Super Eagles Record at African Cup of Nations,

1) 1978 CAN
The tournament heralded the beginning of great things to come. Segun Odegbami shared the highest goal scorer prize with 2 other players.

2) 3 in 1
Nigera hosted and won the 1980 edition of the African Cup of Nations, with individual prizes to boot. Segun Odegbami (a.k.a mathematical) was joint-highest goal scorer and ex-Super Eagles coach Christian Chukwu was most valuable player.

3) The ‘thing’ between Nigeria and Cameroun
They have been Nigeria’s nemesis literally. Cameroun have won the African Cup of Nations 4 times, three of these titles have been won by besting Nigeria. Nigeria to them lost in 1984 and 1988. History repeated itself: Nigeria lost to them controversially in the 2002 edition of the cup co-hosted by both countries.

4) Fixation with silver
Nigeria have been runners-up four times—1984, 1988, 1990, 2000. This fixation with second position is shared with Ghana (they have 4 too).

5) Bronze! Bronze! Bronze! Bronze! Bronze! Bronze! Bronze!

7 times have the Super Eagles claimed bronze at the African Cup of Nations. Now if winning silver a record 4 times can be termed fixation, what do we call this? Mania? Madness? No other country comes close—Cote d’ Ivoire has just four.

6) Never been fourth
This means that they have never lost a third place match. 7 third place matches, 7 wins. What a record.

7) Rashidi Yekini
The iconic forward was highest goal scorer at two consecutive African Cup of Nations tournaments. He led 1992 tournament with four goals, and 5 goals at 1994 tournament. Overall, he’s no push-over: he has 13 CAN goals. Only Cameroun Samuel Eto’o (18) and Ivory Coast Laurent Pokou (14) have more.

cool Jay Jay Okocha
Jay jay okocha was joint-highest goal scorer and most valuable player at Tunisia 2004.

9) Julius Aghahowa
Julius aghahowa, the back flip expert, was joint-highest goal scorer at Nigeria/Cameroun 2002. No player scorer more than a meagre 3 goals.

10) Emmanuel Emenike
He was Nigeria's goal hero at the last CAN in South Africa. He scored four goals to claim joint-top scorer.

Salisu Yusuf confirmed as Keshi’s new assistant, Amokachi exits:

The El Kanemi trainer has been listed in the Super Eagles technical crew to take on Chad in next month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier

El Kanemi coach Salisu Yusuf has been confirmed as the new assistant coach of the Super Eagles who will work with Stephen Keshi in his second spell as coach.

It means that Daniel Amokachi will no longer be part of the team, in fulfillment of speculations that have held sway for the past month when Keshi signed his contract.

Though the Nigeria Football Federation declined to announce the new change, it subtly put it out when it released the list of players from the Nigeria Professional Football League called up to camp in preparation for their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Chad next month.

Amokachi’s name was missing in the list as Salisu Yusuf was listed assistant coach. The former Enyimba trainer had been part of the NFF team that recently underwent training in London to use the Prozone football technology.

Yusuf’s choice stems from his deep knowledge of the domestic scene where he has had spells at the biggest clubs including winning the league with Kano Pillars.

Meanwhile, former international Ike Shorunmu remains as goalkeeper trainer.

Nigeria will play their first Afcon 2017 qualifier against Chad in Kaduna on June 13.

Why Salisu Yusuf was picked as Keshi’s assistant ?

The El Kanemi Warriors tactician was a popular choice because of his pedigree in the local scene, a Goal source claimed.

“Yusuf has coached so many top clubs in Nigeria namely Enyimba, Kano Pillars, El Kanemi Warriors, to mention but a few. He has also had a stint as second assistant coach of the Super Eagles during Samson Siasia’s 11 months tenure as at the time when Dutch coach Simon Kalika was the first assistant coach of the team. So Yusuf is highly qualified to assist Keshi and will definitely help him in scouting for the best legs in the Nigerian league since he is an active coach of the local league,” the source said.
Goal can also reveal that the Nigeria Football Federation will name Keshi’s assistants before the end of this week since camping would start on May 18

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has allowed players invited to the Super Eagles for next month’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Chad to feature for their clubs in Wednesday’s Nigeria Professional Football League Week 10 matches.

Camp was scheduled to open on Tuesday with 26 players from the domestic scene. However, they can now go back to play for their clubs in tomorrow's matches.

“We want to allow the players to feature for their clubs in the midweek games, so that they will know that once they report to camp, they will not be going anywhere again," Keshi was quoted by the NFF website.

“It is important that they come to camp and concentrate. We don’t want distractions, especially with the team scheduled to play a number of friendly matches in the weeks to come before the qualifier against Chad."

All the 26 players were expected to report to camp on Tuesday, but the grace of 48 hours will now ensure they help their clubs’ fortunes in the Week 10 matches.

The 53-year-old former defender has invited three goalkeepers, nine defenders, six midfielders and eight strikers from the domestic league for the match, with the list of overseas-based professionals due to be released this weekend.

Nigeria have been drawn in an Afcon qualifying group that includes Egypt, Chad and Tanzania and will play their first game against Chad in Kaduna on June 13

History of the super eagles..

After playing other colonies in unofficial games since the 1930s, Nigeria played its first official game in October 1949, while still a British colony. The team played warm up games in England against various amateur teams like Dulwich Hamlet, Bishop Auckland and South Liverpool.

