At the end of the day, nobody will import or buy frozen poultry if the local poultry products are just as appealing in value.

660bn for chicken? i smell lies.

As absurd as it may seem, those figures are "TRUE". Lemme break it down for you. A Kilo of chicken costs between N800 - N900 and Nigeria has over 170 million people. Lets assume 20% of that figure consume chicken regularly. Twenty percent means out of every ten nigerians, only 2 consume chicken weekly. That leaves us with 34 million regular chicken consuming Nigerians. Please note am being conservative with my estimates.

Furthermore, lets assume the average Nigerian consumes 2kg of chicken. Meaning, on a weekly basis, the average chicken consuming Nigerian spends N800 x 2 = N1,600. Dont forget these are just minimum estimates. Actual figures should be much more than these.

From the above calculation, if 1 (one) Nigerian spends N1,600 on chicken per week, then
34million Nigerians will spend N1,600 x 34 Million = N54,400,000,000!!!! - N54 Billion

Please note this is the selling price and not cost price.
Lets assume cost price, that is the amount the importers paid for importing the chicken, is 65% of the selling price. This means that importers spend 65% of N54,400,000,000 = N35,360,000,000 i.e N35 Billion per week.

And if we spend N35 Billion per week importing chicken, consequently we spend N35 Billion * 52 weeks = N1,855,000,000,000 i.e N1.8 Trillion annually !!!! Do you believe the numbers now? From our little calculation, it is evident that the Poultry Association of Nigeria estimate of N660 Billion wasn't even close.

Imagine loosing N1.8 Trillion annually to illegal Poultry import! How can your economy survive??

Oduntan explained that while locally farmed poultry meat is sold without preservation, the smuggled ones are preserved with hazardous chemicals, adding that formalin load in all smuggled poultry products ranges from 42.9 to 63.3ml/kg.

If only people would listen and stop poisoning themselves.

It causes cancer and a host of other illnesses.

We spent even more on imported furnitures and textiles, did that stop Buhari from removing ban yesterday?

The truth is competition is good for this country and makes lower prices.

This policy is about maintaining the status quo and enriching Dangote, Buhari did not consider local industry wen he lifted the ban on Furniture and Textile just yesterday but here he is placing ban on the commodities of the common man, so Dangote can fix the price and enrich himself without us having any cheaper alternative.

Nigeria is doomed with this kind of economy management.

yeah ur right,Nigerian needs competition for things to be better, even with poultry farms increasing rampantly in Nigeria, to buy a life chicken is still expensive to the masses, while even the fresh egg that is been technologically produced daily is still,#750 per crate no reductions in price, for long.

Nigeria is doomed with this kind of economy management.

Look if importation is encouraged, local industries die off and so do jobs. Whether or not it enriches dangote, no reasonable economy would kill of its own industries in the name of cheaper goods. For example, you can ask brazil why they have strict regulations against mobile phones that are manufactured outside its shores. Its all to encourage and preserve local industries.

This is a mistake of a country. A country that imports everything. A country that never had good leader.

The way of insane importation is not sustainable. Sometimes I just think the country should just run out of money and be divided.

But anyway sha let hope buhari would not be crazy like other useless "leaders".

no no no nigeria is doomed as entrepreneurs refuse to challenge dangote, being satisfied once they have achieved local champion status unlike dangote who realises that once you stop growing you start to wither and die.tell me what stops poultry association from selling shares and building mega poultries other than they want to be the only "successful nigerians
