Medical Negligence In Nigerian University Clinics Has To Stop!!! by Nobody: 2:53am On May 30, 2015
Mayowa Alaran
Justin Ukwu

These are just two (2) in the long list of names of tertiary university students who had died due to the lackadaisical attitude of most health workers in the university clinics.

Would you like it if you went to a clinic for treatment and not attended to? Or would you love it if you had kids who really needed medical attention but are ignored for one reason or another? I know a lot of you would criticize this write up but please think and put yourselves in the shoes of the deceaseds' family.

6th May,2015 - People cheering in different parts of the world, not for any other reason apart from the match being played between the two (2) greatest team on the planet, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich FC...But this was not the case in the university of Ibadan as one of their students slumped and collapsed while watching the same match.
Students from different corners of the viewing centre started bringing up suggestions, "help him get up",one said. Another shouted,"call for the school clinic's ambulance as we might not make it overthere if we carry him ourselves". Dialing competition began to the phone lines of the school clinic to request for an ambulance. After waiting for about 8-10minutes without seeing signs of any ambulance even though the clinic was in close proximity, the students chose to find another means of conveying their unconscious friend to the clinic. On getting to the clinic, the nurses on duty refused to attend to the unconscious student because his clinic card couldn't be produced,I'm wondering, why not save his life first and ask questions later? Well, that was not the case on that fateful night as the nurses totally refused until his clinic card was produced after a very long time. He was checked and showed no vital signs. I mean, after wasting so much time initially at the clinic with the nurses refusing to check him,the poor boy died. After a few days of student protests, order was restore to the campus with the VC releasing a press statement to exonorate the school clinic in some way. A promising young mind was forgotten and another name was added to the list of neglected medical patients left to die. What a wicked world!!!

26th May,2015 - This will always be a day to remember in the family of Mrs Ukwu,a single mother, her daughter, Miss Eileen Ukwu, and all other members of their family. However, the day would not be remembered for good, but would be remembered as the day which death chose to rob them of Mr Justin Yves Ukwu, who was a brilliant 200L student of International studies and Diplomacy at Benson Idahosa University,Benin city.
Three days prior to his death,Mr Justin reported to the school clinic because he was sick. He was admitted without any medical examination being conducted, drips were administered and he was forgotten on his bed as the medical personnels on duty chose to ignore him, with his ailment left undiagnosed. On the fateful day,the negligent nurse on duty strolled to where Mr. Justin's bed was and saw him, almost lifeless, and that was when she regained the common sense that had eluded her before. Mr Justin was rushed to the school's apex hospital but it was too late, after a while,he was pronounced dead. His death could have been avoided if proper examinations had been conducted and followed up by the entire medical team of the school clinic. In addition to the negligence,it was gathered that the nurses were even rude to friends who tried to visit the deceased while he was on sick bed. Another set of protests, new cover ups would soon be made available by the school management.

Nigerian students are tired of being neglected when it comes to medical issues in their various university clinics. This is an all out call to various student bodies out there. Take up this movement,we don't want to die!!! We want to be properly taken care of! Even though it might be a little absurd but we want justice for victims of medical negligence in Nigeria. We want compensation for their families. We want official apology from the right body. We want assurance that cases like this won't happen again. We want reasonable and reliable medical personnels in out clinics, not just some lazy, old and incompetent bunch of people. We want justice4mayowa, we want #Justice-4-justin.

What a sad story! May their souls rest in peace.

The FG through the ministry of health has passed a law mandating every tertiary institution to key into the NHIS for all students. This is to curb this kind of avoidable death and pain. I am still in awe how some school management do not want to take advantage of this noble scheme.

*sigh* Nigerian students cannot afford to be silent anymore. The problem with such sad stories is that crying over them is like crying over split milk. The families would be offered condolences like it will bring back the dead and then the clinics keep on doing what they feel like. No heads will roll for the snatching of promising lifes and measures will probably still not be put in place to forestall similar future occurrences sad

I get pissed every single time I read something like this. angry

Children are sent to school to learn,The Universities owe them a duty of care,These children are left to die by the university authorities...because we keep silent.Medical Negligence is endemic in Nigeria...because we keep accepting it.These boys did not have to die this way...
Every life is precious...Let us call & hold the University Autorities & Medical profession to account...let us show them that there are consequences for Neglect. No family should go through this type of carelessness.
Universities & Medical professionals are NOT above the law...#Justice 4Justin.

