Newcastle United's Sammy Ameobi set for Nigeria call-up after impressing Super Eagles boss.
Sammy Ameobi said he wanted to play for Nigeria earlier this season and Stephen Keshi has confirmed he will get a call-up soon.
Nigeria are set to call up Sammy Ameobi after his run of games for Newcastle United.
The younger Ameobi brother has played 25 times for United this season as he bids to earn an extended contract at St James’ Park. He has scored twice – against Spurs and Hull – and came on in the second half against Tottenham on Sunday.
And that has been enough to catch the eye of Nigeria manager Stephen Keshi, who has said today that he will call him up if he is eligible. “I’ve been impressed with Sammy. If he’s willing and eligible, we’ll try to get him,” Keshi said.
Ameobi has five caps for the England under-21 side but said back in August that he wants to follow the lead of older brother Shola and declare for Nigeria, where both of his parents were born.
“It wasn’t a difficult decision because I decided to follow my heart and I think it’s the right thing to do,” Ameobi said. “I saw Shola at the World Cup and for him to play at a major tournament like that is a big motivation.” He has played twice for Nigeria under-20s.
Nigeria confirmed the appointment of Keshi earlier this week, and they will face Egypt, Tanzania and Chad in their African Nations qualification pool.
