Maybe because you have to dig real deep before you find water, that's why they prefer Boreholes to Wells, maybe.

Igala has no dynasty from Bini. Igala fought Bini and conquered. As a sign of defeat and humilaition, Igala collected what the present Attah Igala uses on his neck called ' Eju ki a b'eju ailo', which can be translated as 'An eye that sets fear to other eyes'. Ayegba was the Atah Igala then. He also fought and conquered the Jukum, and defeated Queen Amina of Zaria and had her buried at Ida. This gave Igala an absolute independence till the British coquered them between 1880-1901

Igala didn't actually defeated the Benin warriors but it was the toughest battle Igala fought. The first phase of the battle when Igala had upper hand was when the "eju ch'egahi" was taken to Idah. Even though Igala had upper hand in the first phase of the battle, it'll be wrong to say Igala had victory.
After the first battle which Igala went to Benin to fight, Benin also mustered all his army with aids from the Portuguese who gave him sophisticated weapons not available to Igala. With that, the battle became too tough for both sides but due to heavy casualties, Igalas were not willing to fight further. When Benin discovered that Igala wasn't willing to fight further, they increased their attacks, thinking they will conquer Idah, set the city on fire and take everyone as slaves. Igalas knew of this plot and they have to end the war once and for all. With that, Inikpi Odo abola bobolo was sacrificed, she was buried alive with 9 maids. After the sacrifice was accepted, the Benin soldiers retreated by themselves. Nobody knows what they saw but I'm sure that whatever they saw inflicted heavy casualties on them because after the war, no Benin man steps on Igala soil again though Igalas do go there.
It was a no Victor no vanquish situation. If Igalas had won, Benin would have been Igala land today, if Benin won, they won't be Igala land today. It was a war of mutual independence.
Surely, if the Portuguese did help Oba of Benin, ten of Benin wouldn't have been able to stop Igala. But due to foreign weapons involved, and because of the love Attah had for his people, he wasn't willing to allow them to be killed further. Even though the Benin were also losing soldiers in dross.

Had it been Benin succeeded, today you will be hearing stories like Igala Migrated from Benin..and settled there.
