Warri Refinery Begins Production In Two Weeks-daily INDEPENDENT by handie(m): 8:06am On Jun 18, 2015
• To Produce 4.6m Litres Per Day Of Petrol •
As 11 Ships With Fuel Arrive Lagos
• Others Expected

Strong indications emerged Tuesday, that the
Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company
(WRPC) would within a fortnight begin
production at 50 per cent installed capacity.
Daily Independent investigation revealed that
the first consignment of crude oil for
production at the company’s bay arrived on
Monday, a development said to have sent
members of staff of the company into wide
jubilation after seeing barrels of crude oil
being discharged for the first time in more
than two years.
A barrel of crude would produce 73.8 liters of
petrol when refined. This means that the Warri
Refinery, with an installed capacity of 125,000
barrels per day would now be producing 62,500
barrels per day (at 50 per cent capacity),
translating to 4,612,500 litres of Premium
Motor Spirit (petrol) per day.
Group Managing Director of the Nigerian
National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC),
Joseph Dawha had last week announced that
the Port-Harcourt Refinery would next month
commence production of petroleum products.
A source close to the WRPC who spoke on
condition of anonymity, confirmed that some
barrels of crude have been received in
preparation for full production.
The source who added that the establishment
received crude oil consignment last in 2012,
noted that crude oil supply to the refinery was
stalled by the immediate past government.
This, the source added, resulted in massive
importation of refined products by the Federal
Government in preparation for their full
privatisation.
He further disclosed that all the machines for
the take off of production were also last Sunday
switched on in readiness for production works
in the company.
According to the source: “Yes, it is true that the
Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company
limited is set to commence the refining of
petroleum products. The production will start
within the next 14 days from now. All the
production machines were since last Sunday
switched on in readiness for the production.
“I also want to inform you that the
management has received crude oil for that
purpose this week Monday. For over two years
now we have not received crude oil as it was
being sent to foreign refineries from where
they were been imported back to the country
as refined products.
“This started soon after the alleged planned
privatization of the refineries by the
immediate past administration which was also
said to have targeted the sales to its selected
cronies thereby placing the workers of the
refining and petrochemical company on
permanent state of redundancy for the past
two years,” he added.
The source also alleged that minor turnaround
maintenance was being carried out by those
who had been allocated the refinery but was
immediately put on hold soon after the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost the
presidential election.
It was however gathered that technical staff of
the company who have been idle are already
on hand, anxiously warming up to resume
production as the management is determined
and working hard to ensure that the anticipated
two-week target is met.
NNPC has four refineries, two in Port Harcourt,
and one each in Kaduna and Warri. The
refineries have a combined installed capacity of
445,000 barrels per day. A comprehensive
network of pipelines and depots strategically
located throughout Nigeria link these
refineries.
Meanwhile, 11 ships laden with petroleum
products and other items have arrived Lagos
Ports and waiting to berth.
This, according to the News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN), was contained in a daily publication of
the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA)- Shipping
Position, made available in Lagos on Tuesday.
According to the document, three of the ships
are waiting to discharge petrol, while two are
loaded with fresh fish, base oil, aviation fuel,
bulk sugar and crude palm oil.
The report also indicated that 36 other ships
were being expected at the ports from June 16
to June 30, noting that the ships were laden
with petrol, diesel, kerosene, fresh fish,
general cargo, buckwheat, containers and steel
products, adding that the other items on board
were bulk clinker, ethanol, bulk sugar, buthane
gas and base oil.
The publication also explained that 22 other
ships laden with diesel, base oil, fertiliser,
buckwheat, bulk rice, gypsum, truck, buthane
container, fresh fish and bulk sugar are
presently discharging at the ports.

GEJ remains the best we ever had.

Without noise and propaganda he attacked the root of Nigeria's problems.

The enemies of the country utilized propaganda to oust a working govt. We missed a great opportunity with GEJ and if the current Govt must succeed, their template cannot be far off

Imagine if we were self sufficient in Agriculture, automobile/accessories and refined petroleum products. ..... Our economy would have blossomed and naira would have significantly appreciated.

These are the three key sectors we spend our foreign exchange on. GEJ narrowed down on these sectors cos that is where the prosperity and employment of Nigerians lie. The agricultural sector is greatly improved, the car assembly plants are back and functional, the refineries which were dead for years are nearly complete for production.

