Opinion: Do We Really Need A Senate??? by InMyOpinion(m): 2:17pm On Jun 25, 2015 |
Now before the knowlege power houses here descend on me, I must admit that i know about legislative affairs only as much as the ordinary Nigerian on the street. But based on this little knowledge and based on what I see around and hear - its quite challenging for me to see any significant difference between what the Senate does from what the House of Representative does. And considering the curent economic reality and the recent need & push for a reduction in cost of governance, the question that begs answers is Do we really need a senate? In my Opnion - NO! Already the house comprises 3 people from each state of the federation - I dont not see any real additional value that the senate adds to legislative business. I see them as a redundant legislative body and an unncesary cost center. In my opinion, the senate should be scrapped when the tenure of the current assemply expires I wish the Moderator could create a poll for this, I believe a lot of people will cast a "No". A referendum may even be conducted if this is required to expunge this body from our constitution Share your thoughts 2 Likes |

Though it is not mandatory for us to have senate, buh in my own extra sensory perception and articulation about the subject matter here, i think NIGERIA is too vast not to have a senate. All we just need are dedicated set of people who are not going to confiscate public funds to their private bosom or be too egocentric and smug to discharge their duties. We just need a revolutionary transformation of the NATIONAL ASSEMBLY. LONG LIVE NIGERIA!!! 2 Likes 1 Share |

WE DON'T NEED A SENATE!!! This is the third time I am making this suggestion within a week. If I were President Buhari, I will do the following without batting an eyelid: 1. The Senate and Lower House should be dissolved altogether ASAP. 2. Selected delegates from different state houses of assembly should rather be nominated to meet at the senate at intervals. This move might be unconstitutional but it necessary because the Senate and HOR will both be impediments to accelerating Nigeria's growth in this current precarious period. With the current malaise going on, I foresee this happening soon. This is why something must be done soon and fast enough... 2 Likes |

mikolo80: As much as I like democracy, I am beginning to think that our Nigerian version of democracy is an albatross to our development. We need to 'shed' some dead weight and I think we should start by doing away with out redundant Senate and HOR. |

TonySpike:development of a society is not really dependent on practice of democracy eg are Singapore, china ,gulf countries and Malaysia..but are Nigerians ready to a kind of dictatorship? 1 Like |

Re: Opinion: Do We Really Need A Senate??? by TonySpike: 9:52pm On Jun 25, 2015 |
asha80: We need some form of dictatorship in Nigeria, but it must be a benevolent one. I believe dictatorship is necessary to clean the aegean stables and rid Nigeria of cyclical corruption to accelerate development. There must be benevolence in the way justice is being meted out too. Hence, a benevolent dictatorship is necessary! |

TonySpike:dude you either like democracy or you don't.stop being indecisive.Sorry to bust your bubble but there is nothing wrong with nigerian democracy.it is the same type oyinbo took 200yrs to perfect or you think say na better tin dem give us. What you're witnessing is true democracy in all its glacial glory. Its a pity cos I thought between tinubu and buhari they could bulldoze their way through but guess pdp still in the game or at least new pdp cos old pdp is dead and you don't discard a seatbelt or airbags cos they look redundant cos someday they will surely come in handy 1 Like 1 Share |

You know I feel all these crisis will lead to the senate losing its relevance. |
