently in autumnal crocus to the frozen ground
While the night birds carols in sonorous sound.

The fatigue day garbed in prismatic glimmering ice
All over its streets of garden that dazzles the eyes
Of Dryad - then few dabbles in, breaking the ambience
As if the wind was arguing with Silence.

Then the sound lead to another, then another -
A cacophony deafened the air and shakened the order
A man with a chainsaw needs a Christmas tree
He sawed off the root and fissured it with glee

A young lad - a sentry was stationed by the way
He held his own star, lights and candies in a manner somewhat Gay.
"Careful dad!" The tree succumbed its teary droplets on dad
Before making a fall that made Dryad sad.

But its Christmas isn't it?

Life of Py should be a name of a movie, right?

That poem was during one boring day at secondary school (after prep), I was studying one WAEC past question like that during extention and I became confused... And then I just spent my holiday at Nembe, Bayelsa and the experience was so addictive that each time I close my eyes I will just see myself surrounded by water. Then my hostel mates use to call me "Papiwata".

ONE (Diminished Hexaverse)

Who will scratch our back
When our own hands leaves
Our body to ache?

The head will cry,
The neck will drown,
The heart elopes;
And the legs... strained.

Why go when
We can all
Come... to aid?

We're you,
You're us...

Being!

Dedicated to all Nigerians, the true believers of unity.
The poem is quite symbolic.

OBSESSIVELY VAINGLORIOUS (Watch freaks)

The left wrist.
That's it; It a big deal to stare at.
That flesh, rooted with subway veins against a warm bone -
Tufty hairs compassionately bows in genuflecting honour,
Whispering to the skin to be careful
Upon the super models it beds always.

The wrist dresses itself like a Pixiu,
With gold and silver as it aims to outshine the sun and sky,
It belts itself in '904L' glamourous steels
As it hugs a wool of sweaty hairs.
The heart behooves still while its three friends; the dwarf,
The overgrown and the lanky workaholic race in
Sensual moans of tick tock.

Day in day out,
It parties and flashes with different supermodels like a cursed sl.ut
It arouses it when stared at,
Knowing they'd be pleased with their races;
Dumb, numbers and Roman faces like makeups.
It could swore that it loves them all but promiscuity and riches
Would make King Solomon jealous, that's the idea!

Beneath its skins lies a cheery burdened bone
Caged in uncomfortable pleasure, afflicted by weight;
It began to scar away with uncladness begging for a birthday suit.
The flesh too is scarred, its colour fading away ebonious slack,
Luxury, yes, it comes with a pain, a sweat pain indeed.
It cost a fortune to know where the thoughts forms,
On the dials so sexy like a pornnstar.

Their smiles for sight glitters in colourful lumes right across
Their acrylic goggles, jealous sapphires seduces minds.
Who knows how many places the triad peripateticaly steeplechased,
The wrist always get lost in eye caging veneration on its models
While reciprocating in smirky banality quips
Oblivious to its excessive pride of all tick-tock lingua franca.

WHEN ITS SNOWING IN MUSHIN

Seventy nine year old Baba Kayode has seen it all.
“Ah! Sango must hear this… someone must have stolen his fireball”
A strident pensioner from Ijebu-Ode heart palpitates with a cry.
Highly goose bumped; he bolts from the blue through and stuck on his window,
Wondering if the world has ended and how ice-flakes fell from the sky
He wouldn’t dare let his feeble feet feel the ice-cold ground
So he begged his ancestors to show him the lighted tunnel to stroll by.
**********************************************************

Our Landlord deafened by the muteness of its tenants,
The house needs a hearth for its new found winter.
Of course the facility is a privilege as rent would rise and now include
Leather jackets; whether the weather impairs the shelter
Or not, bitter or sweet, tenants shouldn’t bury itself in cotton sheets
Its health is the wealth of the landlord – who collects rent with banter.
***********************************************************

It was daytime and the morning dew seems to have lost its showers.
Mama's Lantern had been frozen by the talking breeze
As its fire shied away from our sight and went to sleep,
And our matchbox suddenly catches pneumonia from last night tease.
Mama ran to us with a box of cloths, wrapping us like 'drumstick Sharwamas',
Lanky Nsirim, now chubby was cold and won't stop with the sneezes.
***********************************************************************

Aunty Theresa, our neighbour would have hugged a fire
If she had seen one, her shivers betrays the bewildering stories of Australia
She had told us when she first moved in, she's a lair!
I caught her sucking on the flakes on her door knob,
While she tries to place a signboard outside the house....
"BLOCKS FOR SALE"!.... on a pensile wire.
*********************************************************************

Odion's father now has a new reason to drown in local gins.
Papa's 1956 cigar pipe became his latest toy,
He looked at the high heaven as if he'd melt the sky with his puffs
Only to be told by Odion's father that God is punishing us for our sins.
A comment which was brushed aside
By Papa's strange grin.
********************************************************************

Tolani walked into our building like a penguin
Fully engrossed with her breath vapors and steams,
Her mother also wrapped her like a punching bag.
It was her who woke Baba Kayode with her scream
When it was reported that she couldn't breath
Properly like she was choking in the heaven of her dream.
*******************************************************************
Outside, Muhammad and Chike in their childishness
Put a handful of snowball in their mouths
Searching for an ice cream flavour, Hmmm.... tasteless!
Canals turns into community playground, smells of frozen water
Swam the air, Children on slates skiing in frozen gutter.
Me,...at my meekest time, showing the day my tiredness.
