Stop Cutting Trees, Preserve The Environment - Ambode by MuguliciousMUGU: 1:20am On Jul 15, 2015
The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, says residents of the state must desist from indiscriminate felling of trees to preserve the environment.
The governor spoke on Tuesday at an event to mark the 2015 tree planting campaign at the Technical College, Ikotun, with the theme: Tree, The Lungs of The Earth.
He said tree planting was the cheapest and simplest strategy to tackle the challenge of climate change and its effect on human lives.
He added that statistics and projections about the impact of climate change on earth, particularly the gradual depletion of the rainforest, reinforced the need for all hands to be on deck.
Ambode said, “All Lagosians must, therefore, embrace tree planting as a way of life in order to restore the dignity of the earth. We must also desist from indiscriminate felling of trees. For every tree that must be removed, at least five must be planted.”
He commended the efforts of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency in its advocacy efforts that had resulted in the planting of about 5.9 million trees and the creation of over 96,000 jobs for all categories of artisans and professionals.
”Let me reaffirm this administration`s commitment to preservation of the environment, mitigation of global warming and its attendant climate change through the annual tree planting campaign. Tree planting campaign remains the cheapest and simplest option to tackle the challenge, hence our resolve not to relent in this exercise,” the governor added.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of the Environment, Hakeem Ogunbanbi, said the 2015 tree planting exercise was taking place simultaneously in all the 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas across the state.
In a related development, the wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, has urged Lagosians to adopt the habit of planting trees to restore the dignity of the environment.
She spoke at the Yaba area of the state where she planted a tree to commemorate the 2015 tree planting campaign.
She said, “Climate change and its effect on human life is real; so also is the vulnerability of our state. All statistics and projections about the impact of climate change on planet earth, particularly the gradual depletion of the rain forest, reinforce the need for all hands to be on deck. The tree planting exercise remains the cheapest and simplest option to tackle this challenge.”
She enjoined every resident of the state to replace every felled tree in Lagos with more trees.
In his welcome address, Mr. Toyin Onisarotu, who represented the Ministry of the Environment, noted that the campaign began in 2008.
He added that it was an offence to fell trees without permission, walk on lawns, graze animals in the green areas and fail to beautify perimeters of property, among others...

well, what do you expect when firewood is the cheapest fuel the poor Man can easily gain access to... Kerosene sells for more than #140 @ most filling stations and the gas even tho economical is out of the poor Man's reach. Provide a cheap and readily available means of cooking, then tell the poor Man to stop cutting trees and he would listen.