The team's first major success was a gold medal in the 2nd All-Africa games, with 3rd place finishes in the 1976 and 1978 African Cup of Nations to follow.

In 1980 the team had such players as Leyton Orient's John Chiedozie and Tunji Banjo, and the Muda Lawal/Christian Chukwu-led Super Eagles won the Cup for the first time in Lagos. Nigeria won the men's football event at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, beating Mexico, Brazil and Argentina in the process. They were runners up in the same event, losing to Argentina in a rematch of the 1996 event

In 1984 and 1988, Nigeria reached the Cup of Nations final, losing both times to Cameroon. Three of the four African titles won by Cameroon have been won by defeating Nigeria. Missing out to Cameroon on many occasions has created an intense rivalry between both nations. Two notable occasions; narrowly losing out on qualification for the 1990 World Cup and then the controversial final of the 2000 African Cup of Nations where a goal scored by Victor Ikpeba during a penalty shoot out was disallowed by the referee.

FIFA World Cup record:

Nigeria finally reached the World Cup for the first time in 1994. They were managed by Clemens Westerhof. Nigeria topped their group which included Argentina, Bulgaria, and Greece. Nigeria defeated Bulgaria 3–0, lost to Argentina 1–2, and reached the second round after a 2–0 victory over Greece. In the second round Nigeria played Italy and took the lead with a goal from Emenike at 25 min. Nigeria were within two minutes of qualifying for the Quarter-finals of the 1994 World Cup in the game against Italy but Roberto Baggio scored to take the game to extra time. He also scored the eventual winning goal. The game ended 2–1 in favour of the Italians.

1998 World Cup:
In 1998 Nigeria returned to the World Cup alongside Cameroon, Morocco, Tunisia, and South Africa. Optimism was high due to its manager Bora Milutinović and the return of most 1994 squad members. In the final tournament Nigeria were drawn into group D with Spain, Bulgaria, Paraguay. Nigeria scored a major upset by defeating Spain 3–2 after coming back twice from being 1–0 and 2–1 down. The Eagles qualified for the second round with a win against Bulgaria and a loss to Paraguay. The team's hopes of surpassing its 1994 performance was shattered after a 1–4 loss to Denmark.

2002 & 2006 World Cups:
The 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan, saw Nigeria again qualify with optimism. With a new squad and distinctive pastel green kits the Super Eagles were expected to build on its strong performances in the 2000 and 2002 African Cup of Nations. Nigeria were drawn into group F with powerhouses Sweden, Argentina, and England. The first game against Argentina started with a strong defence that kept the first half scoreless. In the 61st minute Gabriel Batistuta breached the Nigerian defence to put Argentina in the lead 1–0 and win the game. Nigeria's second game against Sweden saw them take the lead but later lose 2–1. Nigeria then drew 0–0 with England and bowed out in the first round.

Nigeria missed out on qualification for the 2006 World Cup after finishing level on points in the qualification group with Angola, but having an inferior record in the matches between the sides.

2010 World Cup
On 14 November 2009, Nigeria qualified for the 2010 World Cup after defeating Kenya by 3–2 in Nairobi.[5]

Nigeria lost its opening match against Argentina 1–0 at Ellis Park Stadium following a Gabriel Heinze header in the 6th minute.[6] In its second game Nigeria led early on by a goal from Kalu Uche. A red card against Sani Kaita gave Greece the advantage. Greece scored the equaliser late in the first half and Nigeria conceded the second goal in the second half and lost the game 2–1. They then drew 2–2 with South Korea with goals from Kalu Uche and Yakubu but failed to qualify for the next round. On 30 June 2010, following the team's early exit and poor showing, the President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan suspended the national football team from international competition for two years.[7] This suspension put the team at risk of being banned from international football by FIFA for reasons of political interference.[8]

On 5 July 2010, the Nigerian government rescinded its ban of the national football team from FIFA/CAF football competitions,[9] but the sanction of suspension was applied by FIFA some three months after.[10] On 4 October 2010, Nigeria was indefinitely banned from international football due to government interference following the 2010 World Cup.[10] Four days later, however, the ban was "provisionally lifted" until 26 October, the day after the officially unrecognised National Association of Nigerian Footballers (NANF) dropped its court case against the NFF.

2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil:
Nigeria's campaign opened with a disappointing 0-0 draw over Iran. Four days later the team played their second game against Bosnia and Herzegovina. A 29th-minute Peter Odemwingie goal gave Nigeria their first World Cup win since 1998. They faced Argentina in the final game: a 3rd minute Lionel Messi goal for the opposition was followed almost instantly with an equalizer by Ahmed Musa. Messi gave Argentina the lead back just before half-time. In the second half Musa leveled the game out again, only for Marcos Rojo to put Argentina 3-2 ahead minutes later. Nigeria lost the match, but still qualified for the round of 16.

In the Round of 16, Nigeria faced France, and held them off until the 79th minute when a Paul Pogba header gifted France the lead. An own goal by Joseph Yobo in injury time put the result beyond any doubt: Nigeria was out. This is the third time Nigeria is eliminated in the round of 16 and they have yet to enter in Quarter-finals in the FIFA World Cup.

the 1994 team is arguably Nigerias all time best team:
