Uwak begs for Flamingoes, Falconets

Idris Adesina

Super Falcons attacker Cynthia Uwak has called for early preparations of the Flamingoes for their two-legged Jordan 2016 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier against Namibia next month.

She also called for the early preparations for the Falconets for the Papua New Guinea 2016 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup.

Uwak, who spoke with our correspondent online, said adequate preparations were needed by the teams to succeed in their various assignments.

“The Flamingoes have yet to reach the Promised Land but I believe they will overcome their opponents,” she said.

According to the Denmark- based forward said the Falconets have what it takes to win the World Cup, saying being two-time finalists would help them bring the trophy to Africa.

She added that the Flamingoes should not underrate their opponents as there are no more minnows in women’s football on the continent.

Uwak said, “The Flamingoes can qualify for the World Cup but they need to play their best in their two matches. They should not underrate the Namibians because no team is small in women’s football and every country wants to beat Nigeria.

“For the Falconets, I believe it’s high time we brought the trophy to Africa. The Falconets have more experience than other African countries to win the trophy for Africa.

“Playing in the final of a tournament on two different occasions will give our country an edge over others that have yet to reach the final.”

Namibia/Nigeria: Fearless Young Gladiators Ready for Nigeria

By Sheefeni Nikodemus

Fear is not a factor for the Young Gladiators as they brace to face powerhouse Nigeria in a Fifa under-17 World Cup first round first leg qualifier in Abuja on Saturday.

Namibia's ambitious youngsters will bank on their resolve to make up for inexperience when they face a formidable Nigerian side which reached the quarter-finals of the last World Cup in Costa Rica before coming unstuck 3-0 against eventual runners-up Spain.

The Gladiators left Windhoek for Abuja on Wednesday.
"The team is doing fantastic. They are upbeat and in good shape," said Jacqui Shipanga from the Namibia Football Association Women's Desk.

The return leg is set for 22 January at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek.

"The girls received all the necessary support from the association to prepare for this match. We have been in camp throughout the festive season, so I'm really happy about the team's condition," Shipanga said.

Namibia completed a 3-2 aggregate victory over Botswana in mid-December in the preliminary qualification round to set up the match against Nigeria, who received a bye into the first round given their superior ranking.

Nigeria's Flamingos have been in camp since 3 December and have qualified for and participated in every edition of the Fifa u-17 women's World Cup finals since the competition was launched in New Zealand in 2008.

The west Africans reached the quarter-finals in Trinidad and Tobago (2010), Azerbaijan (2012) and Costa Rica (2014).

"We know we are up against a very strong opponent. Half of their team was in Costa Rica. They have experience and are favourites - there's no doubt about that," Shipanga said.

"But there is no element of fear of Nigeria in this team. The girls are excited and are really looking forward to testing themselves against a team of Nigeria's calibre.

We want to go there and get a positive result," said Shipanga.
The fifth Fifa u-17 Women's World Cup finals will be held in Jordan from 30 September to 21 October.

Namibia have retained the same team that faced Botswana, with only defensive stalwart Jasmine Baas likely to sit out the tie in Abuja due to injury.

The team is as follows:
Goalkeepers- Batista Kasume and Vitjitua Tijvau (Galz & Goals)

Defenders- Jasmine Baas (St. Paul's College), Veronica Van Wyk (Omaheke Queens), Anna Shaende, Vanessa !Noreses, Sharon Pieter and Helena Shuumbwa (Galz & Goals), Selma Enkali (Swakopmund FC)

Midfielders- Ignacia Haoses (Tura Magic), Beverly Uueziua, Asteria Angula, Ashley Solomons, Shanice Daries and Mbitjita Mungunda (Galz & Goals)

Strikers- Julia Rutjindo (Galz & Goals), Yvonne Kooper (Tura Magic), Kylie Van Wyk (Swakopmund FC) and Christa Januarie and Christophine Hanse (Mariental) and Kylie Styles (Karasburg).

FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Qualifier: Nigeria’s Flamingos crush Namibia
By Tunde Eludini

The Nigeria National Women’s U-17 team, the Flamingos on Saturday at the Abuja National Stadium beat their counterparts from Namibia 4-0 to set the right tone for their World Cup qualification quest.

Two goals from Rasheedat Ajibade and one each from Cynthia Aku and Peace Efih saw the Flamingos secure a healthy lead in their second round, first leg clash in the qualification series for the 2016 FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup.

As always, there was a scanty crowd for the women’s game, but the Flamingos were by no means deterred as they started out very well against the Baby Gladiators.

The skipper of the Flamingos, Ajibade, who dazzled the fans present with her deft touches, opened scoring in the 13th minute of the encounter.

Cynthia Aku thereafter doubled the advantage for the Nigeria team 12 minutes to the end of the first half before Efih Peace added another goal to the tally by the stroke of half time with a wonderful effort from 32-meter.

Fans were already expecting an annihilation of the Namibians in the second half but that was not to be as the Flamingos could only score one more goal as Ajibade completed the good work she started in the first half.

With the 4-0 first leg advantage, the Flamingos are expected to pull through even as they go for the second leg encounter on 22nd January in Windhoek.

Namibia Coach Alleges Flamingoes Are Overage

By James Agberebi:
Namibia women's U-17 coach, Melvin Mbakera, has accused the Nigeria U-17 team – the Flamingoes of fielding overage players.

The Flamingoes thrashed Namibia 4-0 in the first leg of the FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup qualifier on Saturday in Abuja.

Mbakera,,speaking via Brila FM, described it as unfair on football.

"The game between U-23 players against U-17 players," Mbakera said of his team's loss to Nigeria's Flamingoes.

"This is not fair and this is the reason why most countries don't want to play in the U-17."

He added:"Nigeria's first goal was brilliant, but their three other goals were as a result of our players errors."

Namibia will hope to overturn the 4-0 first leg deficit when they host the Flamingoes in the reverse fixture in Windhoek.

By Orkula Shaagee
Nigeria's national U-17 women U-17 team top striker Rasheedat Ajibade has declared that the Nigerian side will not sit back to defend its 4-0 win over Namibia in the first leg of the qualifiers for the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup when the two sides clash in the return leg on January 22.

Tough game awaits Flamingoes in Windhoek, says Namibian coach

Abuja - Coach Mervin Mbakera of Namibia on Saturday said his team would give Nigeria’s Flamingoes a good fight in their return match in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

The Flamingoes, Nigeria’s national under-17 women football team, defeated the Baby Gladiators of Namibia 4-0 in a second round first leg match.

The match was played at the Abuja National Stadium’s main bowl, while the second leg match will take place in a fortnight’s time in Windhoek.

Mbakera, who is the Baby Gladiators’ head coach, however told newsmen that while the Nigerian team was stronger than his team, he was sure they were not better.

``I will praise my team because they fought well, even though their efforts could not yield them a good result. But, we will not lose our second leg game.

``We have seen our mistakes, and we will go back home to correct them and prevent the Flamingoes from beating us in the second leg.
The Nigerian team is not super.

``The goals we conceded were due to minor mistake caused by my players,’’ he said.

Speaking also, Bala Nikyu, the Flamingoes’ head coach, praised his girls for a work well done.
``We have been working hard to have this kind of result. We have a long way to go, and we will fight harder to will all our games.

``We will surely take part in the World Cup, by God’s grace,’’ he said.

The 2016 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup is scheduled for Jordan from September 30 to October 21.

I believe that since 1991, the Super a Falcons, Falconets and Flamingoes have only lost one World Cup qualifying match - the SF 0-1 loss to Ghana at the 2002 AWC. Of course, AWC tournaments that didn't serve as WC qualifiers (2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012) aren't included in the stat.

The Flamingoes and Falconets are still unbeaten in their own WC qualifiers since 2002.
That may be a world record.

Bala Nikyu's ladies will contend with South Africa U17 women side in the final qualifying phase if they get past the Baby Gladiators with Zambia pulling out
Nigeria U17 women national team will face South Africa U17 women in the final qualifying round to the Fifa U17 Women's Women Cup in Jordan should they overcome Namibia on aggregate.

President of South Africa Football Association, Danny Jordan confirmed that his side walked over the Zambia who pulled out for some undisclosed reasons.

"We were informed that Zambia, who were supposed to play U17 women's team, have withdrawn from the qualification for the U17 World Cup," Jordan told Kickoff.

"Our (South Africa) team is now throught to the final round of the U17 Women's World Cup qualifiers becuase of this," he said.

Local sources report that the withdrawal of Zamibia was due to various problems in the country, especially financial issues.

In 2013, Zambia defeated South Africa 6-4 on aggregate and made their debut appearance at the Fifa U17 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica.

