It is important to understand the cause of pressure sores in a paraplegic patient before an informed treatment decision can be made. Pressure sores in paraplegic patient occur as a result of prolonged pressure on bony points due to impairment of sensory perception in those areas. They occur commonly in the buttocks, over the prominence of the upper thigh bones and sometimes at the back of the heels. Prevention is the key as they are often difficult to treat. Precautionary measures to be taken include ensuring that sitting or sleeping positions are changed regularly like every two hours. Keeping the skin clean and free of moisture, sleeping on well cushioned mattress like the water bed . etc. Where pressure sores have developed, depending on the severity patient may require hospitalization and wound care.
The surgeon will determine which mode of wound cover is appropriate for the type of pressure sore the patient has. These usually ranged from split thickness skin grafting to flap coverage. Those who have flap cover tend to do much better than ordinary skin grafting as the latter might suffer frequent recurrence.

Helloo Lizboh,

The time of occurence to the time of recurrence and persistent flat foot is really long. At 2 years it would have been easier to correct with electrical stimulation, effective muscle and tendon facilitation programs and functional re-education with some gait therapy. The massaging machine you purchased could have helped as you stated but you wouldn't have been able to pick correct muscles that were affected when your child had what would probably be injection palsy. The flat foot is still persistent because the muscles that control fine and complex movement in the foot were not strengthened enough to make your child walk with a functional gait. There are several things you could do now, you will need to see a podiatrist or a physiotherapist with a good experience in this matter to have a proper examination, physical and x-ray scan to make you decide whether your child will need more muscle strengthening, medial arch or long arch for the foot and gait training. Last option, your child might need a foot surgery to re-align the foot components.

I'm a prosthetic and Orthotic graduate and i'm a consultant in my field. We are the magicians that make amputees walk again. Most Nigerians feel it's a dead end after being amputated but it's not true, here in Nigeria we manufacture artificial limbs e.g(leg, hand, feet, toe) etc. With this artificial limb your life is returned back to normal meaning you can function as in run, play football, basketball, hv good coitus with your spouse etc. Our consultancy is linked with several prosthetic/orthotic centres in the north, south, east and west. Contact us for your prosthetic limbs and orthotic deformity issues email: davidconcept89@gmail.com

Well said Dboss.

In my line of work. I have come to notice that, Nigerian's are not aware of the leaps, that prosthetic technology has taken in this country. One can't blame them, because what they mostly see in their every day lives, is the disabled person without an arm or a leg begging in the street or near a traffic light.

What they don't notice, people walking around who are wearing, or using one form of prosthesis or another. Their movements,so precisely normal. Most people around are not aware.

The prosthetic technologies, used previously in the various National orthopeadic hospitals around the country, were not helping to change that outlook. But with the in roads, being made by Prosthetic technology manufacturers, from around the world in Nigeria. Companies like..

1. Ottobock www.ottobock-export.com
2. Ossur www.ossur.com
3. Win walker www.win-walker.com/
4. Jaipaur www.jaipurfoot.org
5. International red cross

The above have their presence in Nigeria, they work with various country reps www.ifeanhealth.com, www.purpleprosthetics.com, www.rocc.com.ng, deltaorthopediclab.com/ability.htm. Plus they are also helping to setup certified centers around the country. They are also providing training to professionals, in the National orthopeadic hospitals, on how to fit patients with their prosthesis.

Change has truly began, No more do patients with disabilities or amuputee, need to travel for fitting of prosthesis, as they can be handled in the country.

Re: Orthopaedic Matters: Solution for back Pain by brianromel(m): 9:53am On Jun 09, 2015
You back is important to you and your family.

Treat it well and it will hold you up in your old age. Treat it badly and .....

As our body grows older and wiser, Gravifty, Stress, Accidents and Strain accumulated over the years of constant seating, lying down and walking wrongly begin to take their toll on our body. One area that alerts us over time about its impending problem is our back. And most times the pain is focused around the ThoracoLumbar area of the back, for us lay men its that is the Lower back area.

Hi there your best bet is via a local shoe maker working wit insoles to make it according to the child's size.

If that won't fly,

I have some orthotic techs that can produce it for you.