My dear, it's quite unfortunate.

RIP to the dead.

The truth is that the biggest challenge is that many universities neglect the importance of a well equipped and well managed clinic.

Someone has pointed out the reluctance of many of them joining and benefiting from the largely available health insurance schemes.
Also many universities don't keep adequate manpower there, and as such the disaster is seen in times of trouble.

I'm not exonerating some health workers who don't put in their best in such clinics but we must get the foundations right.

You've raised a great point and I think Aluta movements in our universities should ensure that we have a well run clinic or give the respective management no peace till the anomaly is corrected.

Can we have this on frontage please?

If the school's medical centre isn't functioning they should stop collecting medical fees and alert the world they have a non-existent clinic.

#JUSTICE FOR JUSTIN
THE TRUE ACCOUNT FROM JUSTIN'S MOTHER
My son, Yves Justin Nnamdi Ukwu died on the 26th of may, 2015. He was a 200 level undergraduate student of international studies and diplomacy at the Benson Idahosa University, Benin, at the Health Plus Medical Center of the institution.
He was admitted at the medical centre on Sunday, May 24th, 2015, drips administered, no food given despite pleas from his school friends for food and further treatment/attention for him. His last words to me were Okay, Good night, I’m very tired now, at 21:20pm on Monday May 25th, 2015.
On Tuesday, May 26th, 2015 at 9:12am a phone call was placed to me from 08188781415 informing me that my son was being moved from the school Medical Center to their affiliated specialist Clinic, Faith Mediplex, to receive blood transfusion AND would be discharged that evening. I was assured that his condition was not serious and then proceeded to give his medical history of malaria spleen.
Unfortunately, from 12:17pm that day, I started receiving calls from Dr. Idahosa of Faith Mediplex, Benin, she said that my son’s condition was serious. I arrived Benin at 17:17hrs from Port Harcourt, traced Faith Mediplex and left unattended for over 30minutes. After much insistence on my part, I was eventually informed that my son had died of a sickle cell crisis at 2:15pm on that day, May 26, 2015. How can this have happened when my son was NOT a sickle cell patient? My genotype is AS while his father is AA.
QUESTIONS
1)Why was my son, Justin, kept on drips without food for his entire stay in the school medical centre despite the pleas of his friends?
2)The minimum PVC level required for blood transfusion in a human being is 45, why was Justin Ukwu still left unattended to when his PVC level dropped to 27?
3)Why was no call put through to his next of kin through out his ill health till 9:12am on 26/05/2015 when he was dying AND even then, the true state of his health NOT divulged?
4)Why was he denied proper medical attention? Even if he was a sickler, was the treatment given to him the right treatment for someone in that condition? Starvation, abandonment, verbal and physical abuse are definitely NOT integral parts in managing any illness.
5)Why is there such a concerted attempt to distort/deny that such an act of criminal negligence occurred from the primary care givers, the marina Consultants (HMO) and the Benson Idahosa University, Benin which has a chief Medical Director and whose parent body runs a specialist clinic, Faith Mediplex, which has surgeons, nurses and other medical staff who could have been seconded to the University Medical Centre.
My questions must be answered and until they are, I will continue to fight for justice for my beloved, caring, gentle son, Yves Justin Nnamdi Ineye Ukwu.
This tragedy must never reoccur,
# Justice for Justin.
Signed: Margaret Nnennaya Ekpeyong Ukwu MOTHER.

Mods, I think this should hit front page undecided
I don't know details about the second case, as one cannot rightly decipher the truth, it's almost impossible to believe that a patient was left unattended to without food and care but the first case seems like a huge possibility in a Nigerian University clinic angry

8-10 minutes and an ambulance could not arrive? wth angry
Asking for clinic card in an unconscious patient angry

My sincere condolences to the family of the deceased! cry

@Seun, Lalasticala, Ishilove etc....if there's anyway these cases can be verified, I think this deserves front page. This definitely has to stop!