However, the Flamingoes who recorded a clinical 4-0 victory against Namibia in the first leg, would hope to confirm their progress in the reverse fixture billed for Windhoek on January 24.

Winner between Nigeria and Namibia will now take on South Africa in bid for a place in Jordan scheduled to hold from 30 September to October 21, 2016.

Three finalists in the qualifying tournament will represent Africa at the 2016 Fifa U17 Women's World Cup in Jordan.

Throughout the whole of Jordan, there are currently720registered female players. The figure may sound tremendously modest for a population of over 6.4 million among whom the most popular sport is football, but it embodies a crucial first step for the women’s game in the country.

On 30 September 2016, another historic step will be taken when the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup kicks off in Amman to become the first FIFA women’s tournament ever to be hosted in the Middle East – a region where the cultural barriers for women’s sports events tend to produce meek statistics like the one above.

“This World Cup will raise the profile of women’s football and women’s sports in general. It will send a message that will hopefully ripple across the region - one of girls’ and women’s empowerment and of using football as a platform for social change,” says Samar Nassar, the CEO of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Local Organising Committee.

Nassar is herself a role model when it comes to breaking these barriers and defying gender stereotypes, having taken part in two editions of the Olympic Games as a swimmer, representing Palestine in 2000 and Jordan in 2004.

From the impact that her accomplishments had on young women across the Middle East, she knows exactly how a tournament like the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup comes down to a lot more than just the game. “When young girls are on the pitch here, they are not just kicking the ball for themselves or their countries, but for all the girls out there - for women’s empowerment and for promoting gender equality.”

From the basics
The development of women’s football in Jordan is a solid example to look at, not simply because the country will host the tournament, but given how long a way it has come in a very short period. “Women’s football only started in Jordan in 2005, and still we’re one of the pioneers in west Asia,” saysthe coach of the U-17 national team,Maher Abu Hantash
“It wasa tough start.

The biggest challenge was getting society to accept the idea of girls playing football. When we talked to families, many did not agree with it. But over time, as the game became popular in schools and universities and the national team began to do well, it started to become more normal,” explains Hantash, who has been leading the project of recruiting and training young players to represent the hosts next year.

Over the last decade, Jordan strengthened its women’s football structures from the very foundation, by encouraging young girls to play in one of the 15 grassroots centres spread across the country, with an average of 400 girls taking part in football activities all year round.

Simultaneously, the Jordanian Football Association spurred the growth of both youth and senior leagues.

The U-17 Women’s World Cup is both the pinnacle of this process for the country and a potential turning point for the same idea to start reaching greater heights in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region - particularly following the International Football Association Board’s amendments to the Laws of the Game in 2014 that allowed the wearing of head covers.

Across the 19 countries in the MENA region, most of them predominantly Muslim, there are currently 13,890 registered female players – a number that has been mounting thanks to the constant investment in development activities.

In 2015, FIFA organised a total of 27 events in the region, including seven Live Your Goals festivals that put 1,250 girls in contact with football, often for the first time in their lives. In November alone, for example, FIFA organised a coaching course in Cairo, Egypt, with 50 per cent female participation; a goalkeeping course conducted by former Frankfurt and Dutch international Marleen Wissink for a group of 30 females in Teheran, Iran, and a Live Your Goals festival for 144 girls in Kerak, Jordan.

In the case of Jordan, embracing the Live Your Goals project is just one of several activities foreseen in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup legacy programme. By improving football infrastructure, organising coaching courses and launching public school tournaments for girls, for example, FIFA and the Jordan Football Association (JFA) are working to ensure that the event leaves a lasting impact on the country’s women’s football development.

“Our aim is to increase the number of girls playing football, while educating the local community about the importance of the women’s game,” explains the Head of Women’s Football at the JFA, Abeer Rantisi, during the festival in Kerak. “We started with the Live Your Goals project in October 2014 and participation has been great.

We hope to see this same level of participation across the whole country. After all, beyond organising the tournament, we hope to increase the popularity of the women’s game in the country.”

There is still a long way to go for women’s football in the region, but the seeds have clearly been sown.

“To have young girls playing sports, and playing football specifically, can do so much to change attitudes and perceptions as to how society perceives girls and young women,” says Her Royal Highness Princess Basma Bint Talal of Jordan, an important voice in favour of women’s rights and gender equity.

