The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have warned against any move by the government to remove subsidy from petroleum products.

Nigeria’s National Assembly had passed the 2015 appropriation bill without allocating any money for subsidy payment.

Speaking on Wednesday, Deputy President of the NLC and chairman of the joint May Day celebration of the NLC and TUC, Peter Adeyemi, told journalists that organised Labour believed that government had never subsidised petroleum products.

The Labour leader lamented that the bane of the sector had been corruption, pointing out that past government tried without success to address the issue.

He said: “If you are asking whether we will back the removal of fuel subsidy, the answer is no. It is not as easy as that. You know that it has been a very contentious issue over the years. We have always said that there is nothing like subsidy. It is all about corruption.

“Let me take your mind back and say that this same issue has been something that numerous government have embarked upon without an end. During the Olusegun Obasanjo’s government, this exercise was embarked upon by the government about 11 times and both the NLC and the TUC engaged the government.

“So, it is like the more you look, the less you see. For us in Labour, we are not going to support that because it is outside our mandate as leaders. We hope that the incoming government, in a desperate bid to look for money, will not look for money in the wrong place”.

Let him get their first, beside am wondering why we should be buying the crude oil we produce. I understand 445,000 barrel is been reserved daily for domestic consumption, this i believe is enough after refining. Therefore Nigerian should be paying only for transportation to the refinery, the cost of refining, cost of transportation from refinery to filling stations.

The implication of the $20bn story and the new regime is that we should have an additional $20bn, $10bn given lower prices, if the old corrupt order no longer applies. If you believe that $20bn disappeared in a fiscal year in which the FG paid salaries and debts, it must follow that this money would now be available to be appropriately spent, discounting for lower oil prices of course. There should, therefore, be no question of a "desperate bid to look for money".

Can anyone explain these incongrous statements in bold please. A summary of what is claimed is as follows:

1) Trade unions warn against subsidy removal
2) Trade unions state there has never been subsidy

If 2) is true, 1) cannot be true. Both statements are mutually irreconciliable.

An exasperating thing I have noticed about Nigeria is that because corruption is so endemic, any claims about corruption is deemed to be true by a credulous populace even if the claims are patently false and so irrational as to defy common sense.

The trade unions should be directing their aggressions to the right place. The alleged plan of subsidy removal is being planned by the present administration, so why attacking the incoming govt.

In as much as i'm not a fan of buhari, i must say that, if we re to make progress as a nation, fuel subsidy must be removed. No matter how you try u can never deal with the corruption in that sector. Come to think of it, with the current price of crude now below 60 dollar, i don't think subsidy is still needed.

i pity those that say nothing concerbs buhari bec nothing to remove as budget is already passed without subsidy. He who wears the cap will know when the time comes. Is on record that buhari at several fora has condemn the payment of fuel subsidy taging it a ruse. Therefore he was only helped by the stopage and none inclusion in 2015 budget. Am not afraid bec buhari has promised to reduce price of fuel to N40. We are waiting

And dis yeye person we call president jonathan said he will bring all those indicted in d subsidy fraud to justice but yet nothing has happened.instead he kept encouraging corruption and turning dieziani into a goddess.NNPC don't even have the records of barrels we produce per day.He used trillions for campaign.awarded mouth watering contracts to touts and militants while millions of educated youths are jobless.I really thank God for saving us from the hands of dis wicked man.I'm certain we have been liberated with d emergence of Buhari. He is surely the MAN.SAI BABA.