Quite unfortunate and pathetic cases. May God grant their souls eternal peace in His bosom.

Please permit me to point out some perceived misconceptions in your story , if you don't mind :
1. Justin was admitted without any medical examination conducted on him. This can't be true in my opinion because he couldn't have been the only patient that was seen at the clinic that night. But there was definitely an indication for him to be admitted. This is usually obtained after thorough physical examination . Except if u were trying to imply that no tests were conducted on the boy ; in any case most clinics as such lack the facility to run 24 hrs laboratory and diagnostic services.
2. Justin was refused food all through his stay at the clinic. This may have been possible ONLY if he was unconscious most of the time. In such instance the drips would suffice because attempting to feed him would only result to more danger.
3. No qualified medical doctor/health professional orders for blood transfusion at PCV of 45% ; rare even at 27% as claimed by Justin ' s mum.
4. Maybe the nurses in the first case u highlighted insisted on seeing the patient's hospital card b4 attending to him so as to see if he had any history of severe medical condition that could not be handled there at the clinic and might need immediate referral to a bigger facility.
By and large , I'm not attempting to exonerate any of the accused health workers of contempt/negligence to duty ; it's just that both sides of the story have to be heard b4 reaching conclusions.

BARELY A DAY AFTER MY INITIAL WRITE UP ON THE GBENGA ALARAN AND JUSTIN YVES UKWU CASE, I HEARD THAT ANOTHER STUDENT OF UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN DIED AS A RESULT OF NEGLECT AND REFUSAL BY HEALTH WORKERS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN TEACHING HOSPITAL TO ATTEND TO HER BECAUSE THEY ARE ON STRIKE.

IMAGINE, A TEACHING HOSPITAL IS ALSO PART OF THOSE WHO CHOSE TO IGNORE PATIENTS JUST BECAUSE THEY SAY THEY ARE ON STRIKE. I THOUGHT DOCTORS AND NURSES ARE MEANT TO SAVE LIVES FIRST AND ASK QUESTIONS LATER, GUESS I WAS WRONG!
HOW LONG WILL THESE CONTINUE? HOW LONG WILL WE CONTINUE TO LOSE LIVES OF INNOCENT INDIVIDUALS, BE IT STUDENTS OR NOT?

WE WANT REFORMS, WE KEPT ON CLAMOURING FOR CHANGE BUT THAT IS NOT HAPPENEING. WHO KNOWS WHO THE NEXT VICTIM MIGHT BE?

NOW PEOPLE GET SCARED ABOUT GOING TO HOSPITALS FOR CHECKUPS BECAUSE MOST OF THE HEALTH WORKERS ACT LIKE “TIN GODS”. IF IT’S NOT VERBAL ABUSE, IT’S GOING TO BE REFUSAL OF ATTENTION. ALL THESE HAS TO STOP, AND IT HAS TO START NOW, OR ELSE NIGERIAN STUDENT MIGHT BE FORCED TO RTAKE LAWS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS AND THE RESUT OF THAT WOULD BE FATAL.

CALLING FOR ALL HANDS TO BE ON DECK, ALL FORMS OF INJUSTICE BEING METTED OUT ON HOSPITAL PATIENTS HAS TO STOP, NOW!!!
MEANWHILE,I'LL GET MORE INFO ON THE UNILORIN STUDENT'S CASE.

We are losing a generation to the indifference & callousness of those that should have their interest at heart.
Our higher institutions with all the facilities at their disposal have no regard for the lives of their students.
How many more horror stories do we have to hear before we accept & realise that there is a serious problem? Who has to die from neglect before we say enough is enough?? These students that have lost their lives are our sons, daughters, cousins, nieces, family friends..."They are ALL of US"
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do,NOTHING! !!"
Let us do something & call these institutions & the medical profession to account.
Every life matters.