“If a Jordanian woman wants to play football, I say ‘go for it’. Because you are a role model for society, for changing traditional roles and challenging the negative perception regarding women. And football is the healthiest and the most inspiring way to do all this.”

A platform for further development in Oceania

Oceania’s first FIFA Women’s Football Regional Development Seminar in 2005 was held in Cook Islands, and now ten years on, the same Polynesian nation is hosting another event that will be crucial to furthering the women’s game throughout the region.

FIFA and OFC have organised this week’s seminar to help with assessing the progress made and creating a vision for the Confederation and Associations to follow.

Cook Islands Football Association (CIFA) CEO Mii Piri described it is an honour for the association to be welcoming colleagues from across the Pacific to discuss the successes and struggles each of them face in engaging women in football.

“Here in Cook Islands we have definitely grown the number of women playing football in the last ten years,” she said. “We offer more programmes than before and there are a greater number of leagues, some of them mixed, that provide women with the opportunity to play.”

Piri said that holding this event during the 2016 OFC U-17 Women’s Championship also helps raise the profile of the seminar and what it is trying to achieve. “Each of the teams participating in this competition have players who have come through the various programmes on offer in each Member Association which shows that we are making a difference.

“For the Cook Islands and the development of the women’s game here we hope that as well as raising the profile we have shown local girls that playing football can lead somewhere, that they can represent their country and travel the world.”

The FIFA Women’s Football Regional Development Seminar brings together the CEOs or General Secretaries, technical directors and women’s football development officers from each of the 11 OFC Member Associations.

Unleashing potential
“The Oceania region has come forth in the past years by putting in place tailor-made programmes for women and girls,” said Mayi Cruz Blanco, FIFA Senior Women’s Football Development Manager.

“In particular we have seen great progress with grassroots projects and the creation of youth leagues.

“Together with OFC, FIFA seeks to explore further opportunities to help associations become more competitive and realise the full potential of women’s football in the region,”

A crucial step in the future is to optimise current development plans and work on priorities at Associations and Confederation level.

Under discussion over the course of the four-day seminar will be the current status, potential and future of women’s football development in Oceania, as well as some of the trends on the international stage. Grassroots, youth and league development will be key topics.

In collaboration with OFC and FIFA, the 2015-2018 Member Association Development Plans will be discussed as will the creation of a shared vision for women’s football in Oceania.

The seminar will also aim to provide Member Associations in the region with different tools that will help them to plan and monitor progress.

Sessions will be led by FIFA Consultant Ebru Koksal and FIFA Women’s Football Instructor Hesterine De Reus.

World cup qualifiers: Flamingoes resume camp Sunday

The national under-17 women’s football team, the Flamingoes, will return to camp on Sunday in preparation for the final qualifying stage for the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition will hold from Sept. 30 to Oct. 21 in Jordan.

Flamingoes’ coach Bala Nikyu told NAN in Abuja on Friday that all the players who were in the team for the second round of the qualifiers were expected in camp.

NAN reports that the Flamingoes had beaten the Baby Gladiators of Namibia 4-0 and 5-0 in the last round and will now face South Africa in the final round.

“We are resuming this Sunday to begin camping in Abuja in preparation for the final round of the World Cup qualifier against South Africa.

“We have a team already. The players who prosecuted the home and away matches against Namibia are automatically invited to the team’s Serob Legacy Hotel camp in Abuja.

“We can only make slight changes if we have exceptional players who can displace any of the old ones,’’ Nikyu said.

The players are goalkeepers Cynthia Nnadozie and Nimot Ajayi, as well as defenders Esther Adeboye, Joy Duru, Patience Dike, Onyinyechi Ibe and Ijeoma Kenneth.

Others are midfielders Ramat Abdulkareem, Peace Efih, Precious Oyagbarh, Christy Ucheibe and Folashade Ijamilusi, while the forwards are Rasheedat Ajibade, Cynthia Aku, Yetunde Fajobi, Rejoice Ikoyo, Kikelomo Olaiya and Chidinma Okeke.

NAN reports that the Nigerian girls who beat Namibia 9-0 aggregate will host their South African counterparts in the weekend of March 11 to March 13 in Abuja.

The return leg will hold between March 25 and March 27, with the winners over two legs automatically going through to the World Cup finals scheduled for four Jordanian cities.

The Flamingoes have never failed to qualify for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup finals since the event debuted in New Zealand in 2008.
