Most people living outside Abia state are yet to come to terms with the reason why the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP Dr Okezie Ikpeazu emerged victorious in the just concluded governorship election. You may be wondering if Abians are blind to vote the PDP considering the inefficiency of the out-going governor Chief T.A. Orji.

Well, the case of Abia was the case of the Lagos governorship election played all over again although with a twist. It was more of a statement made by the largest tribe in the state- the Ngwas.

A bit of history: Abia is made up of different tribes, the Ngwas being the largest in terms of population size and number of local governments. They are also the largest clan in the south east according to wikipedia. Their land is a very fertile plain (compared to that of other tribes), water is clean and readily available and the people predominantly farmers. Ngwa land stretches from Isiala- Ngwa to Obingwa, cuts across the entire Aba and ends at Ukwa Ngwa.

The Ngwas are very accommodating. If you need land from a typical ngwa man, all you need do is ask. The reply you would get is 'ala juru eju' (the land is abundant) and you would be asked to make your choice. This kind gesture has been termed acts of foolishness by other tribes (Ndi ohuhu as the Ngwa man would call them) in Abia and as such the Ngwa man is held in contempt. Most parts of Aba were acquired by Ndi ohuhu through this means.

Today, the Ngwa man is held in contempt and ngwa has come to be a derogatory word even in Aba. Most Ndi ohuhu would frown at giving off their daughters in marriage to their hosts, sneering at them and calling them names even to their faces. Talk about being victims of xenophobia in your own land!

Now back to the elections; Dr Okezie (PDP) is from Obingwa, Chief Nyerere (APC) is ukwa ngwa and Dr. Alex Otti (APGA) is from Aro- ngwa. Most Ngwas don't have any problem with any of these candidates however the way other tribes have being going about the election, using derogatory terms on the Ngwas whilst throwing their weight behind everybody's favorite Dr. Otti made the Ngwas pick Dr Okezie as their choice.

This has nothing to do with T.A. Orji, he is well hated in Aba and people will keep plummeting him with sachet waters to express their displeasure.
The Ngwas have used their population and votes to make a statement- No man should be despised in his own land.

PS: I am a core APC fan and my views represent a factual and unbiased dissection of the election in Abia state.

Of course an Ngwa man won the election! I just explained why the ngwas didn't voted for Dr Okezie and not Dr Otti.

To answer your second question, if they do I'd have been eaten a long time ago.
