Rep. Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje, Chairperson, House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, has called for the evacuation of Nigerians within 24 hours from South Africa owing to ongoing attacks on non-indigenes. Ukeje (PDP-Abia) made the appeal in a phone interview with newsmen on Thursday in Ibadan.

She said that the call was necessary because of increasing attacks on Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike in South Africa. “The Federal Government of Nigeria should rise up to the occasion by having contingency plans to evacuate Nigerians within 24 hours to avoid us losing our citizens to these attacks.

“It is expedient to think of where all Nigerians can gather within 24 hours for safety either in our embassy or mission for the safety of our citizens,’’ she said. The lawmaker suggested that a concrete arrangement with some airlines should be made to evacuate Nigerians back home. She also urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to equally mobilise to take care of the returnees.
Ukeje noted with concern that that the xenophobia was degenerating to Afrophobia as many black Africans, including Nigerians, were being attacked from Johannesburg to Durban. She advised the Nigerian government against delay till some of her citizens are killed in the latest attacks before implementing its citizen diplomacy policy.
“Unfortunately, there is no serious condemnation from South Africa government on this attacks, hence the need for Nigerian government to be proactive and rescue her citizens as soon as possible,’’ she said.

She expressed surprise that South Africa that housed African Parliament and other institutions of Africa in the continent could descend so low to the extent of her nationals attacking other Africans living in that country. Ukeje said her committee was in close contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to see what could be done to protect Nigerians in South Africa, while the House is to engage relevant stakeholders on the matter.

Rep. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora, also told pressmen on phone that a motion on the issue would be tabled during the plenary session of the House. Dabiri-Erewa (APC-Lagos) condemned the attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa, saying it was disgusting for South Africans to be treating Nigerians like that despite the Nigeria’s role during the apartheid struggle.

Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro, Minister of State II, for Foreign Affairs, has said that no Nigerian was killed in the attack against foreigners in South Africa. “We are following the developments in South Africa and efforts are being made to protect Nigerian citizens in South Africa,’’ Obanikoro assured.

That's a very good step and what FG should do but am wondering if most Nigerians in SA are willing to Come baCk home??
For those coming back, What adequate provisions and welfare package does the FG have for them here in Nigeria?... Its not Just evacuating them to naija and leaving them stranded with nothing doing here...

The thing is, are the Nigerians there ready to come back home?

I remember when the Govt evacuated Nigerians from Libya some 2-3years ago, a lot of the returnees complained of neglect and lack of oppurtunity.

What has changed now?

They only listen to Madiba and unfortunately he is no more. Zuma seems incapable to put a stop to this madness. Just as our own FG has failed to end terror in Nigeria, the South African government should not find it difficult to end xenophobic attacks. I think the latter is easier to end than the former except their government really wants immigrants out of the country.

If they can't handle such a small challenge, can they ever cope with terror if it comes visiting and God forbid?

Shame on them!

Nonsense!

This latest madness in SA started after the King of Zulu land told his subjects that they should not wait for the Govt to act b4 they took care of the 'foreigners in their midst who were taken their jobs'. It was the scapegoating of a group of people by the highest traditional authority in Kwa-ZuluNatal that is partly responsible for the latest killings.

So those people who were somewhat rationalizing that irresponsible statement and scapegoating of a group of people by that TOUT of an Oba of Lagos ISLAND would perhaps now get a little understanding of why some of us where completely hostile to those comments and all it represented.

I hear some people are getting ready to take the irresponsible King of Zulu to ICC for Crimes against Humanity. I wish them God's Speed

We are Big brother Africa for a reason.
Evacuate as many as you can and have them transported to their country of origin on our expense.
Iya I believe other countries are making efforts to evacuate their people too(some don begin the process self), let's help our own people first.

This xenophobic attack continue to fester and I gathered from friends over there that the government of south Africa is afraid to fight it's citizens for fear of loosing votes. They were once slaves but forgot in such a hurry. They have suddenly lost their senses and affableness ,the derring-do of other African countries during the time of apartheid, subjecting them to this malarkey act. "Murder" is unjustifiable, killing fellow Africans with temerity is highly barbaric, inhumane sickening and untenable .I pray there are no reprisal for this susceptible dastard act.Racism is a joke compared to this .

xenophobia is a misnomer in this context.

What are Nigerians still doing in south Africa? It's not worse off back home.
