- Many scientific studies confirm that the best food for fasting people is “dates” with water because it contains all needed vitamins, sugars and minerals, hence the prophet says in the prophetic hadith ”when you break your fasting eat dates and if you don’t have dates drink water”{narrated by Abu- Dawood}.

Ramadan is a very special month for the Muslims, as in it Muslims around the world perform various types of worship, the most important of them being fasting. This fasting of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, mandatory upon all adolescents and adults who have the ability. Ramadan is also the month in which the first revelation came to the Prophet Muhammad, and thus is called the “Month of the Quran”. During this month, there is a noticeable change in people’s lives as well as societies. This article will describe a typical day of a Muslim during this month of forgiveness.

- Dear beloved, fasting is not just a worship …it is a treatment and healing for many diseases …it is a renewal method for our body cells and the activityof the entire body…as a result it is to renew our entire life and when we realize benefits offasting we really touch its sweetness, Allah Almighty says: (O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun) {Sûrat Al-Baqarah-The Cow-verse 183 }.

- The scientists confirm that the best cure for the accumulation of poisons in the body is the fasting because it helps in cleaning the cells from these poisons ,prophet Mohamed peace be upon him says :” fasting is a protection” {narrated by Muslim}. Indeed it is a protection from many diseases by increasing the activity of our cells.

- Physicians assure that fasting activates our immune system …as the resistance of the body increases against all diseases. The immune system is a group of soldiers who guards the body from many viruses and harmful bacteria. Hence fasting is an effective weapon to help the body to defend itself.

- A medical fact: fasting is a main reason behind the long life!!!! Many non-Muslims had authored many books about the different benefits of fasting and they concluded that frequent fasting people lives longer than those who don’t fast!! Glory to Allah Almighty who prescribed the fasting for us as He Almighty says: (O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun){Sûrat Al-Baqarah-The Cow-verse 183 }.

Every Muslim who is adult and in possession of his faculties must fast Ramadan. They are exempted, however, in the following cases:

1. Women in menstruation, or in child-birth bleeding.
2. Persons on sick bed, or on a journey.

The Qur'an requires Muslims to fast during the month of Ramadan from sunrise to sunset.

However, there are exceptions to this. One of them is that people who are ill or have medical conditions do not have to fast. This includes people with diabetes.

As more than a billion Muslims begin the observation this week of the holy month of Ramadan, Wael Mousfar will be among them. Mousfar, 62, is a Type 2 diabetic, so marking the holy month with the customary fasting during daylight can play havoc with his blood sugar and insulin levels. But Mousfar said he’s not worried.
“I will be fasting for sure,” he told ABC News. “I’ve been doing it all my all life. I would not stop during Ramadan, the fast.”
Mousfar, of New York City, has been a diabetic for over 20 years, but said his diabetes hasn’t stopped him from observing Ramadan.“I really look at fasting as spiritual,” Mousfar said. “It’s body and soul work together.

- O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint. [Quran 2:183]

- Jewish: Yom Kippur ("Day of Atonement"wink is the last of the Ten Days of Repentance observed on the 10th of Tishri.
- On that day, it is forbidden to eat, drink, wash, wear leather, or have sexual relations. In addition, prohibitions on labor similar to those on the Sabbath are in force.[3]
- It should also be noted that Moses (peace be upon him) is recorded in the Torah to have fasted:
- "And he was there with the Lord 40 days and 40 nights, he neither ate bread not drank water." (Exodus 34:28)
-
- Christian For Catholics Christians, Lent is the major season of fasting, imitative of the forty-day fast of Jesus (peace be upon him).
- In the fourth century it was observed as six weeks of fasting before Easter or before Holy Week. It was adjusted to forty days of actual fasting in most places in the seventh century.[4]
-
- Jesus (peace be upon him) is recorded in the Gospels to have fasted like Moses. "And he fasted 40 days and 40 nights, and afterward he was hungry." (Matthew 4:2 & Luke 4:2)
-
- It is in this context God states in the Quran:
-
- "O believers! Fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you in order that you become more conscious of God."
- [Noble Quran 2:183]
-
- Righteous Deeds Among the Best Righteous Deeds
-
- Although in most religions, fasting is for expiation of sin or atonement for sin, in Islam it is primarily to bring one closer to God, as stated in the above-mentioned verse.
-
- Since, God-consciousness is the prerequisite for righteousness, great stress is placed on fasting in Islam.
-
- Therefore, it is not surprising to find that when Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was asked "Which is the best deed?" He replied, "Fasting, for there is nothing equal to it."
-
-
-
- Ramadan is a month of fasting and prayers for the Muslims. The fast consists of total abstinence from food and drink from dawn to dusk. There is, however, a greater significance to fasts than mere abstinence from eating and drinking. The real objective of fasts is to inculcate in man the spirit of abstinence from sins and of cultivation of virtue. Thus the Qur'an declares that the fasts have been prescribed with a view to developing piety in man

- One of the marvelous facts is that eating dates organize functions of the liver and helps to getting rid of poisons. When a person breaks the fasting by eating dates it considered to be the best natural medicine to maintain the liver from the accumulated poisons. Also the researchers confirm that eating dates continually prevents from liver diseases. Now we understand why the prophet peace be upon him used to break his fasting by dates and also he used to eat dates every morning!!!

