The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission has set in motion the process for the downward review of the existing salaries and allowances of political, public and judicial office holders in the country.

Chairman of the organisation, Mr. Elias Mbam, on Wednesday inaugurated the committee charged with the responsibility of reviewing the Remuneration Act 2008.

The Remuneration Act of 2008 prescribes the salaries and allowances for political, public and judicial office holders.

Mbam urged the committee to be conscious of the prevailing economic situation and the need to reduce cost of governance so as to free more funds for development, according to a statement made available to our correspondent by Head of Public Relations of RMAFC, Mr. Ibrahim Mohammed.

He also explained that the commission was constitutionally empowered to undertake the review of the remuneration packages as might be required from time to time so as to reflect current economic realities; advise federal and state governments on monetisation policies; and generate cost of living indices for revision of allowances among others.

Mbam charged the committee to undertake wide consultations with all critical stakeholders including all arms of government of the federation, the national and state assemblies, state and local governments, professional economic bodies, the organised labour, the academia, the media and the Nigerian public in general so as to enrich the process.

He reminded the committee members of the need to ensure that the review effectively minimised wastages and abuses and ensured prudent management of resources as well.

The committee is expected to holistically review the existing Remuneration Act; identify areas of wastages and abuse, examine the implementation of the monetisation policy by Ministries, Departments and Agencies and advise on appropriate remuneration for political, public and judicial officers commensurate with the work they do, Mohammed said.

Mbam stressed that the exercise, which is expected to reduce cost of governance, was line with the current realities where the economy was characterised by inflation and downturn in international oil prices among others.

He said the work was envisaged to be completed before the end of September.

In his remarks after the inauguration, Chairman of the Remuneration Committee of the commission, Mr. Abdullahi Inde, assured the chairman that the committee would do a thorough job of the task assigned to it.

He called on Nigerians to show support and pray for the committee.

How 469 people feel/felt its ok for this kind of obscene salary & allowances (+ countless "tiffing" ) to accrue to them out of over a 170m people in the face of overwhelming poverty in the land is straight up Ungodly.

I'm still wondering, if the whole country was in a state of coma while David Mark arm twisted the RMAFC into increasing the NASS budget from 50b per annum to 150b without public outcry...

Nigerians are waiting for them to resist this in the face of depleted reserves, dwindling oil prices and a weak Naira so we can occupy them ....

Sai Baba too sure, quietly enpowering institutions to do the needful.. God bles him for us.

The allowances are the problem. Please, they need to stop providing them with cars, maid service and all their comforts. Let them use their salary to fund their extravagant lifestyles. If they dont like it, they can reject their mandate. The salary is not bad. Its the allowances that are the problem. If they think they need aides to say aye or nay, let them pay for that out of their pocket. Foolish thieves. undecided

This is one of the main reasons why no reasonable person would want Saraki to preside over the Senate.

He said the work was envisaged to be completed before the end of September. According to the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission informs that President Buhari will earn a monthly salary of N3, 514, 705, his allowance N1,757,350.50( 50% of his salary).

Nigerians should please keep their eyes on the NASS and watch their reactions.

To me Saraki as of yesterday is now David mark's stooge. And David mark wasn't happy during the last retreat held by the PDP in Port Harcourt, when this same suggestion was made and he didn't hide it in his remark. His position and that of Saraki, Ekweremadu and indeed other members both in the APC and PDP may not be different.

Again, the major obstacle here is the NASS and so Nigerians must stand with the executive (PMB) and the committee under RMAFC to see to the end of this injustice.

Let's hope the lawmakers accept the salary cut. However, the basic salary should not be the issue but the allowances which are outrageously higher than the basic salary.

you cannot change the salary of the legislators now.
that will be like moving the goal posts during a fooball match!
some of them contested because of the salary and terms and conditions of service!
you cannot unilaterally change the condition of service just like that!
this rmfac should wait till 2019 before they can touch legislator salary!

I love how Buhari is running his programmes through the institutions without creating tarnishing the image of the presidency. This way, it a uniform policy for everyone and not aimed at anyone or particular region.

God bless the President and grant him more wisdom to clean the mess of PDP.

You are looking to instigate World War III brother. cheesy

Silently but steadily, the president has embarked upon a campaign that would see to a systemic change rather than a window dressing. Make the system unpalatable for those who would kill or die to get elected or appointed. It is about time we made public officers act like servants of the public.

Soon, we wouldn't be having situations where "thanksgiving" masses are held in our churches when men get appointed. When you see that you are going there to "serve and suffer", I see no reason you should be "thanking God" with a special occasion. cheesy

Nice one Baba. Keep it coming. The Lord is indeed your strength.

If members of the NASS pass as law a review of their salaries downward, it is done!

If the goal posts can change in the middle of the match to review their salaries upward, what moral high ground are you on to say same goal posts cannot change in the middle of the match to review their salaries downward!

That's the beauty of buhari way of doing thing he allows things to take their course by themselves. I was at KRPC (kaduna refinery) and saw some foreign guys moving around when I inquired I head they were the original company that biult the refineries and are making initial assessments. A lot of things seem to be going on in the background.

See how efficient even our same old army has become in coordinating regional response to boko haram. I just pray the party doesn't derail the guys focus.

This is why Nigerians voted GMB. We are waiting and watching.

From the events so far, it is better GMB alligns himself with the masses instead of politicians who are bent on betraying him when the chips are down. He should learn from the mistake of GEJ that "one with the masses is a majority". GEJ thought that "one with politicians is a majority". I bet he knows better now.
