Some Nigerians in the United States are coming back home following the impact the global financial crisis is having on the American economy.

A Nigerian living in New York, Paul Onuka, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in New York that his family of four was relocating from U.S. to Nigeria.

He said they were doing so after he and his wife lost their jobs.

"Initially, we have no desire to go home, as we are enjoying our jobs here, but now we are going back to Nigeria because of the present situation," Onuka said.

Another Nigerian immigrant, who simply identified himself as Kanu, said: "The feeling in the city is that if foreigners have lost their jobs, then they should leave the U.S. to save themselves from unnecessary hardship.’’

He also said the economic situation in New York was "very serious and affecting those of us not working."

He said many Nigerians and other Africans had recently lost their jobs and were finding it difficult to make ends meet.

"Here, it is bills upon bills which you have to pay or the services and utilities will be switched off,’’ Kanu, who formerly worked at Circuit City, a household retail store in New York, added.

The company had recently closed down its stores, attributing it to the current economic crisis.

Some Nigerians, who lost their jobs or businesses have resorted to either driving taxis or engaging in other menial work to cope with the situation.

Similarly, some Nigerians in the Diaspora were recently sighted at the Nigerian Consulate in New York processing their old or expired passports for the new e-passport to enable them to travel to Nigeria.

An official of the Nigerian Consulate in New York, who preferred anonymity, told NAN that the consular section has recently witnessed an upsurge in the number of Nigerians in the U.S. processing travel documents to return home.

See. . . . . this is the same question I have asked on two threads now. Nigerians are running here. . . Nigerians are running there. . . . makes you wonder if this is not the usual we see every single day.

Problem with these claims is that no actual data available to measure these moves. Someone will come on here to claim that because 5 Nigerians he/she knows have moved back to Nigeria, that means it is a fact that Nigerians are moving to Nigeria because of the recession. Nigerians are also flocking Dubai for shopping, so then you wonder if the recession is even hitting them down in Nigeria. Then you read that Nigerians are fleeing from Nigeria to Ghana, Vietnam and you wonder why these same Nigerians are running all over the place. roflmao!!!

In my opinion, I think it is all nothing but hype; Nigerians have always moved around. All the news of Fleeing and Flocking is all sensational news and nothing more.
