There has been a lot of talk this week in our media about future Australia citizen's being required to have to sit a written English and an oral comprehension test before they are granted citizenship.
The reason it has been proposed is because of concerns of familes of people arriving and adding nothing to society because they can't speak any English (costing us money to support)
At the momment it is not uncommon to see a family of people in which only the children speak English and are required to do all the parents shopping etc.

Do you think it's a good or bad idea to have a test to determine if your English is good enough to function in society?

Well, i will say itz good and itz also not good.

Considering their objective for conducting the test, it is a good idea
but in a situation where there aren't other methods of screening, it might not really be a good idea

it would be great if they add other tests besides the language test.
Some people who may not be able to speak their language could help them positively in some other way.

It's also supposed to have a section on Australian values as well.

The language test is important to anyone wishing to settle in a new country and i am not against any country trying to make people have a basic knowledge of the language before they can be granted citizenship.

If you're going to be a citizen of a country then you should be able to relate and communicate with your fellow citizens, it goes a long way to fostering integration.