With these three sustained, we won't be trading a lot with dollars and the demand would drop thereby strengthening the naira

Now the dumb ones amongst us have returned us back to the status quo. No direction......

However I must state that the refineries needs to be handed over to corporations to whom refining is core business. Govt has no business running those refineries otherwise it will go the way of NEPA, NITEL, Nigerian Railways, Nigerian Airways, NNPC etc.

Govt can go into joint venture partnership with major refining brands who will operate the facilities like is done in the upstream.

Too little too late. Perception is reality. Majority of nigerians perceived GEJ as a good man but a weak clueless leader presiding over the most corrupt government in Nigeria's history

Guess what? I don't blame them!

Take it or leave it, all these will go down as PMB's achievements. From the news, u can deduce that the Refinery wasn't really having any major problem but they prefer to play politics with d issue. Would they have gotten trillions from subsidy had they fixed the refineries? ain't it telling that after just 3 weeks of GEJ leaving, we are talking about two refineries resuming operation? Things are getting better and by God's grace, before Baba's hundred days in office, the security situation will be vastly improved and there will be a vast improvement in the power situation(at least 8 hours a day). Naija, we'll get there

Guy, there was nothing wrong with those refineries not to make them work at all.

GEJ's incompetence and Diezanni and her thieving circle are behind all the non-working of those refineries. Call it sabotage in order to loot us dry and it will be right.

Now, with a no nonsense PMB, everyone is sitting up.

WILL IT SHOCK YOU TO HEAR THAT NNPC HAD NO REFINING OR PRODUCTION PROBLEM....DEZIANI ACTUALLY INSTRUCTED THE TOP DIRECTORS AND ENGINEERS IN NNPC TO HALT THEIR ACTIVITIES COVERTLY TO PAVE WAY FOR SIPHONING SUBSIDY MONEY AND PRETENDED THAT THE REFINERIES ARE UNSERVICEABLE EVEN WITH ALL THE MONIES SUNK IN TURN AROUND MAINTENANCE (TAM)......THIS FACT CAME OUT WHEN THE PRESIDENCY ANNOUNCED THE SACKING OF ALL DIRECTORS AND SENIOR ENGINEERS....THERE WAS A PLEA BARGAIN BY THE AFFECTED PERSONNEL WHO PROMISED TO MAKE THE REFINERY WORKING AT 5T LITRES PER DAY AS FROM JULY....THAT IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN EVEN WITHOUT ANY RECENT TAM...!!!
SAME THING GOES TO NEPA.....WE WERE ACTUALLY BEEN DECEIVED BY THE CABALS WHO HAVE BEEN USING THESE PUBLIC COYS AS A CONDUIT PIPE TO OBTAIN FUNDS TO FINANCE POLITICAL PARTY (PDP)...LIYEL IMOKE AND HIS COHORTS WERE DEEPLY INVOLVED IN PHCN SAGA....

Lies and all lies. Do you talk on this matter as an insider or a staff there? The manner of lies and propaganda you and your group peddle on some issues is really disturbing.

It's not GEJ. The cabals held him by his balls and if we had continued with him, same story will be told for another four years.

Nothing much was wrong with all those refineries except that those benefitting from their lack of operation will prefer the status quo.

All these good news is due to PMB's posture because they know he will not accept those useless lies and excuses.

The fear of PMB is the beginning of wisdom indeed.

If something was wrong, and no contract was reported to have been awarded to revamp them (the one reported last time was not concluded), how come they're resuming production in two weeks?

The resumption of activities by these refineries is no coincidence. Work has been ongoing but propaganda blinded illiterate Nigerians

So what,
I am also typing from KRPC, and as I type a team from the company that biult the refineries are on ground doing integrity test.

Fact still remains the previous administration (not necessarily GEJ himself - but he has to take responsibility) delibrately kept our refineries shut down so as fleece the country dry of vital funds (through fake subsidies, round tripping of vessels, unregulated crude oil swaps etc)

Like some one said somewhere, no one has been sacked, no one invited for questioning, neither has the president asked any serious questions (yet), but everyone seems to now know his or her job descriptions, and are carrying out with impeccable alacrity. That's the change we r talking about.
