I have watched with dismay as people keep saying we are in the 4th republic just because it ryhms with some info concerning Gen. Buhari. As far as I know:

Nigeria's first republic was between 1963 and 1966

Second was between 1979 and 1983

Third was between 1999 and 2003

Forth was between 2003 and 2007

Fifth was between 2007 and 2011

Sixth was between 2011 and 2015

and now 7th which will be between 2015 and 2019

Please correct me if am wrong.

4th Republic (1999-date) on the 4th constitution.

As far as the government is still operating via the 1999 constitution, we're still in the 4th republic. A fifth Republic would be born if the current constitution is repealed, and an entirely new one is enacted.

Like all social science concept, a republic does not exist in a vaccum. It owes it existence to a legal order- a constitution. The first republic was a creation of the 1963 Republican constitution. It ended with the first military coup. The second Republic was created by the 1979 Presidential constitution and it was brought to an end when young Muhammadu Buhari deposed Shehu Shagari's government. The third Republic came to life through General Ibrahim Babangida's transition to civil rule with the enactment of the 1989 constitution. There wer e elections into all the elective position except that of the president. The fourth Republic is a creation of the 1999 constitution as amended 2011. President Buhari is the Fourth president of the Fourth Republic
