FG Seeks Secret Trial For Biafran Activists by peckhamboi: 11:45pm On May 19, 2015
The Federal Government has applied for closed-door trial in the treason charge against Benjamin Onwuka, a lawyer and 11 others, members of the Biafra Zionist Federation, a group campaigning for the secession of eastern Nigeria from Nigeria. The excised territory will be declared as Biafra, like the one declared 48 years ago.

At a resumed hearing on Tuesday at the Federal High Court, Enugu, the prosecuting counsel, Mr David Kaswe, prayed the court to exclude members of the public from further hearing on the matter.

Kaswe said that the application when granted would enable his remaining witnesses to testify in the matter.

He said two of his witnesses that had yet to testify in the matter were not disposed to doing that in the public as they had received threats to their life.

The prosecuting counsel said that the application was in the best interest of justice.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Olu Omotayo, opposed the motion on the grounds that the matter commence in the full glare of the public.

He said that the court would err if it granted such application as according to him, there had not been any breach of order since the commencement of the trial.

At the resumed hearing, the court admitted as exhibits 46 empty bottles of beer, 25 litres of petrol, 15 cutlasses and six CD tapes.

A Prosecution Witness, Cpl. Michael Udemba, said that the exhibits were recovered from the suspects on the day of their arrest.

Udemba said that the empty bottles and fuel were to be used as explosives to set the premises of Enugu State Broadcasting Service ablaze.

The Judge, Justice D.V. Agishi, adjourned the matter till June 10 for ruling on the closed-door trial application and continuation of hearing.

The suspects have been in custody since June 2014. They were arrested for alleged invasion of ESBS in an attempt to make a broadcast for the secession of Biafra.

In 1967, the military governor of Eastern Nigeria, Emeka Ojukwu had driven the region to self rule, as Biafra. But the rebellion was crushed three years after by Nigeria’s Federal forces.

Our courts are corrupt and incompetent and political prisoners like these ones would naturally become a feeding frenzy for them and the police including the public prosecution office , you will see all of the three arms of the keepers and custodian of the law cozying up with family members of the victims ,just to swindle them of their hard earned money.

Rule number 1: Don't even let them put you in that jail , it's as good as shooting you in the back.

And don't go to court for the wrong reasons.

These guys look like they need serious rehabilitation. The prosecution team should just withdraw the case and let these guys go back to their families for mercy sake and to conserve govt resources. What harm can these guys possibly cause?

As an aside, i find it amusing that the prosecuting counsel is named Mr David Kaswe while the defense counsel is named Mr Olu Omotayo. i find it very amusing considering the childish verbal brawls on this site grin

Nigeria is one after all cheesy

They should face the law for acts of treason whether in private or live streamed. We cannot afford to set a precedence for subjugation of the rule of law under this new dispensation. I give Kudos to GEJ for not pandering to sentiments and interfering in this process. There are better ways to seek secession, why do they allow themselves suffer ridicule and dehumanizing prisons when they know the position of the law?

See how their pot-bellies have suddenly disappeared.

Since June 2014?

Can't a deal be arrived at? They plead guilty and get time already served, warnings, a repeated offense means a longer jail term and send these men home.

This is just pointless as we are just trying to make an example but it is just being unfair. What they did was not right but seriously they have been for almost a year now.

they should be tried and dealt the strong arm of justice. The moment you resort to any form of violence, you lose my support, I do not subscribe to that at all, I deem it to be the last resort after genuine efforts have been made... even Ojukwu that went ahead to declare Biafra an independent nation (under God? lol) still is being chastised by many for not seeking further peaceful options; but I feel he did enough, esp the Aburi meeting which Gown reniged upon..

I must also add these guys are not the type of people we need a thousand miles near the corridors of power in Biafra... you seize the broadcasting station, make a broadcast.. and then what? That means Biafra is now in existence and independent? Lack of following your thoughts to a conclusive end and even options per each possible outcome is what a smart person should do... I am glad they failed and are being prosecuted.

I have no doubt that at the appropriate time, as far as the sun rises from the east... Biafra will rise. Maka Chukwu.

Was this not the same old, flabby looking cowards with beer belly and b.reast the size of a teenage girl who stupidly felt taking over a radio station is all they needed to establish a sovereign state and had scampered for their lives with their hunter-guns when the securities came to test their resolve? Lol. What kind of freedom-fighters do that?
Oh Please hang them! not for treason. But for being fat cowards and for opting to publicise it.

Most of these men are just victims of the typical "blancket arrests" as always done by the Nigerian police. I strongly suspect these old men are either the relatives or neighbours of the Barrister onwuka guy. There exist in igboland an overdose of young ebullient men willing to engage. So parading half naked octagenerians as footsoldiers of Biafra doesn't make sense to me

Buhari woul rather grant amnesty to Boko Haram, host them in Aso Rock.
Then will love to have the Biafrans beheaded.

Ironically, our quest for Biafra is stop prevent the madness of the Jiharists from reaching our lands.
