Dudes,
I may not be totally right about the MTN entry level. Considering that their call center staff there are mostly contract. However, there are Level 1 staff in other areas of the company asides from the call center (NMC for one). Ask your MTN staff friends (I hope they're not contract call center agents).
Recall I mentioned in my post that there are some exceptions.
However, I am dead-on as per the ranges for any of the four companies.
Like I said earlier, I have worked in 2 of these four companies since 2001, so I'm not talking second hand gist here. If you don't work in any one of these companies, just hold your peace abeg

Your comment about etisalat and Zain are laughable. You guys are outsiders reading newspapers, definitely not insiders.
For instance, Zain has not done any mass sacking or even outsourcing. Nobody has been laid off en masse, despite the various threats and proposals. Only the HR Director, Procurement Director, and 3 CxOs were laid off. Procurement Director has since joined etisalat.
If you're talking layoffs, know for a fact that more than 250 staff have left Zain for various reasons since 2007. Nobody was laid off en masse.
The proposal is under serious dispute by the board of the company, considering that ITS, the Lebanese company who the IT is planned to be outsourced to, belongs to the Group CEO of Zain, Dr Saad Al-Barak.

Who told you etisalat has money to throw around? Ask your friends in etisalat how much they're earning, if you have any friends there.
They pay well, but the pay is not more than the industry average. Take a very good look at the salary bands I defined before you start posting refutals.

peace.

Bros. Most of the entry level positions into NMC are not level 1 but level 2. And nobody is talking about contract staff here. You may have worked in two of the four telecoms but definately not MTN as most of your figures were quite misleading,

@Raskimono
Ask any MTN staff that earns 1.9m per annum if he/she takes more than 75k home monthly. As for the tax. That is something most of the staff cannot fathom.

Most of my figures for MTN? Or the entry level figures in particular?
The only thing I can say is I am currently not working in MTN as at today. So a few exceptions would exist naturally.

Hey Mr Ajanlekoko,
While I may not have anyfacts to dispute your figures for most of the other companies, your figures for etisalat are a total hogwash. Entry level in etisalat, in this case sales/customercare earn between 2.5m and1.8m p.a for university graduates and experienced staff and 1.2m p.a for Poly graduates without experience. For the other positions, etisalat has embarked on a strategy of offering higher wages in order to attract much needed experienced staff from other telcos so you will find that wages are generally higher.
Zain has recently laid off several senior level officers with the majority being managers. Anyone with knowledge of telecomms will know that zain is in a mess financially at the moment and so many of their staff have had to move on.
You stated that managers at etisalat do not have medical benefits. Thats totally false as all staff are covered under the reddington health plan. Etisalat continues to increase bonuses and benefits for staff. A little over 2 months ago, staff credit was tripled for entry level from 10k per month to 30k permonth for entry level and managers get as much as 70k per month on their staff lines. One thing you must understand about these UAE people is that theyre not so much in a hurry for profits and they are more interested in establishing any kinda presence in Nigeria.
You were however right about outsourcing in the technology and IT areas but they recently advertised several vacancies in the IT and tech sections.
I work there and I can provide more facts if needed

I think 'total hogwash' is a bit strong. But no wahala, nothing do me and even you.
Being my usual polite self, I won't respond in like fashion. But let me show you in detail just how much I know about etisalat in fact, and the other operators.

The guys who joined etisalat call center from other operators, and through KPMG last year may earn between 1.8 and 2.5m. But the guys who joined of recent, and in fact the ones currently being interviewed for the Kano call center, and the few vacancies created in Lagos by staff who left, are surely not offered 1.2m, as a matter of fact.  You must be aware that etisalat doesn't offer blanket salaries to everybody, it's strictly by negotiation.
As for Sales, is there really anyone in entry level in etisalat Sales? Maybe a few, but the great majority, at least the shop staff, are all from other operators. You'd hardly expect them to earn 1.2m after spending years in another operator in a similar job.

Also, I said the salaries I quoted were exclusive of medical. I didn't say etisalat had no medical plan. Those are two different things. I apologise for not being explicit, if that was what you wanted to see.

As per offering higher salaries, that may have been true in the very early days of 2008, but I don't think so anymore. What I said is, their wages are not particularly higher comparatively than other operators, for every single cadre of staff.
It is also logic to expect that, if people are moving to a higher position, e.g from specialist to manager, naturally they would earn more money. Which is the same as if they got promoted where they were. Maybe that's the reason for the so-called 'higher wages' perception, since call center agents and shop staff who were on Level 6 in zain moved to etisalat and became supervisors. Do you think they would have earned significantly more money if any, if they moved in parallel, to continue on the same level?

Another example. Who would you say is better off, a Manager earning 9m in etisalat with no car, and a manager earning 8m in MTN with a fuelled and maintained car?

I don't think you know much about zain, judging from your post. Zain is not in any financial mess. In fact, they recorded the highest turnover of the entire Group. The overhead is the problem in Zain, as this has affected the profits. Between October 2006 and December 2008, zain's revenue has grown from about 9bn per month to an average of 18bn a month. But in a situation where you have more than 200 people in Finance alone, in Lagos and the regions, and the financial leakages in the company, the Group had to do something. They definitely want to trim staff strength, and I think that's not really new, because MTN has done something similar in the past, that triggered an exodus, though not on the kind of scale that zain is experiencing right now.

And FYI, like I also said in an earlier post, more than 250 people have left zain in the last 2 years, but but less than 2% of these have actually been laid off. Most of the people laid off were Directors, some HODs, and the 3 CxOs that left early this year. People even know the names of most. People are resigning from zain everyday, particularly Commercial, primarily because of the company's restructuring drive. In fact, the bulk of etisalat Sales team and CC team (supervisors, managers in Call Center) are from zain, no? I don't think anybody who joined etisalat from zain was laid off. You can ask around yourself, after all you work there.

etisalat has not paid any bonus to any member of the Nigerian team, I don't know where you're getting this one from, maybe in your dreams. The company just launched October last year, haba, and it's not yet six months in live operations. So where did the bonus yarn come from?

Abi they've paid only you bonus? cheesy
It is true that staff airtime credit was increased. But it wasn't actually increased. What you don't know is that that is actually the approved airtime, and the one allocated to staff since July 08 was a temporary allowance. Even the handset subsidy they paid in March to specialists and below. It's not new, it has only just been implemented.

Hope that doesn't also come off as 'total hogwash'. But then you're free to post whatever you like about my figures.

As for me, I think I've posted too much information in fact. So I'll refrain from posting any more detail.

Peace.

That's interesting, considering all my previous story and explanation. In no single level, in any of the 4 companies, do people earn the same thing.
That's why I used bands to describe the salary.
