Given the phenomenal growth of internet connectivity and the growing use of data within the Nigerian environment, the internet as a means of marketing communication is becoming increasingly popular because of it's wide reach and the incredibly low cost (as little as $10) of advertising using this medium. Despite it's being easily affordable a lot of Nigerians are still not taking advantage of it to promote their businesses. This thread however seeks to share knowledge and inform people about the several benefits and advantages of internet marketing.

In the coming days i would be discussing various methods of advertising using the internet, your contributions are also welcome.

As i said earlier the list is by no means exhaustive and i may add to it as we progress in this discussion.

To begin with, any body serious about internet marketing should endeavor to have his or her own website as this is central to a good number of online marketing options available. Though it's not compulsory to begin with, you would be well advised to have one developed for you along the line to take full advantage of the marketing options available in the digital space. It is also pertinent to ensure that you get your website designed by a developer who has a good understanding internet marketing so that your website is properly designed and optimized for that purpose. A good website must at least have some of the following attributes.

*It must be very informative
*It must be Visible
*It must have a good reputation
*It must have relevance to your business
*It must be pleasing to the eye
*It must be interactive and have channels for feedback

Before going in to details of how to take advantage of various digital marketing options available, i would like to mention that with regards to websites one can evaluate the potential of any particular website by checking it's web rankings via www.alexa.com here you will get actionable analytics which can help you evaluate and determine the potential of any website you may choose to use to do your marketing.

Technology giant Google is believed to be the biggest player in the digital media space with revenues in excess of $45 billion in 2014 generated mostly from it's advertising activities. In terms of website ranking they are also number in the world and number one in Nigeria so anyone serious about taking advantage of the online marketing media, you must be ready to take Google very seriously. There are basically three ways through which a business can take advantage of Google for advertising purposes, one is through Search Engine Optimization(SEO), second is through doing Google classified ads and third its through Google Display Networks.

SEO is basically a very cheap or even free way of creating awareness for our business through optimization of our business websites so that when a person is searching for the kind of product we sell or service we provide our website comes out on top or at the very worst in the front page of the Google search. This is very necessary because for any search Google can come up with millions of websites and navigating through them for the searcher would be a herculean task so most searchers would always go for the best options that comes up in the first page of their search. Achieving SEO is a very elaborate subject with some very technical aspects and as such the scope of this write up will not be able to cover. My advise to website owners is to insist your web developer optimizes your website for Google so that it always comes out on top when a Google search is done for your product or service. In this way you would be able to get a lot of free publicity for your website and fully utilize it's potential.

The second option is through Google classified ads, in other to take advantage of it's hugely successful search engine, (65% of searches on the internet are done using Google) Google as provided an opportunity for those seeking to promote their business on that platform without compromising the integrity of their search engine. If you want to ensure that your business website enjoys maximum visibility when a search is carried out in your area of business, you can place classified adverts which will appear on top of the page when a search is done. You can also determine how much you want to pay per click and the keywords you need to use to ensure your website shows up where ever it is necessary. This is also a very cheap and effective way to give prominence to your business

The third option available through which one can utilize Google is through it's Display Network. Here Google partners with other website owners to display advert on their website(Adsense). Through this program it is possible for an advertiser to
display advert copies on several websites and get everything to be managed by Google
AdWords. While it may be practically impossible to place ad copies on several website, with Google
Display Network an advertiser can place his advert on all the websites that partners with Google.
Among these partner websites are Vanguard, Tribune, Sahara Reporter, BBC, CNN, ThisDay, Hi 5 etc. Google
not only help place your advert on these media but also provide a tool for managing your ad
performance.

The major advantage with Google is the flexiblity of their pricing. You can start advertising with Google for as little as ten dollars and you can determine how much you want to pay per click for your adverts. However your ability to spend and manage your advert money effectively would determine the success of your advertisement campaign.

It's targeting process is very dynamic and adverts can be targeted at specific industry, location, firms, job level, educational back ground etc. If you are a business professional and you do not have a presence on LinkeiIn, you are undoubtedly missing valuable opportunities to connect and grow your business.

One of the key advantages of linkedin is it's powerful search functionality which you can use to track and target specfic people and decision makers be it in government, industry or organization you are interested in. Via linkedin you can gain access to key decision makers thereby boycotting secretaries, receptionist and gate men who gain their relevance by shielding their 'oga' from you. Through linked for instance you can find out who is the Admin manager of a particular organization you want to do business with and connect with him directly on linkedin and if he doesn't accept your request immediately with linkedin's premium account you would be able to access him via email were you would be able to express your self to him in detail and initiate a business relationship.

And as you have with facebook, you can also create a company page on linkedin with which you can use to showcase your business and attract potential clientèle to it. Linkedin page also allows you to:

The linkedin marketing model allows you to market your company through your company page, company updates, display advertising, in mails and sponsored updates and the beauty about it is that it allows you to reach out and target directly the people and organisations who are most relevant to your business and are more likely to patronise you. It should be noted though that for this niche targeting that linkedin provides they charge a slight premium in their advertising rates and as such they may a bit more expensive to advertise on than other social media platforms but it's more certain you would get results if you target your advert well and you are marketing the right product or service.

To take advantage of Jumia's vibrant platform to market your products or services, you must first register as a vendor. If they find your product or service acceptable to sell on their platform, they then negotiate the pricing with you. One thing to note is that price is a major determining factor to sell onlie because there are so many competing deals available and as such you may be left with little or no margin as Jumia would still take a commission off the low price you are offering. However if what you are after is visibility or large turnover and not necessarily immediate profits then jumia would be a nice pale to show case your business.