- The scientists found that fasting doesn’t harm diabetics as long as they are under medical supervision but it helps them to be treated. They say the reason behind that is the good and stable psychological status of the fasting diabetics as they are surrounded by calm and peace where the disorders and anxiety are far away, and that helps in the effective organizing of the work of different organs such as functions of the pancreas, Allah Almighty says: (And that you fast, it is better for you if only you know) {Sûrat Al-Baqarah- The Cow-verse 184}.

- Many scientific studies showed that fasting is a free way to renew and activate cells of the body as the fasting doubles the life of these cells! Hence the scientists confirm that there is a direct relation between fasting and the long life and good health. Fasting is the best way to clean the cells which delays aging.

- Many chronic and high blood pressure patients are treated by chemical medicines with limited results. But fasting is a good treatment for those patients as recent studies proved that giving up eating and drinking for limited periods purifies the body from the poisons and reduce the cholesterol and the blood fats. Therefore, fasting is an ideal treatment for some chronic diseases, here Allah Almighty says: (And that you fast, it is better for you if only you know) {Sûrat Al-Baqarah- The Cow-verse).

There are many Prophetic narrations which clarify the days that are desirable for a Muslim to fast; they are as follows:

1. Six days from the month of Shawwaal: Abu Ayyoob Al ‘Ansaari may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “He who fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwaal, this is as if he fasted for the whole year.” [Ahmad, Abu Daawood and At-Tirmithi]

Three days of every month: Abu Hurayrah and Abu Tharr may Allaah be pleased with them said: “TheProphet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) advised us never to quit (praying) the two Rak'ahs of Ad-Dhuha, and the Witr (prayer) before going to bed (at night); and to fast three days of every month. It is desirable if these days are the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth days (of each lunar month).” [Muslim]

God says in the Quran:
“Fasting has been prescribed for you as it has been prescribed for those before you in order that you become of the God-conscious.” (Quran 2:183)

During Ramadan, Muslims try to adhere to three types of worship - three of the five pillars of the Islamic faith.

The first is Sawm, ie fasting. Throughout the month, most Muslims refrain from eating or drinking between dawn and sunset.

The second is Zakat, which is charity - they are encouraged to give 2.5% of their annual income during Ramadan.

The third is salat, which is to pray. Muslims are encouraged to pray five times a day. Traditionally, many also attend additional communal prayers, called Taraweeh, which take place every evening.

Muslims are also encouraged to read the entire Quran during the month of Ramadan. This is a time of spiritual concentration and deep contemplation.

The night of Al-Qadr is the most virtuous night of the year. Allah says in the Qur’an: “We revealed it on the night of power [that is, Al-Qadr]. What will tell you what the night of power is? It is better than a thousand months.” Any action therein, for example, reciting the Qur’an, making remembrance of Allah, and so on, is better than acting for one thousand months which do not contain the night of Al-Qadr. It is preferred to seek this night:

It is preferred to seek this night during the last ten nights of Ramadan, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, strove his best in seeking it during that time. We have already mentioned that the Prophet would stay up during the last ten nights, would wake his wives, and then would remain apart from them to worship.

Scholars hold different opinions as to the night, which is the night of Al-Qadr.
Which night is Laylat ul Qadr?

Scholars hold different opinions as to the night, which is the night of Al-Qadr. Some are of the opinion that it is the 21st, some say the 23rd, others say the 25th and still others say it is the 29th. Some say that it varies from year to year but it is always among the last ten nights of Ramadan. Most scholars, though, vouch for the 27th. Ahmad recorded, with a Authentic chain, from Ibn Umar that the Prophet said: “He who likes to seek that night should do so on the 27th. ‘Ubayy ibn Kab said: By Allah, and there is no god but Him, it is during Ramadan-and He swore to that-and by Allah, I know what night it is. It is the night during which the Prophet ordered us to make prayers, the night of the 27th. Its sign is that the sun rises in the morning white and without any rays.” (Related by Muslim, Abu Dawud, Ahmad, and by At-Tirmidhi who called it Authentic.)
Praying and making supplications during the night of Al-Qadr:

Al-Bukhari and Muslim record from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever prays during the night of Al-Qadr with faith and hoping for its reward will have all of his previous sins forgiven.”

As to the supplication during the night of Al-Qadr, `A’ishah said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah: ‘O Messenger of Allah, if I know what night is the night of qadr, what should I say during it?’ He said: ‘Say: O Allah, You are pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me.’ ” (Related by Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and by At-Tirmidhi, who called it Authentic.)
